— What makes Dar Darma so special?
Laura: “I’ve never found another hotel like it. Dar Darma has a special character: it is more of a private property, with a special service.
The furnishing and the atmosphere make the property unique. The ceilings are very high and are painted as they were originally. When you enter, it appears huge. The colors are sometimes so strong that you become captured by the place. At least this was my first impression.”

— How would you describe the style of Dar Darma?
Laura: “I have visited a lot of riads in Marrakech and I can state that our interior designer has been thorough in every detail. You can see the style is entirely Moroccan and all the furnishings have been made by local craftsmen and are so beautiful.
Sometimes the style can be intentionally a little decadent, but all the people who have given comments and suggestions said that they’ve never visited a hotel like that.

— Please tell me a bit about the different rooms at Dar Darma.
Laura: “The hotel has 6 luxury units: 2 big apartments and 4 double suites. The Red apartment and the Blue apartment both have two separated double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a large living room with fireplace. Some ancient doorways connect the different rooms of the apartments.
The Orange suite is on two levels. It has a living room at the first floor, then up a wooden staircase is the double bedroom, the terrace and the bathroom. The Mirror suite has a wall made of mirrors close to the headboard, a large living room with chaises longues and a bathroom. The two Patio suites are the newest. They have a more contemporary design and brighter colors.
All the apartments and the suites at Dar Darma have complementary wifi access, air conditioners, hair dryers and amenities for the bathroom.”

— What other facilities do you offer?
Laura: “All the units at Dar Darma overlook the patio, which is the heart of the riad. It’s one of the common areas as well as the Moroccan lounge, the hall of Arches and the fireplace lounge. These areas are designed as places to relax, listen to music, read. In particular, we have created a special library, our guests are allowed to pick up a book for their leisure hours or leave one that they have read and loved, perhaps with their notes or their dedication.
At the top of the building we have terraces where guests can enjoy beautiful views across the city to the Atlas mountains. We have sun beds and shaded sitting areas, a nine by two meter swimming pool that’s not heated, but Marrakech has great weather year round so guests can use it from March to October.
And we also have a homely hammam, a traditional Moroccan bath consisting of two rooms with different temperatures. Guests often combine the hammam with the beauty treatments.”

— What would you describe to be the spirit of Dar Darma and your philosophy?
Laura: “Our philosophy is to welcome the guests into a relaxing environment and to make them feel at home. They can always ask the staff questions, have breakfast or any other meal at any time and anywhere. We are able to serve the meals in the suites or on the terraces, anywhere we can set up a table and make it special.”

— Please tell me a bit about Marrakech, its culture and people.
Laura: “It’s absolutely vibrant. Before arriving, my opinion was that Marrakech was an ancient place with people not so friendly and open-minded. On the contrary, when I arrived I found a very active crowd and most people were smiling.
When I visited the main square in Marrakech (Jemaa el Fna) I thought I was watching a photograph, that it couldn’t be real life. There were monkeys in the square, free to walk around and jump into the arms of the tourists. There were snakes, story-tellers and women drawing on your hand with henna . It was explained to me that there was a tradition that all the single ladies used to paint their hand in order to find a husband. I was single at the time and I had both hands painted, but nothing happened.”

— What would you recommend not to miss in the area?
Laura: “We usually recommend a Moroccan design tour which visits local artisans and showrooms as well as horseback riding through traditional villages and hot ballooning over the city . Shopping is also a big part of the guests’ visits. At Dar Darma we have a personal shopper who can guide guests in their shopping, helping them to deal with the Moroccan people in haggling a price.”

— What have some of the guests said about the hotel?
Laura: “I often receive emails from our guests. Once returned at home, they would like to thank us for the hospitality and send through their compliment for the way Dar Darma has been conceived and designed.”

— When is the best time to come for a visit to Dar Darma?
Laura: “Mainly from February until June and from September till November. But the weather is lovely all year long — even in December, terraces are enjoyable during daytime.
Events such as the Popular Art Fest (July), the Caftans event (May) or the Moon Fest (Sept) and so forth are a good reason to be in Marrakech and meet interesting people.”

Dar Darma
Deep in the maze of the Marrakech Medina, Dar Darma is made up of three cavernous rooms and two additional apartments (each with two bedrooms), all of which have been meticulously restored to their original 17th-century grandeur. A striking, ‘Arabian Nights meets La Dolce Vita’ décor has been added to the mix, making the place look as though it has been plucked straight from the pages of ELLE Decoration (think 300-year-old zouak ceilings paired with leopard skin rugs, antique velvet sofas, carved wooden beds and rust-effect or metallic strip walls).
Each room is unique. The first-floor Red Apartment is the largest (and the owner’s pick when he’s in town) and comes with a secret doorway in the middle of the cupboard leading to a bathroom with deep twin bathtubs. The Blue Apartment is only marginally less palatial.
