— You used to holiday in Daylesford for some years before you decided to build this beautiful home. What was your inspiration to build a holiday home and rent it out?

Jane: “We wanted to create a place that we would want to stay in. We wanted to build a brand that reflected us and that stood out in the market where most places appear a little formulaic and bland. We wanted to create a new niche in the holiday market where the level of design and personal detailing is not currently seen.”

— Daylesford House was designed and developed by your husband who is an artist and designer. How would you describe the style of the interior?

Jane: “Relaxed, comfortable, easy and stylish. We wanted it to feel uncontrived yet we want to create an atmosphere. Our style is eclectic - a mix of old and new, it must be functional and it must look good. No other rules really.”

— What would you describe to be the spirit of Daylesford House and your philosophy?

Jane: “It needs to feel like your home, your space. Relax and enjoy the environment. Elements such as the dark lounge, the fireplace and the daybed help us achieve this.”

— Please tell me a bit about the facilities and the different rooms at Daylesford House.

Jane: “Daylesford House consists of two buildings. The main building is a white weatherboard, attic style home with 4 bedrooms within the steep roof space. The ground floor is carved up into a bright eat-in kitchen, dining room and an intimate dark and moody lounge with an open fire. The second building is a black weatherboard stables building with a self-contained suite.”

— What is it that makes Daylesford House so special to you personally?

Jane: “Daylesford House reflects our style. It is a personification of what aesthetics we like and lifestyle we want to achieve. It is our taste.”

— How would you like your guests to remember their stay?

Jane: “That they relaxed and soaked up the atmosphere. Hopefully they experienced the place and really loved our house. And that they comment that they have never stayed anywhere like this before!

— Please tell me a bit about the region around the house? What is Daylesford like?

Jane: “Daylesford is in the Macedon Ranges an hour and half from Melbourne. It is a small country town in the hills renowned for its local produce, day spa and mineral springs. It is picturesque and very green and has a beautiful changing of the seasons colour display.”

— What would you recommend not to miss in the area?

Jane: “The food. The area is known for its award winning restaurants and farmers’ market. The lake, the surrounding towns like Kyneton and Castlemaine for interesting shopping and dining. The botanical gardens on the top of town is spectacular and so close to the house.”

— When is the best time to come for a visit to Daylesford House?

Jane: “Summer is great for enjoying the outdoors, walks, dining outside and swimming in the lake. Autumn is beautiful as the colours change and the mild temperatures are perfect. Winter is about open fires, red wine and enjoying the brisk mountain air. The mineral baths and spas are a great way to stay warm. Spring is just pretty with all of the natural scenery coming back to life and the local produce, markets and restaurants in full bloom. So anytime really!”

— To you personally, what has been most rewarding about renting out Daylesford House?

Jane: “The feedback. Having people say they felt at home. That they loved our interiors and had a perfect time there.”

— You already have plans for the future with a new house in Byron Bay. What will the new house be like and do you have any other plans for the future?

Jane: “Byron Bay will be a response to that environment just as Daylesford House has been. We are planning a Moroccan style ‘permanent tent’ with daybeds, outdoor rooms and a relaxed Australian beach style. It will be about comfort, style and livable luxury. Lots of accommodation with 4 bedrooms and the ability to sleep at least 12. As we have in Daylesford, we want to cater for families and groups as we see this as a strong trend in holidaying.”

Daylesford

Jane Martino wanted to share a home with our readers that her husband (designer and artist Matt) crafted in Daylesford, Australia, and is available as a vacation rental. It’s about an hour and a quarter from Melbourne, has the most spectacular views and the landscape is heavenly. This 4 bedroom home is set in the country but the interior has modern touches which make this space a perfect blend of old and new. Additional accommodation is available via the “Stables” which houses a four poster bed and freestanding bath; ideal as a luxury wedding suite or intimate couples retreat. (I’m getting married next month - I’ll take it!!!)

Daylesford Home

This stunning Daylesford property has been designed and styled with such warmth, care and attention to detail, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re looking at the perfect family home. But this is no ordinary family home, this (...) a truly exquisite four-bedroom rental property in the heart of Daylesford, and the personal project of Melbourne-based Jane and Matt Martino.

(...) After years of holidaying in Daylesford, Melbourne-based Jane and Matt decided to buy land in the area just over three years ago. With their combined skills (Matt is an artist and freelance designer, whilst Jane is Executive Director of communications agency Undertow Media), the pair took on the challenge of designing, building and marketing Comma as a boutique holiday spot. Fast forward to 2010, and they’re the proud owners of this beautiful property – designed by Matt and built from the ground up! ALL THIS with three boys, ages 2,3 and 4….!!
