Town of Civita
— Patrizio: “The town of Civita di Bagnoregio is simply a magical place. You step back in time when you enter the arched gate of the city after hiking up the pedestrian bridge.”
Interview By:
— In a nutshell, how would you describe Domus Civita?
Patrizio: “A unique 14th century medieval home inside the magical town of Civita di Bagnoregio. The home is situated in a place of great natural beauty where you breath the untouched history of the town and the complexity of the surrounding landscape, blended together in a unique way. I took the ‘soul’ of the house and re-expressed it by contrasting it with modern interventions and furnishings... with a touch of romanticism and humour.”

— Town of Civita
— Please tell us a bit about the history of the house.
Patrizio: “The structure dates from the 14th century and is situated on top of Etruscan caves and tombs and a beautiful Roman water cistern, all of which are accessible from inside the house and open onto a beautiful hanging garden 4 stories down and through the cliff. The Etruscan caves are 2600 years old while the roman cistern is probably 2000 years old.

The restoration of the house became a challenging exercise of making the different parts feel as a whole yet retaining their spirit.”

— What was your inspiration to restore another house in Italy and rent it to guests?
Patrizio: “I’m addicted to it... plain and simple! Podere Palazzo has been so successful and rents so well that we felt we were doing something right! I love beauty in all its forms, natural and man-made and I want to be part of the process of creating beauty through restoring tired old structures with lots of charm and potential.”

— Please tell us a bit about the architecture and style of the interior.
Patrizio: “I wanted to keep all that was original and beautiful in the house without touching it but just cleaning it and restoring it. Since the house was badly divided and chopped up at some point we needed to create a new stairwell to connect all 3 floors. The rest is all white and ethereal with accents of brass, gold and greys and a few shots of bright colours. I thought of it as a simple and serene place full of little surprises and romantic touches.”

— Living area
— Please tell us a bit about the facilities and rooms of the house.
Patrizio: “The house has three bedrooms all with private baths and a study with extra beds. The house is set up for 8 guests. We have 2 kitchens, 1 inside the house and one in a cave opening onto the garden. There is a heated pool with Jacuzzi inside one the largest caves and then a unique wine cellar for our guests inside the roman water cistern. All the other caves (9 in total) are devoted to art installations and storage.

The house comes with a formal italian garden with an old fountain, an outdoor living room and a gazebo with barbecue for outdoor dining for 8.”

— What would you describe to be the essence of Domus Civita?
Patrizio: “The town of Civita di Bagnoregio is simply a magical place. You step back in time when you enter the arched gate of the city after hiking up the pedestrian bridge. The atmosphere is hard to describe and it’s of a rare beauty. The house is a reflection of this reality and atmosphere and in addition it provides an endless array of sceneries and layers that make you feel part of a complex architectural system in balance between the ground and the sky.”
