— What was your motivation to open Elqui Domos?

Esteban: “Well, it really was a tricky thing. I am an engineer actually, and for one thing or another I got to be the regional director of the National Tourism Board in the Coquimbo region. Back then, everyone was talking about astronomic tourism but nobody did anything. After some time I decided to quit my job and build my own company. I was very clear that it had to be an astronomic theme hotel. And when I found the domes, I thought this is it. We started in January 2005 on a piece of land that belonged to the mother of a very close friend of mine. At that moment they were doing nothing with it, so I asked to lease the piece of land. I was renting it for about 3 years and then we bought it.”

— Why an astronomic hotel?

Esteban: “The Coquimbo region has very special conditions. We have one of the clearest skies in the world here. There are, for example, four scientific observatories and there are six touristic observatories. And none of these had any lodging specialized in the astronomic theme. So it was sort of a logical step to go.”

— What is the essence of Elqui Domos?

Esteban: “The essence is a very simple thing. Just lay down and look at the stars from your bed. I mean, you cannot miss that, if you go to Elqui Domos, and that is a very unique thing. Enjoy the skies in a very comfortable place.”

— Please tell us about the domes.

Esteban: “Each dome is 36 square metres. On the first floor, you can find a small living room and the bathroom, which is 6 square metres. The bedroom is on the second floor. Also, every dome has a big terrace around, so you can stay there or look at the stars just lying in your bed. The bathroom is a fully furnished bathroom. You have hot water, shower, WC and everything. I mean everything works just like in a house. There is also a swimming pool area with a deck from where you can overlook the whole valley. And finally, we have a restaurant and a lounge at Elqui Domos, which we are redesigning at the moment.”

— Please tell us about the area around Elqui Domos.

Esteban: “The area is pretty much off the beaten track in terms of foreign tourism. But anyway, it is a very interesting place. It is maybe how San Pedro de Atacama was 20 years ago. It is a very mystic and quiet place to visit. We are just on the border of the central valley with a lot of vineyards and the beginning of the Atacama Desert, so it is a very funny landscape.”

— What do you consider to be a must do experience?

Esteban: “I would say the astronomic tour. I mean enjoying the stars and trying to understand them from whichever approach you want, the scientific, the astrological or the archaeoastronomic way, which means how the people used to look at the stars in the very beginning. It is a very funny and interesting way to look at it. I mean, to really understand the skies, I would say that is a must and you can't miss it. And you cannot look at it in a better place in the world.”

— What tours do you offer?

Esteban: “The most important one is obviously the astronomic tour. We have many different telescopes, small ones and bigger ones. On the tour, our guide explains everything about the skies, the constellations, how the stars got there and all of that. And you can use your own telescope for that. So it is a very personalized way of enjoying the skies. The other things that we have are spa services like reiki, massage and yoga. And there are also some outdoor activities like cycling and daytime or nighttime horse rides. There is even a hot spring you can go and visit.”

— When is the best time to go?

Esteban: “The season I like the most here at Elqui Domos is the beginning of our autumn, which is March, April. It is a very nice time, nice weather, not so hot, not many people are around, so there is lots of space to enjoy. But also when the summer is about to begin. It is hot enough to go into the swimming pool and there are not that many people around.”
