— Christina: “I’m very proud of it. It’s our house, but it’s quite special because it’s one of the few houses in the town which has retained the really traditional style.”

— How did you end up with a holiday home in Spain? What was your motivation?
Christina: “About 10 years ago we decided to buy a house in Spain — mainly because having three children we could not afford hotels any longer as we needed 2 hotel rooms to accomodate us all. Also, my husband loved everything about Spain, the culture, the beaches, the people, and so it was a natural place for us to buy.

Andalucía at the time was also still relatively affordable compared to the rest of Europe. We always intended to rent to friends to help with the upkeep of the house, but as it was never luxuriously finished like a hotel. We kept it more as a family home that we continued to rent on friends’ recommendations basis and put any money we made back into restoring the house. So, over the 10 years we have improved it little by little trying to make it comfortable, but retaining the old style.”

— What is the history of the house?
Christina: “The house is one of the most traditional Moorish houses in town. Parts of it are actually up to a thousand years old, so it’s a very, very historic house. It’s not a grand house although there are lots of small rooms; and it’s not a villa on its own, but it is very much part of the town. Number six the Castle is quite warren-like, with big thick white walls and arches. It is painted all white with a splash of the Andalucían yellow in the garden. It’s very traditional in that it’s arranged around a courtyard and then there is the garden beyond with vines, lemons and bougainvillea. What I think makes the house special is that the minute you enter, it’s like you’ve entered another world and era.”

— How would you describe Number six the Castle?
Christina: “The house is very charismatic, it’s very unusual. It is not modern, although it has good facilities. It has got two bathrooms and a good practical kitchen that we restored. Its all been rewired and plumbed, but it feels very, very traditional. For example the cobblestone floor as you enter is hundreds of years old. It’s where the horses used to enter. And when we restored the bathroom, we found old stone balls that turned out to be cannon balls.

I’m very proud of it. It’s our house but it’s quite special, because it still keeps its architectural integrity and charm and blends in well with the Andalucían way of life.

One of the other things about the house is that it’s very cool inside, because the walls are so thick and it’s all painted white to reflect the heat. You can't have air conditioning because it wouldn’t be allowed as it’s an ancient historic property, but you don’t need it anyway.”

— How is life there?
Christina: “You know, this town was built by the moors in the tenth century. And occasionally, it still feels like that. It has all the little white washed alleys. It’s the kind of Spain as it was 20 or 30 years ago, not how you perceive modern tourist spain. However, there are good restaurants to eat in and lovely artisan shops. We are at the very heart of the Andalucian community - very slow, rather laid back. The Spanish are very sociable people, so at night the town comes alive. Lots of people go to the square and hang out, and the children play in the streets.”
