— Scot: “We’re taking it to the next level, to what people want today. We’re more casual. We’re not so wound up with ‘Sirs’ and ‘Madams.’ It’s more about ‘Mr. Jones’ or ‘Jim, how are you?’”

— What is special about Thailand compared to the other places that you’ve been to?
Scot: “Well, I think the people, the culture and the food. Thai food is just fantastic — fresh, spicy and interesting. In Phuket it’s focused on seafood, rather than on vegetables, fruits and meat like in the north of the country.

Compared to places like the Maldives — which is an amazing location, but a very small island with basically just your idyllic white sand beaches and palm trees — Thailand has a lot to offer. It ranges from culture and nature to the people and the food, so it’s a great, interesting country. It’s very multicultural and diverse and everyone lives very well together. It doesn’t matter what culture or religion you are which I found quite similar, actually, to Sri Lanka. I think it comes from their base culture being Buddhist where they’re into meditation, welcoming all people and not killing animals and this sort of thing. It makes for a very nice country.”

— You’re the General Manager of the resort next door. Villa Amanzi is also part of the resort or is it just managed by it?
Scot: “It’s a private villa. We manage the villa and add value to it as a vacation rental by having the staff trained, managed and supervised by a luxury hotel and giving our guests access to the resort. They can use all our facilities including the spa and have the whole hotel concierge service at their disposal.

Our luxury resort is located on an area called Millionaire’s Mile. It’s a bay that just has about a dozen or so private, huge, luxury villas on. We’re very lucky to have a piece of land in this location and are the only resort here in this beautiful, secluded spot.”

— What other kinds of services do you offer?
Scot: “We pick up the guests up from the airport in our luxury SUVs and take them straight to their villa, have a professional check-in process and show them around the villa and settle them in.

Then all our services are just a phone call away. We also offer a catering service and a villa attendant who can buy groceries or arrange a special barbecue, cocktails or canapés. So our guests have all these high end benefits but still have their private vacation home where they’re hidden away and can be by themselves.”

— So Villa Amanzi was originally built as a private vacation home?
Scot: “Yes, correct. Villa Amanzi was built in 2009. The owners are from Hong Kong — a lady from New Zealand and her South African husband. They have two children and come down to their vacation home for holidays and weekends.”

— As a resort, how would you describe your company’s philosophy?
Scot: “We aim to deliver a heavenly experience to guests. We offer a personalized, unique service where guests have one angel dedicated to them looking after them and planning their holiday, what they should and shouldn’t do. It’s like a guide rather than a hotel with lots of brochures.

In our top room categories we have ‘dream makers’ — and that’s what they do, they create a guest’s dream holiday. They organize things for them and talk about their wants and needs. It’s a completely different style from your typical Ritz Carlton with a butler service experience. We’re taking it to the next level, to what people want today. It’s a bit more fast-paced and a bit more about having experiences than being waited on hand and foot. We’re more casual. We’re not so wound up with ‘Sirs’ and ‘Madams.’ It’s more about ‘Mr. Jones’ or ‘Jim, how are you?’ It’s a more relaxed, but respectful service.”
