An introduction to Casa Horizonte

What was your inspiration to create Casa Horizonte? What is the story behind it?

We are three owners, all French, who landed in Mexico City in our 20s to study. As we were so young, the country shaped who we are today. We loved it so much we stayed to work for a period. Our dream was to have a holiday house in Mexico for our families one day.

Even though we no longer live there, we are all still very connected to Mexico through our work. I do home decor and work with Mexican artisans, while another of my partners collaborates with Mexican coffee, mezcal and tequila producers. He represents small Mexican brands in Europe.

In our early 40s, we decided it was the right moment to build our dream home. Mexico was becoming trendy and many people from the U.S. were looking for land. We wanted a place to honour and protect the land, so we started looking too.

It took around six months to find the right place, just outside a village we loved the most — Mazunte. Casa Horizonte first opened to guests on January 1, 2025

How would you describe the architecture and interior design? What is the atmosphere like staying there?

Casa Horizonte is located in a protected area, so we needed to respect the guidelines of the village. Although these are great limitations!

We all wanted a simple design that worked within the landscape, incorporating the natural surroundings. The property is located on the top of a hill, overlooking the Pacific Ocean — it’s an amazing view! But from the beach looking up, you see almost nothing.

The inspiration for the design started with simple lines and square blocks. We wanted a design that was open to nature and allowed for natural airflow, all while considering the ocean views. There are natural elements everywhere, including the use of lots of wood. I guess you could say nature was our inspiration.

We interviewed eight architects, but narrowed our choice down to two architects who had already built properties in the village. It was important to us that the architect was Mexican. We also consulted with the mayor for his advice, as we wanted a team that got along with the villagers and employed locals.

The architect we chose is based in Mexico City, but the owner of the firm is our neighbour in Mazunte.

In terms of atmosphere, it’s like time stops. If you leave home feeling stressed, you arrive at the house and it just feels good. I think it’s the power of nature. You feel the elements, the breeze. You hear the leaves in the trees and see the hummingbirds. It feels as though you are part of something else.

While designing the interiors, we worked with artisans from the coast, so everything is tailor-made. For example, the table is constructed from local wood and designed specifically for the house by a woodworker in the village. All of the shelves are tailor-made for the house.

It creates a sense of calmness. All of the objects are carefully sourced and it just feels right.

To you personally, what makes Casa Horizonte so special?”

The view of the surroundings, the calm, the connection to nature.

For centuries, this area has been a sacred place. Indigenous peoples came here to do ceremonies. Since I came to Mexico more than 20 years ago, I have always been attracted to the area — it is a very magnetic place.

Whenever I go there and need to think about something, I know I’m going to figure it out. It just feels good.

Do you have a policy regarding children?

I visit with my children, who are aged 3 and 6, and they follow me around everywhere with no problems.

But we recommend a minimum of 6 years, largely because of the pool. Even though the bedrooms are connected in the first block, there is no direct access. You have to go outside and back in. Some people may not like that for their kids.

If people are booking with children, I always chat with them beforehand to ensure they’re aware of the situation.

Casa Horizonte rooms & rates

Casa Horizonte is comprised of three structures. In the middle is the palapa — it’s the traditional gathering place in Mexico. It’s made by friends, for friends.

It has an open kitchen with a dining room and a table for 12 people, as well as a huge couch. The palapa connects to a long and narrow pool (around 10x2 metres).

If you’re facing the ocean, there’s another structure to your right with two bedrooms, plus a rooftop. The bedroom on the ground floor has two queen-size beds and an outdoor bathroom made from bamboo. It’s filled with tropical and aromatic plants and has that “wow” factor.

On the upper floor is the main bedroom of the house, which boasts a fantastic view of the Pacific Ocean. It has a huge door that can be completely opened or partially closed, so you can sleep with the sound of the waves below. This bedroom has a king-size bed.

On the other side of the palapa is a big bedroom that opens onto a lush garden. It has a king-size bed. Connected to it (and just below the kitchen area) is the final bedroom, which is shadier and good for those who don’t want the sound of the waves while they sleep.

The house is designed so you can have two families with their own sleeping areas. Meanwhile, the communal palapa serves as a gathering space.

OVERVIEW

The house consists of 3 separate areas (2 Casas and the Palapa) and offers a total of four bedrooms distributed on each side of the Palapa for up to 12 guests. The traditional Mexican palapa between the two casas comes with a fully equipped kitchen, a dining table for up to twelve people, a lounge area and an infinity pool.

Things to do in Oaxaca & Mazunte

  • Wildlife / Animals
  • Hiking
  • Horseback riding
  • Scuba diving
  • Boat trips

I would recommend taking a boat tour to see the crocodiles and visiting the sea turtle nesting beach. You can also go on a tour with a fisherman at sunrise or sunset to see dolphins – it’s an amazing experience! Depending on the season, you can sometimes see whales on these trips. We also see them from the house.

Puerto Escondido is an hour away and popular with surfers. An hour in the other direction is Huatulco, with lots of hidden coves that can be explored by boat. You can also go into the mountains behind Mermejita to visit families involved in coffee production.

The city of Oaxaca is renowned for its craftsmanship and natural dyes. This is three hours away. It’s great for shopping — everything made in Mexico, you can find there.

OVERVIEW

  • Boat tours on the Pacific Ocean From December to March, you can join a boat tour to see humpback whales and sea turtles in their natural habitat. It's a breathtaking experience you won’t forget.

  • Lagoon boat tours Explore the nearby lagoon by boat and observe crocodiles, exotic birds, and lush mangroves. It’s a great way to connect with the region’s rich biodiversity.

  • Horseback riding on the beach Take a relaxing sunset ride along the shore for a magical and memorable experience.

  • Swimming and surfing Enjoy the warm ocean for swimming, or try your hand at surfing. Mazunte and nearby beaches like San Agustinillo are perfect for beginners and experienced surfers alike.

The location of Casa Horizonte

Casa Horizonte is located in Mazunte — it’s protected as one of Mexico’s “Magic Villages”. This means it has followed the government guidelines of respecting nature and education. For many years, Mazunte has been protecting turtle reproduction in Mexico.

The village centre is around an eight-minute drive from the house. It’s not actually that far, but you need to drive slowly. In an extra minute, you are at a swimming beach. The Pacific Ocean can be quite rough, so it’s not always possible to swim at the beaches.

But we are lucky that the beach close to the house is good for swimming. It’s Mermejita and is a protected area for sea turtles. Depending on the season, you can help release the new hatchlings into the ocean.

Just to the right is Ventanilla, a lagoon and river that is protected for its resident crocodiles. It’s approximately a 10-minute drive from the house and is best explored on guided boat trips.

There are many restaurants in the village and another on the hill, around 10 minutes’ walk from the house. I wouldn’t recommend walking it at night, as there is no light. By car, it’s a four-minute drive.

It’s worth mentioning that the road leading to the house is dirt. We work on it continually, particularly after the rainy season. However, we recommend guests have an SUV. The payoff is the sense of isolation and the amazing views overlooking the ocean.

Around a 15-minute drive from the house is San Agustin, another village I love. It has more restaurants, swimming beaches and amazing sunsets.

When is the best time to visit Oaxaca?

The best time to visit Mazunte is from October to June. Otherwise, it’s the rainy season. I like the rainy season because it’s so green and I don’t mind showers in the evening.

But for some people, they find it annoying, particularly if they are looking for sunshine. In the wet season, it’s not as good for boat rides and wildlife viewing.

Between October and December, sea turtles come to lay their eggs on the beach. It’s an incredible experience to witness and one of Mazunte’s most magical natural events.

For me, January to April is perfect. It’s not too hot, it’s mango season and you can see lots of wildlife. That’s when the region really shines.
