La Finca
The working farm is set amidst orchards of tropical and avocado trees in a little valley a short drive from Spain´s Southern coast.
We wanted a traditional house with a real Spanish atmosphere and a location that would allow us to choose if we wanted to stay at home, go to the village, or go to the coast.
How would you describe El Cortijo in a nutshell?
We bought our 2200 square metre property in Andalucia, Spain, three years ago and fully renovated it. It’s an old farm house that I converted into a luxury vacation villa rental and decorated to look very simple and calm using natural materials and natural colors. It’s surrounded by all sorts of trees — olive, fig, oleanders, oak and more — so you can’t see the neighbours and feel as if you’re immersed in nature. There are neighbours close enough though and the village is nearby, so you’re not isolated.
The atmosphere at the villa has a calming effect. It’s really laid back. We’ve arranged for everything to be very comfortable. The beds have quality mattresses and linens, the big farmer’s kitchen has a dishwasher, oven, and all the amenities, including a juicer and a toaster. The stunning views really add to this relaxed feeling.
The vacation villa has three double bedrooms, two with big beds and one with two single beds, which is usually where the kids stay. The two bedrooms with large beds are big enough to put in baby beds as well, so the house can accommodate up to six people and a baby. The bedroom downstairs is en suite, so the bathroom is in the room itself. There are two bathrooms, a big kitchen, a small living room, a private pool, and a terrace that wraps around the house, allowing plenty of room to sit outside. The porch has a couple of corner couches on which one can take a siesta.
We have air conditioning upstairs and fans in the rest of the rooms in addition to walls that are thick and well-insulated. They were built to prevent heat from getting into the house.
We customise our recommendations depending on what each guest prefers to do. The same goes for food; we recommend specific restaurants that cater to each guest’s preferences.
No Wifi but perfect 4G connection.
The villa is located among rolling hills. There are many beautiful places to hike or bike in. There are rivers and lakes nearby, and the closest beach is about 35 mins away. There’s even a place where you can paraglide.
I enjoy going down to the local bar in the evenings. You can eat very well for not much. There’s usually some music on the main square as well.
And, of course, there are so many small villages and cities close by in various parts of Andalucia that you can take easy day trips to visit them. Antequera is a historical city that’s probably 20 mins from the house. It’s really worth visiting.
The surrondings are beautiful, offering plenty of opportunities for hiking. The villa is about three and a half kilometers from the village Villanueva de Trabuco, which is 35 mins from the coast in the Province of Malaga. The highway is about a 15 minute drive away. Granada is about 40 mins, Cordoba is a bit more than an hour and Sevilla is 1,5 hours away. So guests can stay at El Cortijo or choose a city trip or day at the beach.
We wanted to have a traditional house with a real Spanish atmosphere, and a location that would allow us to choose whether we wanted to stay at home, go on a day trip or to the coast.
I enjoy every season, but we’re closed for customers during the winter period. Winters can be chilly in Andalucia, especially in the evening.
Other than that, spring is a gorgeous time with all the flowers in bloom. In the summer we organise big meals and hang around the pool a lot. The natural light around here is very special. In the evenings, the sky is clear of clouds and full of stars; you can find yourself staring up in delight.
