An introduction to Ferranesi

How would you describe Ferranesi in a nutshell?

Ferranesi is a luxury villa rental near Siena in Tuscany, with 360° spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Its exquisite interior design with minimalist architecture perfectly matches the simplicity of the old Tuscan farm. The sight of the Sienese clay hills is truly astonishing in any of the four seasons and creates a soothing calmness.

Please tell us about the interior design/architecture. How would you describe it?

Ferranesi is a farm property that was reconstructed in the original rural Tuscan style that is traditional for the ‘Crete Senesi’ area. Luxurious interiors and minimalist architecture perfectly match the simplicity of the farm. The famous Belgian architect Christine Conix from conix architects was in charge of the restoration. Starting in 2017, we took on the management of Ferranesi and are now doing yearly updates to the villa. This is our way to surprise our return guests with something new every year. The atmosphere at the house can range from a funky happening for a group of friends to a very relaxed family gathering or a serious business meeting.

What’s your background and what was your inspiration to buy Ferranesi?

When we moved to Italy from Belgium in 2000 we were searching for more quality in our lives. When we discovered Tuscany we decided to create an agriturismo startup close to Montepulciano. Continuing our dream we then started another company in 2006 and now rent out exclusive properties in Val d’Orcia, incorporating top service and delicious local foods. Our goal for our rental properties is very simple: to offer a home away from home.

Is Ferranesi best suited for couples, families, or groups? What’s your policy on kids?

It is absolutely a great property for families or groups of friends. Of course, we can always add extra beds or baby cots. Right next to the garden and the pool are great playgrounds for kids as well as amazing places for adults to relax. Ferranesi has plenty of spots inside and outside where larger groups can gather. It is also a great wedding destination.

In the immediate surroundings of Ferranesi are several famous cultural and historical places of interest. Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano are all within a 30-minute drive. A 45-minute drive through the scenic Crete Sienese landscape brings you to Siena. Twice a year the city’s ‘Piazza del Campo’, is the venue of the colourful ‘Palio’, a very characteristic bareback horse race held since the mid-1600s. Florence, a 1,5-hour drive, is justifiably called ‘the capital of arts’ and considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its overflow of palaces, churches and museums filled with masterful paintings and sculptures.

The location of Ferranesi

The villa rental is situated in Asciano, amid the Sienese clay hills. Podere Ferranesi is located in the heart of the ‘Crete Senesi’ area, a beautiful clay hills landscape, which is an ideal starting point to discover the southern part of Tuscany, including the famous Val d’Orcia district. The villa itself is right outside Asciano, close to the beautiful abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore and the charming hilltop village of Chiusure, from which you can admire a breathtaking view of the whole territory. Another nearby village is San Giovanni d’Asso with its ‘Museo del Tartufo’ and the mysterious ‘Bosco della Ragnaia’ sculpture garden by Shepard Craig.

When is the best time to visit Tuscany?

Tuscany is an incredible place, with stunning views, a great variety of arts and culture, and delicious food and wine. All seasons offer a different view, every angle from the property a different perspective and the silence here is truly enchanting. Our favourite seasons to experience are spring and autumn, but even during winter this is a great place to be. Podere Ferranesi is open all year round, however, from January to March the villa is only available on demand and any extra heating costs are charged separately.

During spring months, nature all around is popping up and the weather is incredible. In autumn there are lots of local festivities in the small villages around, the temperatures are ideal to be active, and the sunsets are more than spectacular during that time of the year. During winter everything calms down. The temperature is ideal for taking day trips to the major cities and there is a fantastic Christmas atmosphere in the villages around.
