An introduction to Finca Sonrisa

How would you describe Finca Sonrisa in a nutshell?

Situated in a rural part of Mallorca, Finca Sonrisa appears from the outside like a traditional finca but features lots of modern elements inside. It offers panoramic views of the Tramuntana mountains and is very tranquil.

What was the inspiration and story behind Finca Sonrisa?

I first saw it a couple of years ago when I was doing a cycling tour and was really impressed by its style. Around the same time, I had asked a friend living in Mallorca to keep an eye out for a property that would make sense for me and, a couple of months later, he called to tell me that there was a finca for sale. When he sent me the photos, I immediately recognised it as the finca I’d seen and felt that it wasn’t just a coincidence, but destiny.

So I made an appointment to view it and immediately fell in love — it’s such a magical place. The tranquility and the amazing views — it’s somewhere you immediately feel at home. There was something very unique about the property and I could see the potential. It just needed a little improvement.

How would you describe the architecture and atmosphere of Finca Sonrisa?

Finca Sonrisa is wide and open, with a big terrace and a salon featuring high walls. The modern design allows the exceptional art pieces we have selected to find their own space and room to breathe. The micro-cement floor means that nothing is distracting you from the works of art, which have been put together in a way that gives them a sense of belonging. In terms of atmosphere, it’s a relaxed place where you can open your mind.

Not only are there great works of art decorating the house but all of the equipment is high-end — we have a Burmester hi-fi system and refrigerators from Sub-Zero. Rather than being exaggerated, it’s luxurious but also very pleasant and comfortable. When you step inside, you immediately feel that we want our guests to have a great time.

To you personally, what is so special about Finca Sonrisa?

It’s the setting, the view and the architecture. Finca Sonrisa is a unique place where you can find calm and forget about daily life. On the other hand, it’s also a place where you can easily work without disruptions. I feel like it serves all of the senses. Your eyes are drawn to the building and the landscape. There’s the feel of the materials used in its design. You hear hardly any noise... and you’ll always eat and drink well in Mallorca!

Is Finca Sonrisa best suited for couples, families, groups? What’s your policy on pets?

We welcome children and dogs that behave! We just ask that pets aren’t on the couches or in the beds. One of the benefits of the property is that dogs can run freely without disturbing the neighbours.

Finca Sonrisa rooms & rates

When you arrive at the property, you drive through a grand gate and a wonderful garden that leads towards the finca. In addition to the main building where there are four bedrooms (three with ensuites), there’s also a small casita apartment and a dreamy terrace with several lounge areas and an infinity pool extending along its length. From here there are wonderful views of the Tramuntana mountains.

After we purchased the finca, we completely gutted the living/dining area and painted the walls and ceiling a light colour. We structured it a little by positioning the central bar furnishings between the main pillars, creating a gigantic spatial effect. This area then merges with the 10-metre-long kitchen featuring Sky-Frame glazing, which transitions from an indoor to an outdoor kitchen.

Mallorca is great for cycling, hiking or renting a yacht to explore the coast. Finca Sonrisa is around 20 minutes’ drive from the closest beach, my favourite of which is Es Trenc. Palma is also a very nice city to explore and easily accessible from the finca, and the island is filled with wonderful restaurants to dine at.

The location of Finca Sonrisa

Finca Sonrisa is around 20 minutes’ drive east of Palma and 17 minutes from the airport, depending on how fast you drive! It’s located on the slopes of Mount Randa, which is famed for its monastery but also home to a small village that’s just two kilometres from the property. There’s one restaurant here and if you go a little further to Llucmajor you’ll find lots of restaurants and grocery stores. The finca itself doesn’t have any immediate neighbours, so it’s very peaceful.

When is the best time to visit Mallorca?

Mallorca can be visited throughout the year but I particularly like it from September/October until the end of January. The temperature is mild and sunny, with little rain and there are not so many people. Christmas in Palma is also really nice and something you should experience at least once.

I’d only recommend visiting in February and March if you were spontaneous with your plans as the weather can be unpredictable. April, May and June are all good times to visit before the peak summer period. Personally, I don’t really like it in July and August as it’s very hot and both the beaches and cities get crowded. You also have to make reservations for dinner. But I understand that for many people, this is their only time to get away. On the plus side, the finca experiences nice breezes and is not quite as hot as other parts of the island, making it a little more agreeable at the height of summer.
