An introduction to Il Borgo del Balsamico

How would you describe Il Borgo del Balsamico in a nutshell?

At Il Borgo del Balsamico we rent out three beautiful rooms and one apartment, right in our wonderful historic home with a peaceful atmosphere. The house was built in the 1700s and my father, who always loved the countryside, has always dreamed to own a country home. The company Il Borgo de Balsamico was started because of my father’s passion for aging balsamic vinegar, and it is now well known for its Balsamic. My sister and I built a very successful company based around our father’s passion and eventually decided to also open a beautiful small bed and breakfast in our house as this big and very beautiful property is perfect to be shared with guests.

Please tell us about the style of the interior of the B&B.

The interior style of Il Borgo del Balsamico comes directly from our passion for antique and modern vintage furniture. Different styles were mixed in order to create a very personal but very appealing style. We brought together some furniture from the 16th century and mixed it in with some modern vintage furniture from the 50’s. There are also paintings and sculptures from the 19th century, as we appreciate the design and beauty of those pieces. Additionally, all of the paintings are originals.

How would you describe the atmosphere of B&B?

The Borgo is kind of magical and everything is secluded. The house is not in the hills or the mountains or on the beach, but surrounded by charming gardens. You feel safe, in the luxury of a very peaceful and quiet place. The energy of this place is very special, as it’s like having a private home away from home. Our guests’ privacy is ensured, even if all rooms are fully booked as there will be no more than 11 guests in our large home. Every day they can enjoy the calm and exquisite atmosphere.

Who is the perfect guest for the house?

Families are really welcome and children too, but they have to know that this is a silent and peaceful place, and so it has to be. For example, there are no TVs in the rooms and we encourage a quiet and calm atmosphere. We do offer accommodations for people with dogs, as long as they are well-behaved.

Il Borgo is a stone building that holds three warm and spacious rooms and an apartment on the second floor. While our office is in the basement, there is a private entrance to the rooms and the apartment. Each of the guest rooms is furnished with a stylish mix of vintage and designer pieces.

The Cortina is the room dedicated to our passion for the Dolomites and is furnished entirely with antique furniture from Cadore. The double bed is topped by a 'witch', a half-queen, half-deer figure typical of Cortina houses, and the furniture is completely hand-painted. The double room has a private ensuite bathroom. The two large ogive windows overlook the park and rose garden. The room has a comfortable double bed and an en-suite shower room.

On the first floor of the old stone building are the three rooms. One of these is Ortigia double room furnished with original antique furniture and paintings by Italian artists and equipped with a private ensuite bathroom. The view is of the magnificent rose garden. The northern exposure makes Ortigia the coolest room in the building. The room has a large en-suite bathroom.

Room Gertrude Jekyll carries the name of one of the most popular English roses, but above all that of the famous English writer and garden designer who lived between the 18th and 19th centuries.

Gertrude Jekyll is a double bed that overlooks the garden and in particular, the 100-year-old Sequoia. Above the bed you can admire an altarpiece with a Madonna; the cedar shelf framing the bed exudes a wonderful fragrance. The room, very cosy and intimate, is perfect for a romantic weekend.

Reine des Violettes is a pink climbing rose with a hint of purple. The room named after it is a beautiful double decorated with photos taken by Robert Erdmann in Santa Margherita in '91. Two large herbaria overhang the bed, while large windows frame the centuries-old Sofora. The room can be used as a triple.

Please note, the double bed is equipped with a wide traditional wool mattress: it is not as flexible as a spring or a foam mattress. And the additional bed is low, particularly suitable for kids.

The Boule de Neige is a pure white Bourbon rose, which is 'stained' red in the bud.

A poem, like the room that takes its name: the original wooden floors from the early 1900s, the very large ogive windows overlooking the garden, the two 17th-century putti on the bed, the very high ceilings and the crystal drop chandelier make this a very elegant room.

On the walls are the original drawings from Maska's first collections, and in the bookcase are art and travel books, making it perfect for discerning and curious travellers.

Dark Lady is a beautiful and fragrant extra-double rose, deep crimson red. The room that bears its name consists of two double bedrooms, connected by a long corridor. In the centre is a bathroom with a large shower. Paintings, drawings and original photos from Maska's 1990s campaigns decorate the immaculate walls of the two rooms. A suite for travellers, writers, musicians, dreamers. A 'book-lined' room with a large fireplace above a specially constructed antique wooden bed with 17th century boards from a coffered ceiling.

Breakfast is included with a stay at Il Borgo del Balsamico, which we serve inside during the winter and outside overlooking the garden during the summer. Guests can enjoy our swimming pool, the beautiful Italian-style gardens, as well as all 10,000 square metres of our property. WiFi is available all throughout the house and we can of course help with recommendations for things to see and do in the area. One treat that we offer our guests is a tour to see how our balsamic vinegar is made, which includes tastings as well.

One highlight is a visit of our ancient acetaia and after your visit you can do a tasting of our traditional Reggio Emilia balsamic vinegar DOP and our Modena balsamic vinegar IGP. The visit and the tasting are included in the room rate.

And I would also recommend going to the Parmigiano Reggiano’s production to see how their cheese is made. Other interesting places to see would be Palma, Modena, and Bologna, which are all day trips from Il Borgo del Balsamico. Additionally, Reggio Emilia is a small city with lots of activities, including a theatre. The Emilia-Romagna region is perfect for outdoor activities, such as beautiful hikes in the hills and biking, including off-road biking through the woods. In the summer, there are festivals in the small towns nearby. One in particular is the festival of the string quartet that is very important here.

For dinner, there are many restaurants in the area, from creative dining to more traditional. Our favourite restaurants are about a 15-minute drive away. However, if guests prefer a shorter 5-minute drive, there are some good options in a nearby town. Additionally, for that scenic touch, there are nice restaurants in front of the mountains, which are about 25 mins away.

What a truly special place to unwind. Our room was warm, comfortable, and beautifully appointed.
The garden and lounge areas were peaceful and inviting, perfect for a game of cards and a bottle of bubbles from the self-serve fridge. Breakfast each morning was such a treat, with baked goods, fresh eggs, delicious Parmesan, prosciutto, Parma ham, and, most importantly, the balsamic made right at Il Borgo.The complimentary tour and balsamic tasting made the stay even more memorable. We are patiently awaiting our shipment of incredible vinegars! Roberta was knowledgeable and warm, as were all the hosts at Il Borgo.We left feeling relaxed and grateful and would absolutely love to return.

What a special place! The rooms are comfortable and well-kept, with a wonderful historic ambience (the main building was built in 1700). The pool and lounge areas are beautiful. Breakfast each morning was a delight, featuring fresh eggs from their hens, balsamic vinegar from their own label, and other local products. It felt like a country retreat, but it’s also not far from the cities (Parma, Modena, and Bologna are all in easy driving or train distance). We very much enjoyed the tour and balsamic vinegar tasting, which is free with your stay. Highly recommended!

Ein wunderbar verwunschener Ort, der Ruhe und den Charme eines alten italienischen Landsitzes ausstrahlt. Cristina und alle Familienmitglieder/Mitarbeiter sind überaus freundlich und engagiert.
Die 45minütige Balsamico-Führung ist wirklich interessant und vermittelt die Leidenschaft der Familie für dieses Produkt. Anschließend ist man allerdings für immer für minderwertigen "Balsamicoessig" verdorben.... ;-)
(Mini-Manko: die enge "italienisch" befahrene Strasse vor dem Anwesen lädt nicht unbedingt zum flanieren ein.)

We had a wonderful time in this hidden gem. We stayed at the beautiful Boule de Neiges room, enjoyed Home made breakfast With a view, spent a couple of lazy moments by the pool, and enjoyed the balsamico tasting and experience very much. You feel welcomed as if you would stay at a friend’s house. Thanks to Cristina’s tips, we visited the modern art collection In the old Max Mara factory , a real discovery. Don’t miss it! And do go for an Aperol Spritz in the old streets of Reggia Emilia , much calmer than Parma or Modena and just as beautiful.

Just excellent! The stay definitely was a 5, if not a 6, as it was just excellent. Il Borgo del Balsamico is a more than beautiful location, decorated with attention to detail. Also the hospitality of Cristina and her team was very welcoming and warm. I will definitely go back there!

The location of Il Borgo del Balsamico

Il Borgo del Balsamico is in the Emilia-Romagna region, in northern Italy. We are located on a very small street with villas scattered in the surrounding area, very wide and private. The property is very centrally located, close to Reggio Emilia and only two kilometres from the very small town of Albinea. The fast train station is 30 mins away by car. From there guests can easily take a train for 40 mins to Milan or Florence, and a mere 15-minute train ride to Bologna, Modena, or Parma.

I particularly enjoy this region because the people are friendly, it’s beautiful and easy to find good food anywhere in the region. This area is named ‘The Food Valley’ for the wonderful range of gastronomic choice made of tradition and old precious recipes, famous all around the world. It is even possible to visit local producers to taste the local foods like ham, cheese, and wines. Essentially, the rentals are located in an area that never gets too crowded.

When is the best time to visit Emilia-Romagna?

Basically it is beautiful here year-round, so there is really no high or low season in this part of northern Italy. It’s lovely in the spring to see the fantastic rose gardens, with a strong olfactory experience from the moment of entering the gate. The roses’ perfume is incredible, truly a breath of fresh air from the smog of the cities. September and October are also great months for a vacation trip to Italy, as in autumn the plants change colours and make this place even more gorgeous. Of course, in winter it feels like stepping outside of your rental home and right into a fairy tale.
