An introduction to Il Borgo di Galenda

How would you describe Galenda in a nutshell?

Galenda is a recently renovated 15th-century borgo in a quiet but easily accessible location in the hills of Tuscany’s dreamy Chianti Classico region. Each of the apartments combines authentic historical architecture with very modern interior design, making them ideal for families and small groups.

What was your inspiration for Galenda?

When my father found Galenda many years ago, it was a dilapidated village that he brought back to life. As the structure was already there, it made sense to create individual apartments and rent them out. The idea was to restore the historical substance so that it would last for the next 100 years.

During subsequent renovations in 2005 and 2019, we made the interior design more contemporary in order to get this contrast between the historical exterior and modern interior. For example, we have redesigned the bedrooms and added super comfortable box spring beds, built new wall panelling in bog oak and basically just brought everything up to date with a bit of a facelift.

Please tell us about the borgo.

Borgo Galenda is part of the village of Galenda, with around 15 locals still living in its historic core. For this reason, you shouldn’t think of it as a tourist resort. There are 12 apartments in total, some of which are rented out, and a communal pool that never feels crowded. When staying at the borgo, you are part of the village and have a connection to it. Galenda Borgo is unique in that it combines historic 15th-century walls with modern interiors and that doesn't happen very often in Tuscany.

Is Galenda best suited for adults or also families with children?

Galenda is absolutely perfect for families with children. We recommend Lippi for families with small children who are happy to sleep on the sofa bed and Bellini for families with older children. We have also constructed a children's pool so that the kids won't get bored!

To you personally what is so special about Galenda and how would you describe the atmosphere?

The special thing about Galenda is the wonderful surroundings of the Chianti Classico region. Tuscany is big and there is a gradation: Tuscany, Chianti and then Chianti Classico. And we are really in the heart of Chianti Classico, which is a very special area that’s beautifully situated in the hills and embedded in wonderful nature. The tranquility is fantastic and the changing light is just incredible!

Also special is the borgo’s proximity to the cultural attractions of Florence, Arezzo and Siena. So it's a combination of everything — the flair of the landscape, the fantastic cuisine and great wine, and the Tuscan people — all set in the middle of what is one of Italy’s cultural treasures. There are wonderful places all over the world. But in terms of the landscape, the quality of the food and wine, this area is simply a dream. When it comes to beauty and aesthetics, Chianti is world-class.

Il Borgo di Galenda rooms & rates

Within the borgo, we offer two apartments, Lippi and Bellini. Lippi has one bedroom and is designed for two people or families with small children while Bellini has two bedrooms and is perfect for four people.

Lippi is like a small studio with 50 square metres of living space. After ascending a flight of stairs, you arrive in the main living space, which features an open-plan kitchen, a dining area and a fireplace, as well as a lounge with a sofa bed that’s ideal for small children to sleep on. From the kitchen, you can directly access a small balcony with wonderful views over the borgo. It's the perfect setting for dinner or a glass of wine. In the back of the apartment, there is a double bedroom and a bathroom with a sink, toilet, bidet and shower.

Bellini is ten meters away from Lippi and overlooks part of the communal garden, with a table and small barbecue where you can enjoy the outdoors. From here, a flight of stairs leads to the kitchen and dining area (which is typical of Tuscany) and adjacent is a bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and tub. Also on this level is an elongated living room with a fireplace, a couch and two lounge chairs, plus a TV. From here, you also have access to a small balcony with a table.

Upstairs is the master bedroom, which is designed like a tower room. Adjacent is the main bathroom with a whirlpool tub and shower, toilet, bidet and sink.

Chianti is, of course, very much about fantastic gastronomy and wine and we are on the doorstep of some of the best wineries in the region. Dining ranges from simple trattorias to top-star restaurants. You’re sitting in paradise. There’s a very good restaurant about five kilometres from Galenda and the Castello di Ama winery is also just five minutes away.

In addition, there’s the culture. The Uffizi in Florence or the Campo in Siena are simply fantastic. For people who want to shop, you can head to the Prada and Gucci outlet centres or hit the great shops of Florence.

If you’re after something more active, you can also go hiking or cycling. Once a year, our municipality, Gaole, hosts the L'Eroica cycling race on historical bikes. Around 15,000 people from all over the world come to this small community to ride along the dusty roads wearing vintage clothing.

In addition you can choose from a variety of activities:

  • Swimming (communal pool on site)

  • Hiking

  • Mountain biking *

  • Playing golf (between Greve and Florence, about 50 km away, starting with handicap 36)

  • Vespa riding *

The location of Il Borgo di Galenda

Galenda is close to the municipalities of Castellina, Radda, Greve and Gaiole, which translates to total tranquility. But you can still be in the next town within five minutes where there is a small alimentari shop and bar. Within half an hour, you can be in Siena while Florence is an hour away. Arezzo is a 1.5 hours’ drive from the property and Rome 2-2.5 hours.

When is the best time to visit Tuscany?

Tuscany is gorgeous from April until deep into autumn. Sometimes we also spend Christmas and New Year's there with beautiful weather. But it can get really nasty between January and March. So unless you are a die-hard Tuscany/Chianti fan, you shouldn't be visiting for the first time between January and March.
