An introduction to Maidla Nature Resort

How would you describe Maidla Nature Resort in a nutshell?

Maidla is a unique, luxury nature resort featuring small, architecturally designed villas that offer a completely private and personal experience. It’s located within a 16th-century manor estate, so guests can time travel while staying in modern houses designed by Estonian architects. Recently, we opened SOO Restaurant, which has been ranked as one of the top restaurants in Estonia.

What is the story behind Maidla Nature Resort, what was your inspiration to create it?

Maidla Nature Resort is owned by a private investor who works as a startup entrepreneur. He is a bit of a travelholic and has visited a lot of exotic destinations. The more he travelled, the more potential he saw in Estonia to create something unique.

First, he had an idea to build a treehouse hotel. But at the time, he couldn’t find a suitable forest. Instead, he found Maidla Manor and thought the complex was a suitable place to create an exclusive accommodation experience for guests. It’s in the middle of nature but very close to Tallinn.

Estonia has a lot of forests and unique bogs, which are considered by locals to be a romantic place where you go skinny dipping in the summer. It’s something we take for granted here, but the more you travel, the more you start to miss these things and appreciate them. During the springtime, the bogs flood, which is quite special. So he thought he could create something unique that you can’t find anywhere else in the world.

Within 12 months of purchasing the estate, we opened our first villa to guests and we now have three villas. Each is designed by a different lead architect and has an Estonian name that is inspired by nature. Our plan is to build five more, creating a total of eight, before renovating the manor house, which is heritage listed.

While Estonia has become renowned as a startup hub, we also want to put the country on the map as a place with amazing, nature-based architecture.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design of Maidla Nature Resort?

Whichever villa you choose, you will have the full Maidla experience. It’s designed as an adults-only escape and a place to switch off for a couple of days. There is no Wi-Fi — it’s about being in nature and enjoying high-quality food.

We asked all of the architects to incorporate large windows into their designs, so you feel as though you are connected to the surrounding environment. While all of the villas have an outdoor space, each is very different, so if you stay in one, you can return to stay in another.

One is very small at just 21 square metres while the other is more than double that at 50 square metres, with a sauna and an outdoor fireplace. The third is 34 square metres and with an outdoor jacuzzi.

Maidla Nature Resort rooms & rates

Guests arrive at the manor house, with the old servants’ quarters now transformed into a reception area. Our “house fairies” will offer you a welcome drink and give you a short tour of the place before guiding you through the park to your chosen nature villa. Here you will have complete privacy — in the summer, you can’t even see the other villas.

Along the edge of the property is the Keila River, with a boardwalk and canoes that guests can use, while behind the manor is a lake.

The source of inspiration for Nature Villa Käbi came straight from nature. The striking look of Käbi, resembling that of a pine cone, was achieved by using wood shake siding, which has a distinctive brownish-orange color and covers the majority of the Villa’s exterior as well as interior.

Since we had such a great experience creating our first Nature Villa Kaseke together with b210 architects, we asked the lead architect Mari to push the limits once again to create another one-of-a-kind accommodation for our guests.
    Käbi opened in February 2022.

Nature Villa Kaseke is the first outcome of our ambitious idea to create an exclusive nature resort with luxurious and sustainable boutique villas. The name Kaseke is a nod to the birch trees surrounding the Villa which were all preserved during the construction works as not a single tree was cut down.

The exterior and interior of the Villa are made of thermally modified ash upholding the value of sustainability while creating a unique architectural design. Kaseke was born in collaboration with the talented b210 architects who exceeded all our expectations and brought our vision to life.

Kaseke has won many architectures and design awards, including the public vote in the small interior category of Dezeen Awards in 2021. In addition to some Estonian awards and nominations, KASEKE was also nominated for one of the most prestigious architectural awards in the EU — Mies van der Rohe. Kaseke was opened in August 2020.

Nature Villa Poku is as unique as the name suggests. The inspiration came from Maidla’s distinctive terrain, which also includes Carex stricta, more commonly known as tussock sedge. Estonians just call them pokus after a children’s book (Pokuraamat by Edgar Valter) and its main characters — Pokus.

The Nature Villa consists of 7 different-sized “pokus” that are all separate rooms with beautiful vaulted ceilings and gorgeous views overlooking the scenic wetland.

To honor the old Estonian traditions and achieve a truly authentic and natural look, the Villa was given a thatched roof, which blends seamlessly into Maidla’s environment. Poku is an outstanding architectural masterpiece by the beloved firm KTA — Kadarik Tüür Arhitektid. Poku is opened from June 2022.

When we opened our first nature villa, we didn’t have a restaurant yet. Instead, we had the idea of sending our guests to a gastronomic village around 15 minutes away. But as it is so popular, it was often difficult for our guests to get a table if they were booking last minute. So we started offering a private chef experience and that was very popular. A year ago, we hired a full-time head chef and now he does everything.

All stays include breakfast in the servants’ house, with the menu designed by our chef but handmade fresh each morning by our “house fairies”. We have several options that our guests can choose from, plus fresh juices and Estonian bread.

We also offer our guests two different dining experiences. One is a simple takeaway meal that is brought to the villa so that guests can enjoy it in privacy. The other is a five-course set menu prepared by Daanius Aas and served in the servants’ house.

The menus are inspired by nature and feature seasonal produce, much of which is foraged in the nearby forest and/or fermented. Daanius has a minimalistic style and is into pure tastes and unique combinations. For example, at the moment we are serving an ice cream made from potato peel. It’s an experimental, fine-dining experience. The restaurant also partners with a sommelier who has put together a wine list featuring mostly organic wines.

On select nights, we open the restaurant up for guests who are not staying at the resort and it’s somewhat of a gastronomic journey. Not only can they experience an exceptional meal that is served at the table by the chef but they can also tour the manor.

The location of Maidla Nature Resort

A hidden path just 45 minutes away from Tallinn and the airport takes you to Maidla Nature Resort in the middle of Estonian wetlands, where we’ve built tiny Nature Villas that sit on stilts.

Maidla is located in Rapla County, which isn’t known as a tourist destination and doesn’t have any “big” sights. Because there is a lack of public transport, you really need to rent a car to get here or take a taxi from Tallinn.

The town of Rapla is around 10 minute's drive from the property. Here you’ll find a couple of restaurants and services.

When is the best time to visit Rapla Maakond?

It is great to visit all year round. Maidla Nature Resort offers four magical seasons in nature – spring, summer, autumn, and winter. And we even have a fifth season – flood is called Fifth Season by the local village people of Soomaa National Park as floods occur nearly every year and in Maidla too.

So I think March is the best time to visit when the estate can be flooded and you have to use the boardwalks to access the villas. Unfortunately, it’s not something we can guarantee, as it depends on the winter and when the snow and ice melt. But we are open all year and it’s very comfortable in the winter as well.
