An introduction to Masseria Moroseta

How would you describe Masseria Moroseta in a nutshell?

Masseria Moroseta is a white stone farmhouse standing proudly on the ridge with views towards the sea. It’s a charming bed & breakfast with six rooms in a 5 hectare organic olive grove near Ostuni, the white town of Puglia.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the architecture?

It has a very relaxing atmosphere. There are a lot of private spaces where guests can lounge if they don’t feel like going out. The architecture works well with the sun when it hits at different times during the day. It reflects off the walls, creating Pantone-like color patterns.

What was your inspiration to open a small bed & breakfast in Puglia?

I always had the dream to work the land to produce food, vegetables or olive oil. So when I visited Puglia on holiday a few years ago, I fell in love with the place and decided to follow my dream. We have more than 600 olive trees and we produce our own organic olive oil. At some point we then decided to add six rooms to our farm as well.

To you personally, what is so special about Masseria Moroseta?

It’s special in the sense that it’s a modern version of a typical masseria. Masserias were known to be closed spaces surrounding a courtyard. We respect that design, but we’ve modernized it to offer more privacy to our guests.

And we are not only a bed & breakfast but we are also a farm producing olive oil, vegetable and different fruits. We invite our guests to tour our farm and we show them how our organic olive oil is made.

Who should stay at Masseria Moroseta and who shouldn’t?

Our bed & breakfast is a great place for couples who are looking for a private getaway. Due to the size of the masseria it is also perfect for a group of friends who want to rent the entire place.

I don’t think it is a great place for families, though. It’s more a relaxing retreat, and there are not many activities for children other than the pool.

Masseria Moroseta rooms & rates

Masseria Moroseta is a modern version of a traditional masseria. We were inspired by the typical masseria in Puglia, but we’ve modernized it. We are quite unique in that sense.

We furnished the masseria with local second-hand furniture, so it took us a bit more than a year to find all the different pieces in the local markets and antique fairs. If guests are interested in any of the furniture pieces, they can purchase them and we then replace them with other pieces. As our main building with the living room and veranda sits a bit higher, we have an amazing view of the sea and Ostuni over the olive trees.

There are six rooms at the masseria, four double bedrooms, one Junior Suite and one Master Suite. All of them have private outdoor spaces with beautiful views of the olive grove. We only use Italian linen for our king-size beds and all rooms have air-conditioning, a heating system and WiFi.

The 2 Suites have 45 square meters and feature a king-size bed with luxury linens, a bathroom with large shower, a private living room with fireplace and a day bed for a child or third person. The rooms have a private terrace with a stone sofa and a two hundred year old olive tree.

The rooms have air-conditioning, a heating system and free Wi-Fi. Soap, shampoo and showergel come from a small organic producer in Ostuni.

And of course we are always here to offer our guests recommendations on what to see and do in Puglia, and we can make reservations as needed.

In the morning we serve a delicious organic breakfast with free-range eggs from our own chickens. We don’t have a restaurant as we believe that our guests should enjoy the amazing food Puglia has to offer, but if someone wants to stay for lunch, we can provide a small salad or something like that. Ostuni has an amazing coastline and some of the most beautiful beaches of Puglia are near us. The natural park of Torre Guaceto is really close-by (12km) with some amazing long beaches. And if you want to stay closer to Masseria Moroseta, there are four really secluded beaches near here. The closest is about 3 kilometers away and others are about a 10-kilometer drive. The water of the Adriatic coast is crystal clear.

The Ionian coast in the west of Puglia is also only about one hour drive away and the area has longer, white beaches compared to he little bays on the Adriatic coast.

Lecce is one of the most amazing towns in Southern Italy and it’s less than an hour away. Martina Franca also has interesting Baroque architecture, so it’s like a smaller version of the more popular Lecce. Alberobello is worth a visit to see the unique Trulli buildings, it’s only 20 mins away.

I would also highly recommend to visit Cisternino, a very well kept small town with an amazing atmosphere. Polignano a Mare is another beautiful ancient town right on the coast. And of course there are some amazing beaches towards the Salento area on the west coast of Puglia.

The antique markets are also fun to explore and you can get some really good deals. They have them every Sunday in different towns.

And finally, there is Ostuni, one of the most beautiful towns of Puglia.

We had a fantastic time at Masseria Moroseta! The property is stunning, both interior and exterior beautifully built with great attention to detail. On top of that Carlo was a wonderful host, who made us feel very welcome and always had the best recommendations for restaurants or sights. i rate our stay as 4 on 5! Masseria Moroseta is an architectural pearl in the very south of Italy. Such a beauty with his white walls and the sober lines of the building, this combined with the wide view you get when you enter the living room. One can then breath the adriatic sea, just behind their own olive trees. ! The biological fresh made breakfast varies every day of the week, to start with a handmade smoothy, and ends with home made cake. Carlos, the owner, looks at his guests and so he suggests very nice places to dine or to lunch. ! The only comment we have, the Masseria has not such a good isolation. So you hear every little noise in the building. But luckily there is no noise in the neighberhood because its really situated in the middle of nowhere. And thank Heaven, also not far from the beautiful cosy village of Ostuni. ! A tip we can give, your "TomTom" will not be enough to find your way home to the Masseria, But Carlos best suggestion is to use Google mappy. With this tool you get on every charming spot in the country. Pitty we had to return already at 6.45 o clock a.m. Then it was a bit disappointing, our last breakfast on the day of our departure was very sober! We could take ourselves a coffee or thee and combine with a piece of cake from the day before, But Carlos wasn't seen anymore, and no bread or yoghurt, or jam... pitty. Although, we have nice memories to our holidays in Masseria Moroseta.

We had a fabulous time and we have made a new friend! Carlo is a great host! A romantic architectural gem hidden away in Puglia's olive groves. Carlo, the owner and host, is professional, friendly and discrete. His recommendations of local restaurants were spot on! The bottle of prosecco which was offered to us to celebrate our wedding anniversary was a very nice touch. We are contemplating visiting again in winter!

The location of Masseria Moroseta

The masseria is located only 3 kilometers from the Puglian coast and the small town of Ostuni, which is a town we love more than any other place in the area. When you drive on the main road from Brindisi to Bari, you will see the white town of Ostuni on the hill surrounded by the green of the olive trees — it is quite special.

I love the fact that Puglia is still pretty much unspoiled. You don’t see the same amount of tourists or big buildings on the beach as in other areas. When you go to the old town centers, they’re still very close to what they used to be and the people here are incredibly friendly as well.

And of course there is the food, which is amazing and at very reasonable prices. There are so many great restaurants in the area and Puglian food is delicious. The closest are in Ostuni and we are happy to recommend our favourites to our guests of course!

We are located in the middle of Puglia, so it’s a great starting point to discover all that Puglia has to offer. As such we always recommend our guests to rent a car but we can also offer private transport from or to the airport, from the masseria to a restaurant or for a day trip to other towns if you don’t have a car.

When is the best time to visit Puglia?

Puglia is a great destination all year round. But if you’re looking for the sea and a beach vacation, the best time is from May until October.

Spring and autumn are also amazing because it is warm enough to go for beautiful walks along the coast. This is also a great time for some local festivals like the harvest of the olives in autumn.

Since we have our spa with the indoor pool, Masseria Moroseta is also great in winter to escape and spend a few relaxing days in beautiful surroundings. We are also planning to offer some food courses and yoga classes.
