An introduction to myhomeinporto

How would you describe myhomeinporto in a nutshell?

myhomeinporto is a beautiful guest house in the Bonfim neighbourhood of Porto, in northern Portugal. This 1930’s house with a green tiled façade is my home. I wanted to meet new people and offer them a place to stay that feels like home, so I opened up three individual guestrooms to those coming to this beautiful city.

How would you describe the atmosphere of the house?

myhomeinporto is not a big guest house, so there are never too many people there. It’s a very quiet place, with lots of natural light. Built in the 1930’s, we tried to keep the original design as much as possible. In my opinion the ambience is equally as perfect outside as it is inside. The neighbourhood is full of beautiful tiled buildings with coloured windows, and gardens full of flowers and trees. It’s a very welcoming and open atmosphere, where you can hear the seagulls and smell the fresh ocean air.

And the interior design was done by you?

Yes, I worked as an interior designer for many years. I instantly had a clear idea of what I wanted to do with the house. Actually, doing the interior design was quite easy as the house is so beautiful. It was kept simple in terms of furniture and decorations, so that the atmosphere is light and airy yet cosy with the vintage wood pieces in all the rooms.

Who is the perfect guest for myhomeinporto?

The guest house is pretty centrally located, but not in a busy area. So, the perfect guest would be someone who doesn’t want to stay directly in the middle of the touristic area, but rather in a quieter home close to it.

myhomeinporto rooms & rates

Guests stay in a typical Porto house with three floors and a garden in the back. The original three-meter high ceilings compliment the wooden floors to create a warm atmosphere. The three guestrooms have double beds, as well as private bathrooms. The top room facing the street also has a balcony. Each room has a different style, so guests may choose from a green room, a yellow room, and a pink room. They feature unique family furniture and elegant decorations, which I have collected over the years living in Portugal, France and Spain.

The green room faces the garden and is flooded with morning light, while the yellow and pink rooms are facing the street and glisten with natural light in the afternoons. Two bedrooms are on the top floor, with the largest guestroom facing the garden. The third bedroom is on the middle floor, as well as the kitchen and dining room. My private apartment is on the ground floor, and also a library that is available to guests of myhomeinporto.

I prepare breakfast every morning. It is served in the dining room or in the garden. Breakfast includes fresh bread, homemade cake, fruit, yogurt, juice, tea, coffee, and other local products, such as ham, cheese, and vegetables. One of my favourite things to do is to prepare delicious meals for my guests, using fresh food from nearby markets. Breakfast is typically the perfect time to discuss the upcoming day. Of course, I am always available to exchange ideas with guests via e-mail prior to their arrival, and onsite during their stay at myhomeinporto.

I can offer many recommendations, depending on each guest’s interests. Porto is a small city and not as hilly as Lisbon, so it’s quite easy to walk around. As it has always been the country's most avant-garde city, I really enjoy walking around the city centre and the Baixa area, where there are houses with beautiful tiled façades. Another recommendation would be to visit the contemporary art museum Serralves with its beautiful gardens. On the property is a villa and park commissioned by Vizela Earl, which can be toured as well. The 40’s-style house there is a great example of Art Deco. I would also recommend taking a day trip to the beach. The tram from Ribeira provides beautiful scenic views along the river to the sea. After a walk along the beach guests should go to Matosinhos for the best fish in Porto, as they have a very good market and excellent fish restaurants.

The location of myhomeinporto

Things have changed a lot in Porto recently, as it has become more touristy and bustling. However, we’re in Bonfim, which is a quiet neighbourhood that dates back to the early 20th century. There is a metro station 80 meters from myhomeinporto, and the city centre and main train station are about a fifteen-minute walk away. Even though we are centrally located, it is still far enough away to offer a quieter, more restful stay, in a beautiful and luxurious home. There are nice shops and restaurants very close by in my neighbourhood, and plenty more in Baixa. The famous market Mercado do Bolhão, where I go grocery shopping, is very close to the house as well.

When is the best time to visit Porto?

Although I like all of Porto’s seasons, one of my favourite months is March, as all of the flowers are blooming. It is really amazing to see so many colours all around the city. Porto is quite known for their camellia flower, so much so that they even have an international flower exhibition when this flower blossoms. During May, the weather is perfect with sunny days that are not too hot. The end of the summer is also nice, especially September, making this a wonderful time to visit the vineyards in the Douro region a bit outside the city as the colours are changing.
