Ottmanngut
Ottmanngut is a charming small boutique hotel that lies nestled in an enchanting Mediterranean garden with beautiful views of the Alpine mountain tops.
It is easy to recharge your batteries at Pension Leuchtenburg, perhaps easier than at other places.
What is the story behind Pension Leuchtenburg, what was your inspiration to create it?
My parents rented the house for over 40 years and I grew up in this house. About four years ago, my parents decided to stop working in tourism/hospitality and I led a tour of other potential operators who could rent the place. I could see how much work it would involve and it wasn’t something I wanted to take on myself. But in the process of doing the tour, telling everyone how beautiful the place was and what they could do with the house, I convinced myself that we should keep it and do it ourselves.
Around the same time I met my boyfriend, who had just finished his master's degree and he agreed to do the project with me. While I have the hospitality experience, he is better with numbers. We started out slowly and as Covid happened, we had a lot of time to think about how we wanted everything to be.
Our idea was to create a place where guests don’t have the distance between them and the staff, as you do at a regular hotel. For me, the most important thing was to break the ice with guests and make it feel more like staying at a friend’s house. I also didn’t want it to be too sophisticated, where you’re afraid of touching anything because it’s so high-end.
Initially, we rented the property for a year and then the opportunity to buy it came up. It felt like doors were opening for us, so we walked in. Then, of course, we wanted to renovate it as most of the rooms were around 20 years old and there was the added pressure of having a lot of amazing hotels in our area. The renovation lasted from October 2022 to April 2023, after which we opened to guests.
How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Pension Leuchtenburg?
We worked with an architect on the interior design, Christina Biasi-von Berg of Biquadra. She’s based in Merano, although originally from Germany. She’s renowned for her sustainable designs and is really good with old houses — the property is listed so we couldn’t just do anything we wanted. It was a mix of our ideas and her interpretation.
I would say it definitely has a female touch — it is very colourful (there’s nothing black), warm and cosy. Guests always comment on the energy in the rooms. While the windows aren’t that big because it’s an old house, there are nice views of the lake and the walls are very thick, which I think adds to the atmosphere.
To you personally, what is so special about Pension Leuchtenburg?
I think it’s the energy of the space and the people who work here. We didn’t choose our employees based on their skills but more on their values and that they aligned with ours. The people who come here understand that it’s a human experience. Our employees are very attentive and they connect with people immediately.
Guests feel at home as soon as they arrive and they have everything they need - but not more. The luxury is to have enough. With only 24 people, we can offer a really personalised experience and create moments where guests can connect. For example, on Sundays, we have a long table dinner and it’s a great opportunity to socialise.
Guests often tell us that they find it easy to recharge their batteries at Pension Leuchtenburg, perhaps more quickly than at other places. They also comment on our team being outstanding and the quality of our food and wine service, with our specialty being natural, sustainable wine.
Pension Leuchtenburg was once a farmhouse and not originally designed as a hotel, so the most difficult thing to find is the entrance! When people arrive, we always go out to meet them as they may not be able to find the entrance otherwise.
You enter into a hall with several antique chairs and sofas, and there’s a double window with wonderful views of Lake Caldaro. Inside the house, there are lots of arches and the doors are quite small, so German people normally have to duck a little bit. In the summertime, it’s very cool inside and in winter, it’s always warm.
In total, we have 12 guestrooms. On the first floor are three bedrooms, on the second floor are four bedrooms and on the third floor are five bedrooms. We don’t have any lifts, so guests have to use the stairs. All of the bedroom doors are in forest green with red lights — this is how they always were and we needed to retain that for heritage reasons.
On the lower floor, we have a Finnish sauna within what was an old taverna built from porphyry stone. In this area, there is also a communal living room where guests can connect, as well as a room for yoga and meditation. We also have a bar and a wine cellar, not to mention a record player and books for guests to read.
Adjacent to the farmhouse is the terrace, which is the meeting point of the house and is located within what was once a barn. It has lots of big windows offering panoramic views of the lake. On the terrace, we have a little bar with a kitchen island, so it’s like being at someone’s house where you can have a chat while your drinks are being prepared. This is also where we serve breakfasts and dinners.
We are located on a quiet street on a bicycle trail - there are more cyclists than cars coming and going. Around 80 metres from the farmhouse is our lakeside property, which is around 500 square metres and exclusively for the use of our guests. Everyone has a key so they can enjoy the garden whenever they want. This is very special as most hotels send their clients to a public lido. Within the lakeside property is an outdoor sauna and an honesty bar where you can grab drinks and ice creams. We also have a rowboat and a pedalo for guests to use.

Normally we offer our guests half-board (breakfast and dinner). Our breakfast is a la carte and the menu changes each day. It’s served until 11 am, so guests can sleep in and enjoy it quite late. Dinner is also served on the terrace. In the afternoon, we have a small cart where guests can grab a snack if they’re hungry.
Use of the sauna and all the facilities at the lakeside property are included. Yoga and pilates classes take place around twice a week, depending on the interest we receive from guests. Once a week, we have a wine tasting at the house and on another day, a local winemaker comes to the property. We can also arrange for bicycle rentals and massages.
Workshops take place throughout the year, including things such as painting and cooking. We also have yoga, tantra and Wim Hof retreats throughout the year led by guest instructors.
Most of the people who come here don’t do a lot! They just come to switch off. But there are lots of cycling trails, including mountain routes and gravel roads, as well as hiking trails. Some people like to head out hiking in the morning, and then enjoy the rest of the day at the lakeshore. If you’re interested in wine, there are so many wineries accessible on foot from the property.
On average, our guests stay around three days, although this is getting longer with return guests, many of whom stay a whole week.
We are in the middle of nowhere — there is no bus service to our side of the lake. So you really need a car or a bicycle to get around. Lake Caldaro is surrounded by mountains and there are lots of great hiking trails, although it’s not the Dolomites. Wineries and apple orchards blanket the lakeshore, so it’s very green, and there is a forest directly behind us, which is great for dog owners.
At the same time, Lake Caldaro is a tourist area. The main town is around an hour away on foot. There are also lots of other little towns in the area that are very nice to explore. Bolzano is around 15 kilometres from us and is cool to visit on a rainy day. Merano is around 30 minutes away. Some guests also like to visit Lake Garda, which is only an hour by car.
This really depends on what you like. The high season months are July, August and September when the temperatures are around 35 degrees Celsius. You have long days and can just lie around at the lakeshore and eat outside. We also have air conditioning in the rooms.
Some people prefer a cooler season. In spring, the flowers are in bloom and the wineries are releasing their new wines. You can hike at the lower elevations but there is still snow up in the mountains. At the lakeside property, it’s possible to spend all day in the sunshine as it’s not so hot.
August is the harvest season and for me, is the most beautiful because of the colour and the light. Some guests still swim in early October and there is so much good food around.
In winter, the weather is still relatively good, with not much snow at our elevation and lots of sunshine. It’s possible to go skiing but you need to drive around 30 minutes to get there. Most of our winter guests don’t come for a skiing holiday but may go to the slopes once during a week-long stay. Winter is a particularly nice time for guests who want to escape the tourist season and just enjoy eating, rejuvenating in the sauna or going for walks. We also host a lot of workshops at this time of year.
