Ses Sucreres
A small boutique hotel only a short drive away from the beautiful beaches of the island of Menorca, Ses Sucreres has six individually furnished bedrooms with an eclectic and intimate atmosphere.
Petit Maó has a very personal atmosphere as every item was chosen with love and care.
How would you describe Petit Maó in a nutshell?
Petit Maó is a small boutique hotel in an 18th century manor house in Mahon, the capital city of Menorca, Spain. It resembles the story of friendship; my husband and I created this hotel together with two friends of ours. Urban in style and location, Petit Maó stands for a new concept of hospitality.
What was your inspiration to open two small boutique hotels on Menorca?
We prefer staying in small hotels when traveling, as it’s a much better model than big hotels. There are many people like us who are looking for another, better experience.
We decided to open our own two small boutique hotels on Menorca, even though neither my husband nor I had any professional background in the hotel business. But since I grew up in a family that was in the hotel world in Brittany, France, I understood how everything worked and what needed to be done.
What’s the history of Petit Maó?
Petit Maó is an old charming house. It was built during a very interesting and important period of Menorcan history. At the time when the island was under British rule, Mahon was very rich artistically and intellectually.
What has been the biggest reward for you running Petit Maó and Ses Sucreres?
The biggest reward of running our two boutique hotels is to see people happy and appreciative of the atmosphere we’ve created. They feel the same about the place, just like my husband and I.
The style of the hotel is modern and inspired by Nordic design. It also has a very personal atmosphere as every item in the hotel was chosen with great love and care. Petit Maó was opened just last year in August and even though it is quite a young hotel, it is very successful already.
Especially in winter many people stay with us for a couple of nights, as it is very cozy but at the same time so convenient as it’s so close to the airport.
There are six rooms in total at Petit Maó. All the rooms have very comfortable beds and are mostly kept in white, with high ceilings and a lot of natural light coming in through the windows.
This room at Petit Maó features a double bed, an en-suite bathroom with shower and is located on the ground floor at the back of the garden of the hotel. All rooms have air conditioning, there is no television.
This room at Petit Maó features a double bed, an en-suite bathroom with shower and is located on the second floor with beautiful views of the garden of the hotel. All rooms have air conditioning, there is no television.
The spacious suites at Petit Maó feature a double bed, an en-suite bathroom with shower and offer views over the street from the hotel. All rooms have air conditioning, there is no television.
The Family Suite at Petit Maó features a double bed, a second room for two additional singe beds, an en-suite bathroom with bath and shower and offers views over the street from the hotel. All rooms have air conditioning, there is no television.
At Petit Maó breakfast is included and our guests can enjoy our honesty bar where they can drink something fresh at any time during the day. We do not have a restaurant, but if our guests want to have dinner, they can enjoy it out on the patio by the pool.
There are many nice beaches in the north. Pregonda is a very long beach with the sand leading up to the dunes and green fields. It’s not the easiest beach to get to as you have to hike to it, but once you get there you’ll see that it is absolutely worth it.
In the west of Menorca is Cala Macarella, an absolutely idyllic cove with fine sand, calm water and sheltering hills. During the summer this beach is full of people but as the water is warm enough to swim in year-round, you should come here in the spring or autumn.
Most of our holiday guests don’t plan their day until right before leaving the hotel. We can recommend good places for lunch and markets to visit. After a nice day out they often stop back here for a drink and then head out for a late dinner at one of the restaurants.
I would recommend taking time to explore the island. There is a beautiful place for watching sunsets. Cova d’en Xoroi is a nightclub but is also open during the day and a very special place to visit.
Discovering the island on foot and by boat is probably the best thing to do. Taking a kayak is also a possibility and can be quite fun to do.
Petit Maó is in the old center of the city of Mahon in the southeast of Menorca, Spain. The location is a very good one to stay in as it is close to many bars, restaurants, the fish market as well as the port. Only 10 mins from the airport, it is very convenient for early flights. It is a good home base for visiting both the northern and southeastern coast of Menorca.
The best time to visit is in the spring when it’s sunny and the island is green, quiet and not crowded. You can walk everywhere and if you don’t mind fresh water, you can even go swimming. In my opinion April, May and beginning of June are the best times to visit.
