An introduction to Sea View House

How would you describe Sea View House in a nutshell?

The house was originally designed for Milan’s Salon del Mobile in 1998 by Swedish architect Thomas Sandell and Wallpaper Magazine and is a feat in compact living. Known by Sandell as the ‘inside outside house’ it is designed around a central courtyard, with the living area on one side and the bathroom and sleeping area on the other.

The house has a fun and relaxed atmosphere. There are large rocky outcrops to the West of the house, misty mountains behind the house and the forests and sea views to the front and east of the house. It is a real back-to-nature experience surrounded by Scandinavian design.

Sea View House rooms & rates

The house is about 100sqm all open-plan apart from the main double bedroom. It has been carefully designed around a courtyard and the boundaries of the terrace and decking are deliberately ‘blurred’ with the inside of the house.

All the beds have good quality mattresses and are invitingly made up with crisp white embroidered bed linen; bath and hand towels are provided, as are beach towels.

The sleeping arrangements are open-plan with minimal décor that are in keeping with the simplistic, contemporary vibe, although each bed has a curtain for privacy. There are two double bedrooms (one of which is totally private) and two singles built, cabin-style, into the corridor wall. The private double has a sliding glass doors onto a central courtyard. The second double is a cosy, 2m by 2m walled-in bed with a long window at the foot looking out onto the hillside. The ceiling of this room is adorned with large-scale images of woodlands.

The house is completely self-catering with a large high end electric fridge and is equipped with all the necessary cooking implements and crockery. There is a large Weber gas BBQ. This is normally where the majority of cooking is done. The kitchen area has a large dining table and chairs to seat six, and there are plenty of spots for eating out on the decking (shaded and sunny) made comfortable with huge day cushions, outdoor furniture and sun loungers.

On arrival there is a bottle of wine and bottled water provided and there are various supermarkets in the local town, Tarifa, which is 5 mins drive away. There is even a 24 hour supermarket just below the house which is part of a campsite which has all the basics. Otherwise you have all the wonderful restaurants and bars of the beaches and Tarifa town available to you all within a short drive.

The nearest beach is about 5 mins away as we are overlooking the bay of Gibraltar and I would also recommend the beaches of Tarifa and Bolonia which are a short drive away and are some of the best beaches in Europe.

There is a gym and horse-riding on the beach available at the Hurricane Hotel just below the house. Yoga and massages are available as well.

Other activities in the area are birdwatching, whale and dolphin watching in the Gibraltar and Tarifa marinas, kitesurfing and windsurfing on the beaches of Tarifa, golf and tennis, shopping in Gibraltar or Marbella, hiking and mountain biking as well as wonderful ancient city sightseeing at Cadiz, Sevilla, Cordoba, Ronda and Granada.

The location of Sea View House

The location of the beach house is up a track about 1km from the main road. The house is perched on a rock overlooking the sea. Guests should park outside the plot and walk the 100m down a country track to the house.

Tarifa town is about 5 kms away and the beach is 200 metres away as the ‘crow flies’ but is quite a steep hill so we recommend you drive down which takes only a few mins.

The house is located about half down the main beach so is very well positioned for all the beach restaurants and bars.

There are a lot less tourists and developments here on the Costa de la Luz than on the neighbouring Costa del Sol. We have the whitewashed villages in the hills of Jimena and Gaucin as well as the coastal ones of Tarifa and Vejer nearby. You also have Gibraltar, for shopping, and Sotogrande for golfing, a short 20 mins drive away.

When is the best time to visit Andalucia?

If you want action and people, then Easter, July and August; but if you want a little more peace, then May and June as well as Sept and October are our favourite months.
