How would you describe The Apartment Residence in a nutshell?
The Apartment Residence offers at-home living with an eclectic and hand-curated collection of furnishings.
What was the inspiration behind The Apartment Residence and how did it all start?
My wife has been working in the design gallery downstairs for many years and we’d had the idea about creating an apartment rental in the same building. When another apartment became available, we decided to buy it and create the same atmosphere as the gallery below. The building is more than 200 years old and overlooks the canal, so we wanted to retain its old-world feeling while renovating it with all the modern facilities.
The store still exists on the ground floor and has been recently refurbished too. Many of the newly-produced pieces found in The Apartment Residence have duplicates or there are very similar vintage items that guests can buy if interested. So if you like something, just ask!
How would you describe the atmosphere at The Apartment Residence?
We’ve kept the feel of the 18th-century townhouse while giving it colour and playfulness. There are various areas where guests can work or relax with the view of being inspired by the space.
To you personally, what is so special about The Apartment Residence?
The building is quite special to me as it was my family home and I think it perfectly showcases city life in Copenhagen. The neighbourhood, Christianshavn, has a unique, local feel and light from the canal, so the location and spaciousness also add to the appeal.
Guests often comment on the quality of the interior renovation and the hand-curated pieces – it’s colourful and there’s a lot of texture that’s not common in Danish interiors. I particularly like the kitchenette that was created by a cabinetmaker friend of ours and the artwork by Anselm Reyle that decorates this space.
Is The Apartment Residence best suited for couples, families? What’s your policy on kids?
It’s suitable for families with older children, although not young kids. Couples travelling together are also more than welcome but they must be willing to share the bathroom. We also have guests who come for long-term stays and use The Apartment Residence as a base for exploring Copenhagen and its surrounds.

When guests arrive, they’re met by a local concierge service that’s available for everything they need between 9 am and 5 pm. We provide a welcome pack including delicacies to prepare a light breakfast on the first morning. The fridge is stocked with a range of Danish produce, including wine and beer. There are also two bicycles that guests can use for getting around and we can organise a private chef to cook meals in The Apartment on request. laundry service is provided by an external company and the guest pays for this service themselves. Housekeeping service the apartment after 3 nights, changing bed linen as well. If more frequent maid service is wished then this is at additional cost.
Definitely the food scene — there are several excellent restaurants in the neighbourhood. I’d also recommend doing a canal tour as it’s a fantastic way to see Copenhagen. It’s very much a bicycle city, so exploring on two wheels is also ideal or just walking around to get a feel for the city and enjoying the parks. Our Concierge partner can assist with any bookings and holds excellent ideas on things to do and see while in Copenhagen.
The Apartment is located in Christianshavn, which is like a village within the city and just 10 minutes’ walk from the centre of Copenhagen. It’s a very close-knit community and many families have lived there for generations. The canal gives the neighbourhood a certain airiness and freshness, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants just a short walk away.
The natural answer would be to say summer, although it can get incredibly crowded. Most people would tell you anytime between Easter and mid-October but I personally like the wintertime and Christmas. There’s a particular charm to Copenhagen and you’re invited to be inside and get cosy.
