An introduction to Villa d’Orta

How would you describe Villa d’Orta in a nutshell?

Villa d’Orta is a 17th-century restored palazzo with luxurious contemporary furnishings that nestles in a romantic village overlooking Lake Orta.

How would you describe the atmosphere at Villa d’Orta?

Villa d’Orta is a uniquely relaxing place that will transport you to the past. It blends minimalism with unique furnishings and contemporary features. The privacy and amazing lake views from the top floor are the perfect ingredients for a unique experience far from the crowds (especially during peak season).

What is so special about Villa d’Orta to you personally?

Staying in the palazzo inspires the most incredible emotions. I consider it a spot where you can experience the authentic Italian lifestyle and hospitality. You can breathe in the property’s history while enjoying contemporary facilities, as well as views over the amazing gardens, ancient rooftops and lake. It’s perfect harmony all around.

What’s your background and what was your inspiration to open Villa d’Orta?

I owned and ran an advertising company in Milan for 25 years and currently live between Angera (Lake Maggiore) and Lisbon. I bought Villa d’Orta while I was working in Milan as I wanted a place in the Lake District where I could enjoy nature and relax on the weekends. I decided to rent it out on a short-term basis in 2017.

Please tell us about the interior design/architecture. How would you describe it?

We fully renovated the palazzo a few years ago with modern facilities while maintaining, restoring and enhancing all of its beautiful architectural details. It features gorgeous 17th-century elements such as wood flooring, large fireplaces and coffered ceilings. We have combined globally renowned design pieces with uniquely eclectic objects. The result is an interesting balance between modern and ancient architecture.

Is Villa d’Orta best suited for couples, families, groups?

Villa d’Orta is the perfect escape for couples and groups, and children from six years old are welcome. But in the case of younger children, we ask guests to sign a letter not to hold us liable for any possible injuries. Baby cots and high chairs are available upon request.

Villa d’Orta rooms & rates

We have four double ensuite bedrooms set across two levels, with all of the bedrooms fitted with mounted TVs and Frette sheets for the ultimate comfort. The bathrooms are appointed with Acqua di Parma toiletries and Frette towels. Every room is connected to the property’s Wi-Fi and there is a music system in each.

On the ground floor, there is a study featuring a stunning fresco, a modern kitchen and dining room, as well as a guest bathroom with Tom Dixon accents. The spa is also here and boasts an indoor swimming pool (12 x 2.5 meters) with a waterfall and hydromassage jets, a Turkish wet-dry sauna and showers. The spa can be accessed from both the garden and the house.

All rooms lead out into the romantic garden, which is adorned with columns and protected by high walls to ensure maximum privacy during intimate lunches and candlelit dinners. The outdoor Denon dining table seats eight people comfortably on iconic Philippe Starck chairs. There are also four comfortable chairs and two sun loungers that are ideal for reading or late-night conversations.

The back entrance leads directly to the stairwell and the first floor where there is a spacious living room with a fireplace and coffered ceiling. Aside from a state-of-the-art TV with a soundbar, there are also board games and a PS4 for guests to use. Also on the first floor is another guest bathroom and two ensuite bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with a king.

On the second floor is a beautiful porch with a vaulted ceiling that connects to two bedrooms and a music room. The latter enjoys magnificent views across the lake, the island of San Giulio and the Monte Rosa. On the opposite side of the building, you have the laundry room with washing and drying facilities.

Villa d’Orta reviews

5 of 5 stars
Verfied Welcome Beyond stay
We chose the Villa dei Leoni for an annual family reunion with our adult children and their partners. Upon arrival we were happy from the first moment with this choice of accommodation. The building exudes history and yet, thanks to the careful restoration, is in every way up to today's elevated living standards. The selection and composition of the furnishings is exquisite, witty and sophisticated. The attractive green courtyard is a marvelous place to stay with a nice atmosphere. The indoor pool and steam bath are not only a pleasant plus when the weather is bad. Giovanni is a great and pleasant host. In addition to a welcome basket with fruit, wine and water, the basic things such as coffee, spices, toiletries and sufficient toilet paper were available in sufficient numbers. We would unreservedly recommend the Villa dei Leoni even to our best friends.

Verfied Welcome Beyond stay
Orta is special compared with its lake peers. More eccentric, authentic, less impacted by tourists flows encountered at Maggiore or Como. Palazzo dei Leoni is on the same pace. This 17th century house has style (perfect mix between the original building and modern furnishing) and a big soul. Perfect location, not too close and not too far from the Lake. Despite the the absence of a true garden (it has a courtyard instead) , it is very comfortable and welcoming. Swimming pool and spa are also a plus. Gio is a perfect guest, always keen to help and responsive when something goes wrong. The cherry on the cake is Edoardo and his grocery next door. Great choice of local salumeri, cheeses, fruits and vegetables. We all love our stay !

The location of Villa d’Orta

The palazzo is located in the heart of Vacciago, one of the most beautiful villages on Lake Orta. Orta San Giulio and the lakeshore are three kilometres away while Miasino and Ameno are also just a stone’s throw from the property.

There is an amazing delicatessen next door selling a great selection of cold cuts, cheeses, fruits, vegetables and wines. Nearby you will find a wide selection of restaurants for all palates, from simple trattorias to three Michelin star restaurants.

Lake Orta is less than an hour’s drive from Milan and 45 minutes from Malpensa Airport and Lake Como. Lake Maggiore is around 20 minutes away and you are never far from high-end restaurants and luxury boutiques.

The gorgeous nature, history and authenticity of the region, as well as the cultural activities that make Lake Orta one of a kind.

When is the best time to visit Lake Orta?

September to November and April to June are when the area is at its best. In winter, you can still enjoy the amazing landscapes and the region’s renowned wine and food.
