An introduction to Villa Puglia

How would you describe Villa Puglia in a nutshell?

A modern take on traditional Puglian life. Villa Puglia is a former farmhouse restored to its original beauty with a very authentic and modern design. Everything about the villa was carefully thought out in terms of the design and our guests’ needs. Villa Puglia is a luxurious, spacious and exceptionally comfortable house set amongst its own grove of ancient olive and almond trees in the Puglian countryside. It has been decorated with love for design and an eye for detail by meshing the old with the new. It’s a luxury design villa that offers inside and outside living at its best!

What was the inspiration behind Villa Puglia and how did it all start?

We’re both from the Netherlands but have been living outside of the country for many years. When we met in Aberdeen we immediately clicked — we had the same goals, wishes, and passion. One of us is from a design background and the other grew up in the hospitality world, so our skills perfectly complemented one another.

We had this idea to find a house in an idyllic location that felt isolated (without being too isolated) and that would be spacious enough for families or groups of friends to stay together. We’ve both moved houses a lot, so we were inspired to create a wonderful place that was our own while catering to the higher end of the holiday rental market. Originally the idea began in Spain, then later moved to Puglia and within 2.5 years, we had realized it.

How would you describe the atmosphere at Villa Puglia?

There’s a little bit of Scandinavian influence and a homely atmosphere, coupled with a boutique hotel feel. Rather than high architecture, it’s a really liveable design. It feels like your home but better!

Is Villa Puglia best suited for couples, families? What’s your policy on kids?

We both have young kids and it’s perfect for families - there are baby beds, kids’ cutlery, everything you need. But it’s also ideal for groups of friends or families with older children. We’ve noticed that a lot of our guests come from a creative background (architects, photographers, designers), so we feel that it attracts people who are looking for something special and appreciate the attention to detail.

To you personally, what is so special about Villa Puglia?

Villa Puglia is absolutely the perfect combination of great design and guests' needs. We used the traditional charm as a springboard for the creation of a perfectly designed modern holiday home with a boutique hotel feel. The result is a beautiful villa excellent for both in- and outdoor living. It is all about making the very most of the time spent with family and friends or a romantic getaway.

Villa Puglia rooms & rates

Villa Puglia comprises a three-bedroom house and an additional guest house, surrounded by 2 acres of olive trees. From the main entrance, you arrive in a beautifully decorated hallway that leads to a spacious open plan living-dining area with vaulted ceilings and doors and windows overlooking the courtyard and the olive grove. This area features a dining table and a lounge area with a TV (and Netflix). The open-plan kitchen is Danish-designed and equipped with high-quality appliances, as well as plenty of plates, glassware, pots, and pans — everything you need.

The large, enclosed garden has various terraces offering both sun and shade. Outside of the kitchen, you will find a terrace with design lounge chairs and the outdoor kitchen with a covered terrace and a big barbeque grill. On the other side of the house is the heated swimming pool. The pool has a shallow ledge at one end that’s great for young kids or just to relax on. Everything is on hand for a fabulously relaxing holiday!

All four bedrooms have a ‘boutique hotel style’. The master bedroom with vaulted ceilings has doors that directly access the outdoors, as well as its own ensuite bathroom that is beautifully designed with a stone yellow sink dark iron tiling. The hallway also leads to the other two bedrooms that overlook the garden and the poolside. These two bedrooms share a bathroom with beautiful marble tiles and high design finishes.

The guest house is just a few steps away from the farmhouse. This very bright dependence is styled just as beautifully as the rest of the house with high design finishes and has a nice sofa that’s ideal for a little solitude. All of the bedrooms boast high-quality hotel beds, which guests always comment on for being so comfortable.

Puglia is all about discovering its diversity; the beautiful historic cities with striking architecture in combination with an amazing coast where you find beaches that are amongst the loveliest in the Med. Every city is built using different materials and there are amazing market squares to explore. Puglia is about finding your own experience and there are lots of hidden gems.

Some lovely towns in Valle d’Itria are Trulli wonderland Alberobello, Locorotondo, Cisternino and our personal favorite Ostuni with its stunning panoramic views.

Another must-see is Lecce, an incredible charming baroque masterpiece also known as ‘Florence of the South’.

The location of Villa Puglia

Villa Puglia is immersed in the beautiful countryside of Valle d’itria with views taking in large expanses of olive groves. The central location of Villa Puglia makes it really easy to access the entire region. It’s less than 10 minutes’ drive to Ceglie Messapica, which is a historic town but hardly receives any tourists and is renowned for its gastronomic scene. So, there are some great restaurants where you can enjoy the local far. The historic ‘White town’ of Ostuni is just 30 minutes away.

A 225-minute drive will see you at the beautiful beaches on the Adriatic coast that offers stretches of the sandy and rocky coast. The Ionian Sea is just a little further away from but the long expanses of sandy beach found there are of spectacular beauty. Lecce is also less than an hour’s drive to the south. That being said, nothing is within walking distance of the property and you really need a car to explore.

When is the best time to visit Puglia?

The best answer to when to travel to Puglia question would be anytime. Puglia is a year-round destination because of its temperate climate. However, if you are looking strictly for a beach or seaside vacation, May to October is the best time. Nevertheless, the scenery, culture, food, wine, and history – Puglia makes a fabulous off-season destination. The weather during November and April can also be sunny, but with lower temperatures.
