Masseria Petrarolo
A farmhouse turned luxury vacation rental, Masseria Petrarolo in Puglia combines rustic warmth with elegance. Nine bedrooms in the villa and pool house are set in olive and citrus groves.
The best thing is the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere — waking up with only the sounds of the birds and eating breakfast outside amongst the olive trees.
How would you describe Villa Subbiano in a nutshell?
Villa Subbiano offers a truly authentic experience in the heart of rural Puglia. It’s set in a country villa that’s been beautifully restored using local materials, traditional building methods, and details. The result is a three-bedroom house that fits perfectly within the surrounding olive grove — a real Italian vernacular.
Please tell us about the interior design/architecture. How would you describe it?
The renovations were carried out by of our good friend Andrew Trotter (who designed Masseria Moroseta) and began from the ruins of a traditional lamia (farmhouse). It’s been given a modern edge while still maintaining its rustic, light and airy feel.
Bespoke kitchen benchtops and bathroom sinks were made from concrete and a fireplace was added to the back room. A new outdoor kitchen and alfresco seating areas were designed to take full advantage of the great weather and rural setting. We also added a long wall alongside the pool to give the feeling of an outdoor room, as well as more seclusion for swimmers.
How would you describe the atmosphere at Villa Subbiano?
During the restoration, we wanted to ensure that respect was given to the original heritage of the building while also adding serenity and comfort that defines traditional Puglian architecture. I feel that we’ve successfully preserved the historic atmosphere to give the space a charming and relaxing feel.
To you personally, what is so special about Villa Subbiano?
The best thing about Villa Subbiano is the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere — waking up with only the sounds of the birds and eating breakfast outside amongst the olive trees.
Is Villa Subbiano best suited for couples, families? What’s your policy on kids?
Families with children are welcome — there are three bedrooms, with a maximum capacity for six guests. We can also provide baby cots for children under three. However, pets are not allowed. It’s worth keeping in mind that the villa is on one story (there are no stairs), so can be accessible to those with limited mobility.
Villa Subbiano is set within a 5.3-acre olive grove, which immediately creates privacy and a feeling of simplicity and calm. When you enter the building, a formal lounge leads to two large bedrooms with king-size beds, en-suites and doors leading directly to the garden. All of the spaces have been furnished and detailed with a simple yet elegant touch that meets guests’ needs.
If you continue through the lounge, you’ll arrive at the open-plan kitchen and another relaxed living area with a fireplace. Double glass doors lead to a large covered terrace where there are an outdoor kitchen and alfresco dining area shaded by pergolas, with views across the olive grove and beyond.
A short walk through the olive trees leads to the swimming pool that’s framed by lavender on one side and a spacious sunbathing area on the other. A curved wall around the pool creates seclusion and there are two outdoor showers for freshening up.

Lecce is also well worth a visit, as is Martina Franca for its Baroque architecture. If you’re interested in seeing Puglia’s unique Trulli buildings, then head to Alberobello, or you could visit Oria, Ostuni and Monopoli, all of which have retained an authentic Italian reality based on tradition.
Villa Subbiano is a 10-minute drive from the historic town of Ceglie Messapica, which is steeped in tradition and charm. It’s renowned throughout the world for its gastronomy, architecture, and history.
Ceglie is very central. Within 30-40 minutes’ drive, you can be down in Lecce or up in Alberobello. The house is also in the heart of the Pugliese olive groves — you can’t get more local than this. And the food is very good too!
Puglia is beautiful in both the summer and winter. The sea is completely unique if you’re visiting during the warmer months but there are also plenty of authentic little towns that you can explore when visiting during cooler weather.
