How would you describe A|S Boutique Residence in a nutshell?

A|S Boutique Hotel is a unique boutique hotel set within one of Old Havana’s UNESCO-protected houses that draws on European elegance, art and design.

What was the inspiration or story behind A|S Boutique Residence?

I come from the international fashion industry and have travelled all over the world staying in very good boutique hotels. So I’ve always had a fascination with them and an understanding of what I feel works and what doesn’t. My partner is from Havana and knows the city inside out. We particularly love Old Havana, so we decided to create a boutique hotel that reflected our needs and tastes.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design?

It took two years of renovations to restore the building to its former glory. It combines the colonial architecture of Old Havana with vintage European furnishings and design objects, as well as large paintings that take advantage of the property’s high ceilings. Our first clients were particularly enthusiastic about the residence’s colonial feel blended with modern luxuries and its location in the heart of Old Havana. It has an authenticity and with all the comforts people want.

To you personally, what is so special about A|S Boutique Residence?

It has the intimacy of a house, with just a few guest rooms, but at the same time, it offers the luxurious amenities and design of a hotel. Unlike many of Havana’s hotels, which are grand and impressive, they don’t offer much participation in local life. At A|S Boutique Residence, the rooftop terrace is always calm and you’ll usually have the salon to yourself, with a maximum of 10 people staying at any one time. On the other hand, you can head downstairs to mingle with the locals and experience the city’s real environment.

Is A|S Boutique Residence best suited for adults or also families with children?

It’s really designed for adults as all of the rooms have king beds. We also have a policy that only children aged above 16 years can stay.

A|S Boutique Residence rooms & rates

The hotel occupies a large townhouse that’s set across two floors in what is rather a unique concept. On the ground floor is the breakfast room and a cafe-style space that is open to the public. We serve good Cuban coffee here and it’s connected to an art gallery where local and international artists are exhibited, and we sometimes have live music events here. The Art Suite is also located on the ground floor.

The upper floor is exclusively for guests, with four duplex bedrooms and one suite that boasts its own balcony and living room. Each of the duplex rooms is between 20 and 25 square meters, with loft beds and walk-in showers. Also on this floor is a salon with huge doors leading to the balcony and a low table where you can read art books. The salon features beautiful old pillars with hand-carved decorations and the entire house is adorned with original tiles. Adjacent to the salon is a patio that opens onto a nice terrace that’s accessible from each of the duplex rooms.

On top of the house is a large rooftop terrace with a cocktail bar where complimentary drinks are served for guests at the end of the day. Sometimes we host yoga retreats here or salsa evenings.

A|S Boutique Residence has an elegant patio terrace and a generous rooftop terrace with comfortable lounge seats and a great cocktail bar, where you can enjoy the daily rooftop experience with panoramic sunsets and spectacular views over the old city.

Aside from the cocktail bar on the roof and the downstairs cafe, we can also arrange for a private chef to prepare dinners for guests at the property. I’d recommend doing a walking tour to explore Old Havana’s plazas and heritage sites to get lost in the countless small picturesque streets where you will experience the real life of Havana's residents and where you will find unexpected art galleries, local food shops or cafe's and restaurants.

Many of the old colonial buildings haven’t been restored, so it feels like you’re stepping back in time. A classic car tour along the Malecon boulevard and the areas just outside of Old Havana is also a great idea as it will give you a better understanding of the city. A very local experience is going to one of the casas da musicas — small theatres where famous artists perform and people love to dance. There are also several fine museums, theatres and performances by the Cuban National Ballet if you’re after something more upscale.

Beyond Havana, many people like to do an overnight trip to Trinidad, which is around 350 kilometres away. It’s a beautifully preserved, UNESCO-listed town from the colonial period and very authentic. Another destination I would recommend is Viñales, which is around 2.5 hours’ drive from Havana. It’s set between extraordinarily shaped mountains and gives you a sense of Cuba’s nature, with plenty of outdoor activities such as horse riding.

I'm not someone who uses the word 'perfect' a lot because I always believe in the power of potential but A|S Boutique Hotel comes pretty close to perfection.
An exquisite refurbished Unesco building that recently underwent a complete modern renovation - our room was light, comfortable and the perfect getaway from the hustle that is Old Havana. The location of the hotel is perfect, in walking proximity to old and modern Havana.

Breakfast is amazing, with three rotating options and THE best coffee !
All staff at the hotel are generous with their kindness and time, truly prepared to help in any capacity possible.

If you are planning a trip to Havana, this is your place. You will be embedded into the neighbourhood and fall in love with the team.
If I ever travel back to the island, this is the only place I am staying. Massive shoutout to Andre and Sandy for being such incredible hosts !!

The location of A|S Boutique Residence

The property is in the oldest and most beautiful part of Old Havana, with most of the city’s historic tourist attractions like the Capitol and the Great Theatre of Havana within walking distance. Also, the Grand Central Station is just a 5-minute walk from the mansion as is the famous boulevard Malecon Avenue de Porte. The famous Castillo del Morro is accessible within a 15-minute drive and in 30 minutes you can be at the beautiful beaches.

Our street is very authentically Cuban and there is hardly any traffic because it’s so narrow. It feels very local, even though you’re so close to the main plazas, and the area is never overwhelmed by tourists.

When is the best time to visit Havana?

The peak tourist season is from the end of October to mid-April when it’s cold in much of the Northern Hemisphere and people want to escape somewhere warm. In December, the temperatures in Havana are still around 24°C or 25°C. From mid-April to October, it’s much hotter (around 30°C or 32°C) and more humid. But the weather is always good, so you can really visit anytime you want.
