Fjellhytte
Offering views across the mountains of Trysil, Fjellhytte is a beautifully crafted wooden cabin. It offers four bedrooms and a sauna, all on the doorstep of Norway’s largest ski resort.
We wanted to create a space to experience the constantly changing landscape outside.
How would you describe Aurora Cabin in a nutshell?
Aurora Cabin is a secret hideaway in the magical Lofoten Islands. The dramatic scenery and unique landscape can be observed from the cosy wooden cabin, which is located at the edge of Austvågøya’s highest mountain, Higravstinden. It’s the perfect place to recharge after your adventures and observations in the archipelago.
What is the story behind Aurora Cabin, what was your inspiration to create it?
The idea was to create an architectural space made of untreated wood and handcrafted furniture in northern Norway, where architecturally designed places are hard to find. We wanted to create a space in which you can fully experience the constantly changing landscape outside from different angles.
How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Aurora Cabin?
All of the interior furnishings, from the flooring to the kitchen, were made from untreated timber by a local carpenter. His dedication to high quality and attention to detail can be experienced throughout the house. It’s within this warm atmosphere that the body and soul can come to rest and fully immerse themselves in the surrounding landscape.
To you personally, what is so special about Aurora Cabin?
The untouched surroundings in which the house is embedded, where you have the chance to observe nature and its wonders from different perspectives.
To maximise the outlook, the layout of the house is designed as a single space. From the spacious living area, you can look out across the tremendous Austnesfjorden, while the sleeping area offers great views toward the mountain massif of Higravstinden.
From the two bedrooms on the ground floor, you can access the bathroom through wooden sliding doors. Observing sea eagles is best from the upper nook, which has a green window bench. A third bedroom is located under the second pitched roof, which you can reach via a ladder.
OVERVIEW
The house accommodates up to 6 persons, but is comfortable for 4 persons. Wooden sliding doors separate rooms within the open floor plan, so the house suits people who know each other well.
Aurora Cabin has a fully-equipped kitchen and a washing machine that guests are welcome to use. On arrival, we provide a welcome basket filled with coffee, pasta and shortbread. A baby bed and high chair are available on request.
Depending on the season, there are many activities available in Svolvaer, which is a 25-minute drive from Aurora Cabin. These include everything from fishing excursions to sea eagle tours and guided photography trips.
I would recommend going hiking or ski-touring on Higravstinden, with trails starting directly from Aurora Cabin’s doorstep. Henningsvaer, with its little shops and bars, is wonderful to walk around or you can take a speedboat excursion to the famous Trollfjord.
Aurora Cabin is located at the end of a steep street, within a small holiday cottage area of about 15 houses. This itself is part of a little village, although there are no supermarkets or restaurants there. In Svolvaer, which is a scenic 25-minute drive, you’ll find restaurants, supermarkets and everything you need. Svolvaer is the capital of the Lofoten Islands.
The house itself is surrounded by the most beautiful nature overlooking Austnesfjorden. Hiking adventures leave from your doorstep.
You can fly from Oslo to Narvik, then rent a car at Narvik Airport and make the two-hour drive south to Aurora Cabin. As Narvik lies within the Lofoten landscape, your journey starts as soon as you begin driving to the cabin.
Each season has its own charm. In the summer, the mountains are green and the fjords a turquoise blue colour, plus you have long nights. In autumn, the leaves of the birch trees start to turn shades of red and yellow while the wintertime offers magical white landscapes and clear nights.
From September to March is the best time to observe the northern lights.
