An introduction to hinterhideout x

What is the story behind hinterhideout-x?

At hinter, we are trying to navigate this line between a short-term rental business and a hotel. It’s a new branch in hospitality that has been around for less than 10 years. How do you create a brand that has the consistency of a hotel chain but is a short-term rental property?

To achieve brand consistency, every space has to be curated by us. Some of the properties we own and others have been suggested to us by owners.

Over the last few years, we have started to work collaboratively with different partners, so guests can expect the same designers and the same experience but at a different location. It hasn’t been a fast growth because we are making conscious decisions about what to add to the brand.

hintershelter and hinterhideout-x are both designed by Saucier Perrotte, the architect who was involved with creating hinterhouse. We have been waiting around two years for their completion as we like his style.

Both houses are a bit bigger than our previous properties as we wanted to expand the hinter concept to host families and retreats while retaining the zen vibe. The idea is for them to become nature retreats where people can stay for a week or so but with the amenities of a spa, such as hot tubs and saunas.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of hinterhideout-x?

We went with a lot of Scandinavian design from the 70s and 80s, which is not only a homage to older designers but also in line with our sustainability initiatives. The houses are super modern and minimal but incorporate older furniture and design pieces that have been recycled and revived. We partner with a curator who specialises in furnishings and every season, we switch in and out pieces to make it a dynamic space — it’s like a collection.

There are lots of windows and simple lines — less is more. This is not just about following a minimalist trend but creating spaces that give you more space. If there is less clutter, your brain feels less busy and you have more space to think. With architecture and design, you can do things with light to make the human brain appreciate certain things and patterns or see something in a very specific way.

We have tried to curate as many moments like this as possible. Sometimes with fewer things around you, with a sense of simplicity, you appreciate time more. The idea is that guests feel that things are simple and there is not a lot to do, in a good way.

To you personally, what is so special about hinterhideout-x?

Because of its shape and design, it doesn’t feel like a normal house. It’s completely different.

hinterhideout x rooms & rates

hinterhideout-x is influenced by a Quebec sculptor who was very prominent in the 60s and 70s. The house feels like a sculpture — the shape is very funky with all these cubes and different angles. It’s like a tetrix piece that fell to the ground. As you move around, you see different shapes from different rooms.

On the first floor is a master bedroom with an ensuite and the main living room, which is really cosy. On the second floor are two identical bedrooms, both spacious and with king-size beds.

The third floor comprises a large balcony with views of the mountains and the ski resort. It’s designed as a space where groups can hold workshops or yoga classes. All around the house are spaces for green roofs and we are going to start growing different plants here.

Outside is a hot tub and a massive sauna with a window overlooking the forest.

Included in all hinter stays is a full coffee experience with a focus on pour-over coffee. We include high-quality beans from Dispatch and all the equipment you need — the whole idea is to slow down and learn new things. We do have a French press if guests are looking for a faster brew. We also provide teas (including roasted tea), spices and cooking oils.

Upon request, we can offer suggestions for massage therapists, caterers and chefs, as well as yoga teachers. As we are in the middle of nowhere, we have Starlink internet and the house is very well connected.

Soon we will be opening an online store featuring all of the furnishings and pieces from the house. This allows guests to learn the story behind a piece and discover some of the emerging artists we are working with.

The area offers an abundance of activities to do out in nature, no matter what the season, and it has a nice, northeast Canadian vibe. Aside from skiing, there’s snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and dog-sledding in the winter, as well as cross-country skiing in the national parks.

In summer, you can go hiking in the mountains — just 20 or 30 kilometres to the north and it’s nothing but wilderness! The area is packed with lakes and often you’re the only person. Once the snow melts, there’s a massive river that flows down the mountains. You can be driven up to a certain point, then paddle down in a kayak or canoe, stopping at one of the many sandy beaches to picnic in the middle of nowhere.

We’ve also partnered with a new restaurant in the area, Maison de Soma, which is 12 minutes’ drive from the house. It’s a 900-acre property in the middle of the woods and offers a high-end yet laid-back food experience. There are chefs from both Quebec and Europe, and they source a lot of produce from their land. It’s more than a restaurant. You can have 6 or 9-course meals and there are long tables so everyone is eating together.

The location of hinterhideout x

hinterhideout-x is located in the Laurentians of Quebec, just fifteen minutes from Mont Tremblant, one of the largest ski resorts in the northeast. It’s a large hub but as we’re a short distance away, you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere.

When is the best time to visit Quebec?

Honestly, every season has something special — it’s impossible to choose! The white palette of winter juxtaposed against the black exterior of the house is extremely photogenic and beautiful. The property itself can be discovered with snowshoes and curling up by the fire is encouraged.

In the springtime, the water starts to flow, the buds are blooming and more wildlife can be seen. This is also when the hiking season commences. In summer, you can go cycling and swimming in the lakes, as well as visit the local wineries. Fall is my favourite time to go hiking when the leaves are turning and I love enjoying the fire in the evenings.
