Playa Vik
Surrounded by the pristine beaches of José Ignacio, Playa Vik is South America’s most exclusive small boutique hotel with just four suites, and six casas.
Estancia Vik does not just provide the ultimate luxury travel destination, but it provides a culturally authentic retreat for those seeking to experience the real Uruguay.
How would you describe Estancia Vik in a nutshell?
Vik Retreats are a collection of incredible properties revolutionizing the way in which travelers experience South America. With art as their focal point, each retreat is truly remarkable and a celebration of José Ignacio, the fishing village where they are located.
Estancia Vik in José Ignacio is a small boutique hotel with just twelve individually designed private suites providing an authentic luxury retreat for those seeking to experience the real Uruguay.
Please tell us a bit about the history of Estancia Vik and its architecture.
Estancia Vik was designed with the vision of creating a private home, an approach that has made for a uniquely residential property. Every design detail was carefully thought out, something which can truly be seen and felt.
Uruguayan architect Marcelo Daglio designed the traditional Spanish colonial structure of Estancia Vik, the magnificent foundation of the retreat, and a traditional Uruguayan barbeque was built to mirror the traditional tin galpons. This clear focus on authenticity throughout the building process is one of the reasons the retreat fits in effortlessly with its stunning backdrop.
What does luxury mean to you?
I have always thought of luxury as meaning the highest quality. We use the phrase ‘esto es un lujo’ (this is luxury) to describe landscapes, happy moments, and beautiful experiences. I don’t think luxury necessarily means material goods anymore.
My philosophy is to always strive to go above and beyond — Vik Retreats have always provided an exceptional experience, but if we can continue to pursue excellence and to welcome guests as if it were their own home, then we will continue to provide them with an unmatched experience. The goal of Vik Retreats is not to sell rooms, but rather provide guests with memories they will cherish for a lifetime.
To you personally, what is so special about this boutique hotel?
The authenticity. Estancia Vik does not just provide the ultimate luxury travel destination, but it provides a culturally authentic retreat for those seeking to experience the real Uruguay. Celebrating its location and highlighting Uruguayan culture in a way that can not be matched, Estancia Vik offers guests an unrivaled entree into the art, culture, and cuisine of Uruguay.
How long do you generally recommend to stay at José Ignacio?
I would recommend vacation guests stay at least a few days. For those traveling from farther distances, it is always ideal to have time to adjust and relax after traveling. Five days to a week is a nice length of stay because it allows enough time to visit José Ignacio and also fully experience everything that our two retreats have to offer.
Is there anything else that is important to mention?
The beauty of José Ignacio and the kindness of its people play a large role in what makes Vik Retreats so special. The relaxing bohemian chic atmosphere, the intimate restaurants, the beach, the water sports, its sunset – they all work together with the Vik properties to create this holistic experience that is truly unique and draws travelers from around the globe.
Our small hotel provides twelve private suites, each with a unique design, integrating original art conceived for the space by one of our selected artists. Every suite is distinct from the others, each providing a different feel but equally spectacular aesthetic.
The suites are almost too unique to compare, but the Kike Badaro Suite has always been a favorite – it is warm, and welcoming, with a particularly relaxed atmosphere. Very few things can compare to taking in the views from its patio and just admiring the idyllic surroundings.
All Suites at Estancia Vik have privileged views to the river or Laguna de Jose Ignacio, Egyptian cotton linens, WiFi, King Size Beds, custom designed personal amenities and state of the art technology.
3 of the Suites can fit two extra beds or baby cots. The other Suites can fit one extra bed or baby cot.
All Master Suites at Estancia Vik have privileged views to the river or Laguna de Jose Ignacio, Egyptian cotton linens, king-size beds, custom designed personal amenities and state of the art technology. The Master Suites are one bedroom suites with fireplace, balcony and ocean view.
The Master Suite Vik is located on the upper level of the East Wing and offers a king-size bed and a fully-equipped bathroom. Living room features a fireplace and iPod dock. Private terrace with river & landscape view. The room is ideal for a couple but can have an extra bed or baby cot as well.
Estancia Vik sits on 4,000 acres in the rolling countryside, where guests can horseback ride, explore the diverse wildlife, mountain bike, hike, canoe, fish, play tennis, or take polo lessons on our private polo field... There is also a 20 metre-long swimming pool, a gym, a spa and a game room.
Through our Experience Concierge program, Estancia Vik also allows vacation guests the chance to explore José Ignacio through the eyes of a native, with insider looks at the town’s hot spots and most insider attractions.
The hotel also has a chapel created by Carlos Musso, which can be used for weddings, christenings and other special events.
Playing tennis on the grass courts is always a treat because it is not something many guests have the opportunity to do elsewhere. I also always recommend Polo because it is particularly unique and one of our most well known activities. The Estancia is home to one of the world’s best private polo fields, something of which we are very proud and enjoy sharing with our guests.
Estancia Vik is located in the rolling countryside of José Ignacio, a relaxed, bohemian chic village in Uruguay. Packed with galleries, trendy restaurants and boutiques, the town is buzzing with energy.
I love that José Ignacio is able to maintain its own distinct atmosphere but at the same time stays authentically Uruguayan. For travelers, it is a destination to where they can retreat and relax to soak in the views and enjoy a change of pace. For locals, it is a celebration of the vibrancy of Uruguayan culture.
The best time to visit is during the high season, mid December to the end of February. The weather is warm, and the town of José Ignacio is bustling. It is the ideal time for vacation guests to partake in the range of activities we offer while also being able to feel the energy emanating from José Ignacio during its high season.
