The views of the vibrant coastline and spectacular sunset leave an impression on everyone who visits.
How would you describe Playa Vik in a nutshell?
Vik Retreats are a collection of incredible properties revolutionizing the way in which travelers experience South America. With art as their focal point, each retreat is truly remarkable and a celebration of José Ignacio, the fishing village where they are located.
How would you describe the architecture of Playa Vik?
Playa Vik’s architecture is awe-inspiring. Carlos Ott, the Uruguayan architect who assisted in executing the vision for the property, helped to create something spectacular. The
What does luxury mean to you?
I have always thought of luxury as meaning the highest quality. We use the phrase ‘esto es un lujo’ (this is luxury) to describe landscapes, happy moments, and beautiful experiences. I don’t think luxury necessarily means material goods anymore.
My philosophy is to always strive to go above and beyond — Vik Retreats have always provided an exceptional experience, but if we can continue to pursue excellence and to welcome guests as if it were their own home, then we will continue to provide them with an unmatched experience. The goal of Vik Retreats is not to sell rooms, but rather provide guests with memories they will cherish for a lifetime.
To you personally, what is so special about Playa Vik?
Playa Vik is absolutely stunning and entirely unique. Its views of the vibrant coastline and spectacular sunset leave an impression on all those who visit. Merging avant-garde design with the natural backdrop of José Ignacio, Playa Vik is striking and one-of-a-kind.
How long do you generally recommend to stay?
I would recommend guests stay at least a few days. For those traveling from farther distances, it is always ideal to have time to adjust and relax after traveling. Five days to a week is a nice length of stay because it allows enough time to visit José Ignacio and also fully experience everything that our two retreats have to offer.
Is there anything else that is important to mention?
The beauty of José Ignacio and the kindness of its people play a large role in what makes Vik Retreats so special. The relaxing bohemian chic atmosphere, the intimate restaurants, the beach, the water sports, its sunset – they all work together with the Vik properties to create this holistic experience that is truly unique and draws travelers from around the globe.
Playa Vik has the central sculpture with four suites, and six casas each with two or three bedrooms. The sculpture is just incredible – it is so unique, and absolutely striking. I have never visited another hotel or retreat that offers anything like it. Choosing a favorite casa is difficult because they are all so unique, but I tend to lean toward Casa Jose Ignacio — its art, design and privacy are perfect for families like mine that have young children.

Valentina Suite is the largest suite located in the ‘Sculpture’ building. It boasts magnificent views from two major exposures to the Playa Mansa and the Southern Atlantic.
Eight enormous photographs by Montserrat Soto of the Northern Atlantic Ocean and the rugged and dramatic coast of Fuerteventura welcome the guests in this suite.
One of the owners’ treasured Uruguayan artists, Martin Verges, has painted a huge mural of faces for this exquisite suite.
Playa Vik and Estancia Vik work in tandem, one of the many exciting features of the properties. Located just 5 miles apart, they are able to provide a beachfront experience alongside the country ranch escape, an aspect our guests really enjoy. Located along the water, Playa Vik allows guests to canoe, kayak, fish, and to enjoy water sports including surfing, kite surfing, water skiing and sailing. Guests of Playa Vik can also use our game room, spa and gym, and for those who desire to take in the countryside, they can hop over to Estancia with ease and enjoy the many activities available there.
I recommend any and all activities involving the beach. Mansa beach is the ideal place to soak up the sun and truly relax while on vacation, but for those looking to stay active I suggest surfing and kite surfing. Enjoying the views from Playa’s pool, which extends from the property’s terrace and overlooks the beach below, is also a necessity. That view cannot be topped.
Playa Vik sits on the Mansa beach in José Ignacio, which is renowned for its flawless beaches, rolling landscapes, and unmatched sunset. Playa Vik faces west with views of the Atlantic Ocean and picturesque coastline and is just 5 miles from Estancia Vik.
I love that José Ignacio is able to maintain its own distinct atmosphere but at the same time stays authentically Uruguayan. For travelers, it is a destination to where they can retreat and relax to soak in the views and enjoy a change of pace. For locals, it is a celebration of the vibrancy of Uruguayan culture.
The best time to visit is during the high season, mid December to the end of February. The weather is warm, and the town is bustling. It is the ideal time for guests to partake in the range of activities we offer while also being able to feel the energy emanating from José Ignacio during its high season.
