Rustic Catskills Retreat
Mountain views, amazing outdoor spaces including a screened-in porch.
The home is set back on a quiet country road. We have respectful neighbors who are a good distance away. There is a small owner's cottage behind the home which is not part of the rental.
How would you describe Rustic Catskills Retreat in a nutshell?
Rustic Catskills Retreat is a beautifully appointed country home with mountain views set in a desirable part of the Catskills, not far from Kingston and Woodstock.
What is the story behind Rustic Catskills Retreat, what was your inspiration to create it?
We fell in love with the Catskills a couple of years ago, so we started looking for a property — somewhere we could use ourselves and rent to others. Originally we were looking on the east side of the Hudson River and had a few places we really liked fall through. Eventually, we decided to explore the other side of the river as we hadn’t spent much time over there and we just loved it! It felt really different and like there was a real buzz in the air in terms of things happening and the outdoorsy vibe.
This property happened to be the last on a list of 6 or 7 that we looked at one day and had just come on the market that morning. We loved it! It was already a great property, with the views and outdoor spaces (the porch really “wowed” us!), but it also felt like it had so much potential. We could see ourselves there and we put in an offer the same day.
During the winter of 2019, we repainted the exterior and furnished the home, getting ready to rent it out. Then in March, Covid hit and instead of bringing lots of people to the area, we decided to rent it out for long-term stays to people who were looking to leave New York City. We had friends of friends stay, then others we connected with through Instagram and did that for the first year before moving to short-term stays.
How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design of Rustic Catskills Retreat?
It’s a spacious modern home, with light and bright spaces that are super cosy and with all of the modern amenities you need.
Rustic Catskills Retreat is unusual in that there is an entrance on every side of the house! But you enter through the back door into the mudroom, which takes you to the centre of the home. It’s all on one floor, with a very open layout.
On the right-hand side of the home from the mudroom is the living-dining space, a screened-in porch and a master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. On the left-hand side is a living space that loops around into a sitting area/sunroom where you can read or play games. There’s also a second bedroom and a guest bathroom — finding two bathrooms in a country home in the Catskills was a real find!
There’s an outdoor fire pit and a screened-in porch (which is where everyone wants to be in the warmer months), as well as a basement with a ping pong table and pool table. Aside from the laundry, we also provide guests with toiletries, such as soaps and shampoos. There’s also high-speed internet, Bluetooth speakers and a 55” TV, as well as a selection of books, games and puzzles for guests to use.
My favourite thing to do in the area is visiting the Ashokan Reservoir, which is just five minutes from the house. It provides New York City with clean tap water and is beautiful throughout the year — it looks different every day. There’s a paved pathway along the perimeter where you can walk or cycle while enjoying the mountain and water views.
If you want to go hiking or just spend a day in the outdoors, I would recommend Minnewaska State Park. We also suggest that guests spend time exploring the nearby towns for great restaurants, shops and cider houses.
Kingston is around 20 minutes drive east from Rustic Catskills Retreat and Woodstock is the same distance to the north. New York City is around two hours away while New York Stewart International Airport is just an hour’s drive.
