An introduction to Casa Antigua

What is the story behind Casa Antigua, what was your inspiration to create it?

Casa Antigua is the jewel in the crown of our Cartagena collection and located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town. It’s a huge property that originally had two patios but has been extended to include three. There’s a grandeur and historic charm about the house, with fine artworks and antiques decorating its spaces.

How would you describe the atmosphere, architecture and interior design of Casa Antigua?

Casa Antigua is decorated with artworks, furnishings and interior features from all over the globe — there’s charm and character everywhere you look. The owners are very well travelled and have incredible taste. Many of the property’s original features have been retained, such as the double-height ceilings, wooden beams and studded entrance door. The light-filled terraces are lushly planted with tropical species while the Arabian-style pond is filled with lily pads.

Casa Antigua rooms & rates

On the ground floor are three patios and a bar set within a tunnel-like feature. There’s a Moroccan-style seating area where you can enjoy a cup of tea in the middle of the day and in the evening, the staff set up candlelit dinners underneath the stars. A large pool dominates the back patio, which is dotted with cushioned loungers and framed by a cascading wall garden.

The bedrooms are well-spaced for a large group and they all feature striking pieces, such as four-poster beds and beautifully designed frames. All have ensuite bathrooms, most with tiled tubs. In addition to two bedrooms on the ground floor, there are four on the first floor and a studio room accessible from the pool. All of the first-floor rooms are set along a verandah and open to the outside while the master bedroom opens up on both sides to offer views across the patios.

Things to do in Bolívar Department & Cartagena

  • Art / Culture
  • Shopping / Markets
  • Boat trips

Cartagena is surrounded by walls that extend into the sea, so there isn’t a beach in the city as such. Most people go to Playa de las Americas, which is around 10 or 15 minutes’ drive away, or they’ll head out to one of the islands by boat. There’s always a lot of artwork in the streets and there are great festivals throughout the year, including an artisan, a literary and a classical music festival.

The location of Casa Antigua

Casa Antigua is located in the heart of Cartagena’s Old Town, with lots of shops and restaurants right on its doorstep. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from Plaza de Bolivar but on a street that is nice and quiet. The area is quite “bougie”, with some nice swimwear shops, plenty of great restaurants and a very famous icecream store. As soon as you step outside, you are in the middle of everything. But once you step inside, it’s like you’ve entered a completely different world of calm.

Cartagena is a melting pot of cultures - there’s a definite Andalucian influence but it also feels like you’re on the set of “Pirates of the Caribbean”. The cuisine appears Spanish but with a Caribbean twist — lots of coconut and plantain.

The climate is hot and steamy, which makes people passionate and fiery. Colombians will always go out of their way to be helpful. They are incredibly welcoming. I like that there’s a real mix of people here, not only from Colombia but from all over the world. The people really make the place.

I particularly love Colombia’s biodiversity, from the Caribbean to the Amazon and the coffee-growing areas. Travelling here is an enriching experience and everything is so stimulating. I always feel like I’m learning so much. As with any destination, you have to be aware of what’s going on around you, particularly on your first visit.
