An introduction to Finca la Selva

What is the story behind Finca la Selva?

Finca la Selva is set on a huge, private estate near Montenegro, with no other neighbours visible. It’s a place to feel in sync with nature. The fruit served at breakfast comes from the surrounding orchard and the honey is from the finca’s hives. Every morning the staff even go out and milk the resident cows by hand.

How would you describe the atmosphere, architecture and interior design of Finca la Selva?

With its sliding doors, bamboo ceilings and simple, stone floors, Finca la Selva feels a bit like a Japanese teahouse. It’s designed in a cabana-style with lots of Asian influences, but it’s still very Colombian. All of the buildings are connected by peaceful walkways and patios that allow you to interact with nature. Cow-hide floor coverings, indigenous textiles and hand-painted ceramics add to the rustic atmosphere.

  • Wildlife / Animals
  • Yoga classes
  • Hiking
  • Horseback riding

On the property, there is a spring-fed swimming pool, a yoga pergola and a badminton net, all of which guests are welcome to use. You can also just go strolling through the orchard and kitchen garden, say “hello” to the dairy cows or ride one of the finca’s horses.

In the surrounding area are plenty of coffee fincas that offer tastings, as well as pretty little villages where you can spend a lazy day eating at the local restaurants and shopping for gifts. The area is popular with cyclists because of the quiet roads and it’s a great place for trout fishing.

There are also some amazing walks to do. The most famous is the Valle de Cocora near Salento, which is renowned for its towering wax palms. To complete the circular loop takes between four and six hours or you can just do a section on horseback. Jose Luis also knows some less-discovered valleys to explore.

The location of Finca la Selva

Finca la Selva is located in the coffee-growing region of Colombia, just outside the town of Montenegro. The area is verdant green and with a wonderfully fresh climate — it’s just breathtaking. This part of Colombia gets quite a bit of rainfall, which is lovely as everything feels so juicy and beautiful.

Finca la Selva is around 40 minutes’ drive from Almeria Airport and transport is provided by Jose Luis, so you don’t need to hire a car. That being said, it can be fun to rent a convertible jeep to drive around and the roads are very quiet.

The closest town is around 10 kilometres away. But if you want to go out to eat, most guests choose to dine at one of the atmospheric country restaurants nearby. Rather than going out for dinner, they are more likely to have lunch out at a local restaurant when they’re exploring. Our in-house cook can prepare incredible meals for guests in the evenings.
