Casa Patio
Incredible historical casa with museum-piece furnishings in the heart of Cartagena’s picturesque Unesco-protected old town.
What is the story behind Casa Patio, what was your inspiration to create it?
Casa Patio is a lovely, light-filled property next to an old trade centre and is an oasis in the middle of Cartagena’s happening Old Town. With five ensuite bedrooms, it’s great for a family or a small group of close friends. At the heart of the property is an Andalucian-style patio with a swimming pool that is bathed in beautiful morning light.
How would you describe the atmosphere, architecture and interior design of Casa Patio?
Casa Patio has been tastefully decorated in an eclectic style, with lots of vintage pieces and antique furnishings, as well as modern touches. There are beautiful artworks throughout the property and bold fabrics made by Colombian artisans. Among the original features are rustic floor tiles, whitewashed walls and antique washstands, as well as the wooden balustraded and beamed galleries on the first floor.
The beds are incredible — you will never sleep as well anywhere else! I love that you can shutter up the rooms and the walls are so thick, making it really quiet, even though you are in the middle of everything.
Aside from the patio with its living and dining space, the ground floor features two bedrooms, both of which have beautifully tiled ensuite bathrooms. There’s also a swimming pool where you can take a dip in the late afternoon while the staff are preparing aperitivos. Beside the pool are cushioned sunbeds while throughout the space is an abundance of greenery and botanical-themed artworks.
Upstairs is the main living room with a workspace, as well as an old balcony overlooking the street. Along the verandah are two more double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, plus the master bedroom, which is huge and with an oversized sunken tub. It has windows on either side looking out over the patio and enjoys lots of light — it’s absolutely gorgeous.

AMENITIES
Cartagena is surrounded by walls that extend into the sea, so there isn’t a beach in the city as such. Most people go to Playa de las Americas, which is around 10 or 15 minutes’ drive away, or they’ll head out to one of the islands by boat. There’s always a lot of artwork in the streets and there are great festivals throughout the year, including an artisan, a literary and a classical music festival.
I usually spend three or four days in Cartagena, exploring the Old Town, then head out to Isla Baru, which is just to the south of the city. It’s the complete opposite and a place for total disconnection. You can have the beach all to yourself and spend your days reading, swinging in a hammock and eating great food. Alternatively, I would recommend making a day trip to Islas del Rosario.
Aside from Cartagena’s Old Town, I would also suggest exploring Getsemene, which is a nearby neighbourhood that has a more authentic atmosphere. It is filled with colourful, colonial houses that are mostly occupied by locals, as well as great salsa bars with live bands.
Casa Patio is located in the heart of Cartagena’s Old Town, with lots of shops and restaurants right on its doorstep. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from Plaza de Bolivar but on a street that is nice and quiet. The area is quite “bougie”, with some nice swimwear shops, plenty of great restaurants and a very famous ice cream store. As soon as you step outside, you are in the middle of everything. But once you step inside, it’s like you’ve entered a completely different world of calm.
Cartagena is a melting pot of cultures — there’s a definite Andalucian influence but it also feels like you’re on the set of “Pirates of the Caribbean”. The cuisine appears Spanish but with a Caribbean twist — lots of coconut and plantain.
The climate is hot and steamy, which makes people passionate and fiery. Colombians will always go out of their way to be helpful. They are incredibly welcoming. I like that there’s a real mix of people here, not only from Colombia but from all over the world. The people really make the place.
I particularly love Colombia’s biodiversity, from the Caribbean to the Amazon and the coffee-growing areas. Travelling here is an enriching experience and everything is so stimulating. I always feel like I’m learning so much. As with any destination, you have to be aware of what’s going on around you, particularly on your first visit.
