An introduction to Casas La Veleta

What was your inspiration to create Casas La Veleta? What is the story behind it?

I’m originally from Germany and studied political science before working as a journalist in the northeast. So I don’t have a background in hospitality, construction or design. But it was always very appealing to me.

I loved to take pictures and travel. When I was travelling, I always loved staying in boutique hotels and experiencing the vibe.

I was doing a long trip of around two years that included Australia, the United States, Cuba and Mexico. I’d already travelled a lot in Central America and Mexico wasn’t a destination I was really excited about. But it felt like somewhere I should visit.

When I came to Tulum, I was really impressed by the beach, the colour of the water and how fine the sand was. The hotel zone felt so romantic, private and exclusive.

After living in northern Germany, I’d always wanted to live somewhere with beautiful weather. And from my childhood, I’d had an interest in tropical plants. In Tulum, I had the opportunity to plant and landscape in a tropical climate.

There are lots of interesting people living in Tulum, including my business partner, who introduced me to the area back in 2017. We started our development company with a small, boutique building. This was followed by two more buildings.

In 2023, we got fully engaged in the project, with the vision to offer bigger houses (they all have three bedrooms) and a high-end, design-driven experience. Beautiful landscaping, unique textiles, lots of privacy — these were priorities.

In Tulum, lots of people have money for the build, but not for the interiors. I think it needs to be aligned if you want to create something unique. Our idea was to control the whole process, from selecting the location and land to the interiors and the finished project.

In total, there are five houses, each of which is different and completely custom-designed. At Casas La Veleta, we design the houses, then sell them and later manage them for the owners.

Please tell us about the atmosphere and interior design. What does it feel like staying there?

When you arrive at Casas La Veleta, there’s the sensation of something completely unexpected. It’s beautiful and you have the idea of being transported to another place. Yes, it’s Mexico. But it could also be a riad in Marrakech, a finca in Ibiza, a country house in Puglia.

We did a lot of trips to Europe for inspiration - there are influences from the Mediterranean and Morocco. At the same time, we are trying to preserve the Mexican design concept.

Casas La Veleta is somewhere to relax after a day of exploration. It’s design-driven and has very luxurious touches, with high-end finishes and technical installations. The houses are very quiet and there’s a lot of privacy, but you are still in the centre of everything.

Casas La Veleta rooms & rates

While there is a communal area, it’s not big enough for a yoga retreat or a wedding ceremony. However, you could have a cocktail together in the evening or set up a long table for dinner.

Things to do in Riviera Maya & Tulum

  • Art / Culture
  • Shopping / Markets
  • Night life
  • Yoga classes
  • Golf
  • Tennis
  • Cycling
  • Scuba diving
  • Boat trips
  • Fishing

La Veleta has a lot of yoga studios and wellness facilities, including a famous holistic centre, Holistika. Nearby is the Jungle Gym, where all the machines are made with natural materials. It’s a great place to come to stay fit and healthy, and eat organic food. Tulum also has a very good restaurant scene and cooking schools.

Close by are several cenotes, which you can reach with a motorbike or car, as well as Tulum National Park. It’s home to beautiful beaches, mangrove forests and the Tulum ruins, as well as a new museum.

The Hotel Zone is where the majority of the hotels, restaurants and beach clubs are. Spending a day at the beach is essential in Tulum! There are different kinds of beach clubs, depending on what you’re after, including party clubs and chilled clubs with relaxed DJ sets.

Within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, there are a few beach clubs that are more about the old Tulum experience. Here you can see canals dug by the Mayans and beautiful lagoons.

Also nearby are several historic sites, such as Coba and Muyil, and the colonial town of Valladolid, which has classic Mexican vibes. Additionally, there are a couple of activity parks where you can get up close to wildlife and go zip-lining. Bacalar also makes a great day trip with its beautiful lagoon.

The location of Casas La Veleta

Casas La Veleta is located in La Veleta, a neighbourhood with a lot of character. It’s not part of Tulum’s beach strip or its main town (which are around 10 minutes’ drive from one another). Originally, it was a small residential area that we found very charming.

Over the years, La Veleta has attracted creative people, shops and restaurants — everything is boutique and within walking distance, while still being close to the beach. We selected the location of Casas La Veleta because it feels very private - it doesn’t have many neighbours and they preserved a lot of trees.

Within five minutes, you can reach (on foot) the main street with shops, restaurants and new boutique experiences opening each month. There are also pharmacies, salons and laundry services, as well as street food, great bakeries and motorbike/ATM/car rentals.

When is the best time to visit Riviera Maya?

If you want to experience Tulum’s biggest festivals and parties, New Year’s and January is the time to visit. From February to April, the weather is fairly consistent and the temperatures are not too crazy.

In the summertime, you might have heard that there can be a lot of sargassum seaweed on the beaches. It tends to be humid and very warm. While it’s less busy, July and August still attract a lot of people due to the summer vacations in Europe and North America.

September/October is low season, with a higher chance of rain and the possibility of hurricanes. Personally, I like November a lot — it’s just before the high season and the weather is normally really nice. December is calm before the holiday season arrives.
