An introduction to Cortijo Andalucía

How would you describe Cortijo Andalucía in a nutshell?

It’s truly a sanctuary. The open spaces and endless views across the olive tree-dotted hills will calm you and set the scene for a deeply relaxing stay. The house itself has been refurbished with a clear focus on its past. You’ll hopefully feel at home right away – just like we do.

What is the story behind Cortijo Andalucia, what was your inspiration to create it?

We came across Cortijo Andalucía while searching for a holiday home in Andalucía during the pandemic and it really was love at first sight (and we’re only talking photos at this point!) The unique style of the house, the surroundings and the pool just felt perfect to us. We weren’t disappointed when we finally managed to travel there. It really is a dream come true. Mind you, we can’t take credit for the creation. That honour goes to the previous owners from Belgium, who have since become friends.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Cortijo Andalucía?

Firstly, let’s talk about the location. You’re really on your own, 860 metres above sea level, with views all the way to the mountain range near the coast. There are almost no neighbours (or, for that matter, lights at night) anywhere in sight. It’s extremely peaceful and quiet. You can just sit there and watch the landscape change colour over the course of the day and experience starlit nights.

The pool sits just steps from the house on an edge, giving you the feeling that you’re swimming towards the hills in the distance. The house itself is special because it feels very authentic and yet has a clean, modern design throughout. Incorporating built-in furniture, the rooms are simple and with a soothing atmosphere. We particularly love the little details: the bedside lamps made from roof tiles and the rings once used to secure stable animals to the ceiling beams.

To you personally, what is so special about Cortijo Andalucia?

It’s the profound sense of peace and calm that overwhelms us every time we arrive. The surrounding nature is breathtaking and to have this gem of a house sitting right there still makes us giddy with joy.

What do you particularly like about this part of Andalucia?

It feels “real.” The area is rural and not overrun by tourists. You’ll be mingling with the locals in Montefrío’s main square and probably see more tractors than cars parked on the road. It’s immensely relaxing and refreshing.

Cortijo Andalucía rooms & rates

You’ll most likely enter the house via our favourite room: the kitchen. It’s spacious, yet cozy, with all of the amenities you’ll need. From here, you can always keep an eye on what’s going on at the pool through the little window behind the sink.

For sun-kissed breakfasts, you can enjoy the little courtyard just to the east of the kitchen. Inside the kitchen is a small table that is great for a quick morning coffee or a little cava as you pack away your groceries in the afternoon.

From here, take two steps and you’re in the main dining room, which also opens to the western patio where a lounge area (including a barbecue pit) awaits for tapas and afternoon sundowners. The alfresco dining table is always the centre of memorable nights under the stars. The interior dining space features a large table that can comfortably seat eight people and a wood burner for cooler nights. We love the crooked ceiling beams in here as well!

From here, you can also access the new gem of the house: a large, modern living room with sky light, comfy leather sofas, a grand piano and a treadmill for some exercise and an ensuite bathroom. Pictures to follow soon!

Come back to dining room and turn left to the staircase leading up to the first floor, where you’ll find one bedroom with two single beds and a small bathroom with a shower just across the hallway. There’s also a second bedroom with a double bed and a larger bathroom with a bathtub and shower just beyond.

Head back downstairs and past the staircase to the small living room with its cozy fireplace that quickly warms up the room. Venture beyond the living room and you’ll find another bedroom with two single beds that connects to a third bathroom, plus the final bedroom with a double bed (which is also accessible from the outside).

Things to do in Andalucia & Montefrío

  • Hiking
  • Cycling

Please come to Cortijo Andalucía to enjoy the property itself, swim in the pool and relax around the gardens or take hikes in the hills behind. Beaches around La Herradura and Nerja on the Costa Tropical are perfect for day trips and about 1.5 hours away by car.

Montefrío is worth a visit if only to take a few selfies in front of the town’s skyline. Granada is an hour away, but you should plan a visit – watching the sunset over the city from the Mirador San Miguel is stunning. As we’re surrounded by nature, we would recommend enjoying endless walks through the olive groves to experience the complete silence and, at night, to witness an explosion of stars in the sky.

The location of Cortijo Andalucía

If you’re looking for easy access to beaches and entertainment, Cortijo Andalucía’s not the place for you. Its magical location comes with a price: From the main road, there’s a cul-de-sac dirt track that slowly winds itself towards the house, which sits at the very end. A car will be essential for you to get here and to get around during your stay. The house is most enjoyable for those looking to unwind and spend time just soaking up the atmosphere, keeping trips during your stay to a minimum.

The closest town is Montefrío, which was selected by National Geographic Magazine as having one of the world’s 10 most beautiful views. It truly is a stunning sight, with its white houses surrounding a hill that’s crowned with a church and the remains of a Moorish fort. Here you will find several supermarkets, as well as specialty shops selling meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, plus other local produce such as cheese and olive oil. There are also some restaurants but opening times are quite erratic, so it’s best to check beforehand. Not to miss is the Olive Museum, which celebrates the region’s main produce.

From the house, you can go hiking through the surrounding olive groves. A short drive away you’ll find the Arroyo de los Molinos natural springs and waterfalls, which are ideal for a dip on hot days.

Cortijo Andalucía is about one hour from Granada and 1.5 hours from Málaga Airport and the beaches of the Costa Tropical – a perfect destination for relaxed day trips. Córdoba and Sevilla (2 and 2.5 hours respectively) are a bit further, but also within reach for a day’s visit.

When is the best time to visit Andalucia?

We’re opening the house for guests between May and October. While nights can be chilly in spring and fall, the summer months can get quite hot, even though we’re at a high altitude. All bedrooms have air conditioning, ensuring your comfort even during the hottest of nights. Closing the window blinds during the day and opening them in the evening will keep temperatures inside the house at a comfortable level and help to protect the environment by conserving energy.
