How would you describe Hotel Aire de Bardenas in a nutshell?

Aire de Bardena is a luxury design hotel in Spain’s Navarra region. Within the hotel’s rooms and bubbles, guests find themselves immersed into the surrounding, tranquil landscapes of Bardenas National Park. The hotel was designed by Barcelona-based architects Emiliano López and Mónica Rivera. While some refer to Aire de Bardenas as a moon base, this architectural jewel is truly outstanding, because of its setting into such an unusual environment, its luxury facilities, as well as the high quality of self-produced food that is served at the restaurant.

How would you describe the architecture and interior design?

Aire de Bardenas is a very modern hotel. Yet, it is not ‘modern’ as in cold or bland. The environment and ambience here is very warm and comfortable, even though the design is very basic. We are mixing playful industrial design with minimalist, but extremely comfortable, décor. Even when you are inside, you feel as though you are outside because of all the windows, and that’s the magic of the place.

At the hotel guests will experience living in a place that has its own personality. It’s a safe environment, with nice temperatures and the luxury of always having someone there to assist with any questions or challenges. It truly is a special experience as everyone can connect to the site and enjoy himself or herself in such a calm environment. Even better, our rooms are designed to give a sense of being immersed in the natural world, which is something incredibly rare nowadays.

Aire de Bardenas is a basic but luxurious hotel with 22 rooms and 10 bubbles. Our rooms are categorized as double rooms, cubes, and suites, some have stunning views of the wheat fields, while others open up to a private patio. The double rooms are in the main building of the hotel, next to the reception area and the restaurant. Three of those have exterior bathtubs on a private patio and a private fruit tree.

The suites are bigger than the double rooms and have a living room. The suites with views are outside and those with outside bathtubs are inside the main building. Each cube is an independent building, some with a private patio, bathtub and tree, while others are set into the surrounding wheat fields. The 10 bubbles are different from the rest of the hotel. They are transparent, inflatable structures that are made of aluminum and reinforced plastic. Inside it feels as if there’s no ceiling overhead, with a clear view of the sky and the stars.

There is a restaurant at Aire de Bardenas that offers excellent local food. Breakfast at the hotel includes orange juice, coffee, eggs, fruits and vegetables from our own garden, cookies and biscocho, a local delicacy. The rooms are equipped with TVs, Wi-Fi and air conditioning. There are bicycles that our guests can rent, we have a swimming pool on-site and offer spa treatments. Basically, whatever requests or wishes our guests might have, we will do our best to fulfill them. And of course we are always available to give recommendations on any trips away from the hotel.

An absolute highlight that I can recommend is taking a Segway trip into Europe’s largest desert, the Bardenas. It’s a fun experience for people of all ages. Families should also consider going on a backpacking-hike into the desert to see the animals. That is something my four children enjoy doing every summer. There are several nice wineries and olive groves in the surrounding areas, which can be visited; they even offer tours and wine and olive oil tastings. Aire de Bardenas is extremely close to Tudela, an old city with lots of monuments and good restaurants. Taking a trip to Tudela is something we like to recommend to our guests, as there they can get a sense of authentic local culture. It’s wonderful to sit on one of the terraces, eat some tapas and have a drink, while watching the people in the streets pass by.

The location of Hotel Aire de Bardenas

Aire de Bardenas is located in the dramatic landscape of Bardenas Reales National Park, which is in the Navarra region in northern Spain. This is a very interesting location, in the middle of the desert and near the river Ebro, which is the biggest river in Spain. The combination of the two creates the opportunity to have a garden right next to the wind-sculpted hills of the desert. Aire de Bardenas is set into this location in a way that one side of the hotel looks towards the river and the other towards the desert.

Tudela is only 4 kilometers away and has approximately 120,000 people, including all the smaller villages surrounding it. Pamplona and Zaragoza are both about one hour from the hotel and within two hours guests could be in Bilbao or Biarritz, in the south of France. Even Barcelona and Madrid are only a 3-hour drive away.

When is the best time to visit Navarra?

The hotel is open all year round. However, it is important to consider that we are located in a desert and that it can get very hot during summer and cold during winter months. My favorite times to be here are during the spring or fall, such as March, April and May, as well as October and November. During those times the weather is perfect and you can observe the changing of the scenery.

The average length that guests stay at Aire de Bardenas is probably 2 days. We do, however, recommend at least 3 or 4 days if guests want to explore more of the surrounding area. Most of our guests are people who are looking for a design hotel and the different experience we offer. Therefore, they mostly stay at the hotel, hang out in their rooms, on the terraces, in the garden or at the swimming pool. Once they’ve discovered everything about the hotel, they then venture out to do some activities.
