An introduction to Baumhaus

How would you describe Baumhaus in a nutshell?

Baumhaus is housed in a 19th century bourgeois residence, right in the centre of Porto. It is true to the original features of the building while maximizing the comfort of the guests. Every detail, material, colour, and light used in the design aims to create cosiness, privacy and comfort.

What is the story behind Baumhaus, what was your inspiration to create it?

Baumhaus is a family-owned business. It was made to welcome family and friends, like if it was a personal guesthouse. As an inspiration, we thought of our own ideal city shelter – full of good design, interesting books, warm corners, nature and art, hidden in the heart of the city. Although providing the services of a hotel, we want to create the feeling of your very own home. This may be the reason why many of our guests keep coming back year after year, each time for a longer period.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Baumhaus?

When you enter the house, you feel the 19th century atmosphere of the city's typical architecture: the local granite, sculpted and maintained over decades, along with the ceiling stuccos and solid woods – the smell and sense of the materials that have crossed the centuries to host you today. If you watch carefully, the secret garden will appear. It’s perfectly aligned with the house. Right at the focal point, you’ll see our huge Lebanon Cedar, unexpectedly standing at the end of the long backyard.

All the apartments have been designed and furnished with care, enhancing all the layers that history left behind. Almost all the functional furniture is built-in in, allowing the freestanding pieces – like chairs and sofas – to stand out. The spaces are very generous, so you can spread your stuff and relax in total privacy. If you need to or if you travel with kids, you’ll find enough space to accommodate all your needs.

To you personally, what is so special about Baumhaus?

Baumhaus is a meeting point of history, design, art and nature. It is managed with care, like a family house, with all its characteristic features: materials and furniture are authentic, change over time, but are always kind to your senses and make you feel safe and warm.

Whether you stay a couple of days or a couple of months, you’ll feel surprised every day with some detail you didn’t notice before: the way the light falls down over a picture on the wall, a new book on the shelf or some fresh herbs in the kitchen.

What’s your policy on children?

Children are very welcome at all ages! We provide a lot of stuff a child may require, like a baby bathtub, high chairs, baby beds, a toilet-step, toys and so on, so you can travel light with your kids. The apartments have lots of space for playing and our garden will delight their senses. If you’re traveling with kids, please let us know their ages in advance, so we can set everything up properly.

Baumhaus rooms & rates

Once you enter the house, you’ll notice the generous corridor and staircase to welcome and guide you to your own private space.

The ground floor has a 4-meter high ceiling, so the apartments here have a mezzanine to hold the main bed. The windows are almost 4-meters high too and the views of the garden are just perfect.

On the first floor, you’ll find the noblest floor of the bourgeois house, with the most amazing stucco ceiling and the charming historic details, always combined with the best contemporary design pieces, so you won’t get bored.

The second floor has a studio with a big balcony facing the street and a very large one-bedroom apartment facing the garden.

On the third floor, you’ll find our smallest studio and our amazing rooftop shelter with a sunny terrace overlooking the city. Last but not least, in the basement, you’ll find a bright studio with a granite terrace with direct access to the garden, which is full of sun and very well suited for kids.

The backyard of Baumhaus shelters our garden with a unique centenary cedar tree, giving origin to our name and logo. This is not only the perfect place for rest and recreation, but it is also where we grow fruit trees and aromatic herbs for herbal tea and culinary uses for our guests. Here, we can host intimate events, like small weddings or other family gatherings, as well as corporate meetings and performing acts.

As you’ll spend most of the time here sleeping, we shouldn’t forget to mention our top-quality beds, pillows (you can choose 3 different heights), and finest cotton bedsheets, allowing you a first-class sleeping experience.

The apartments are equipped with cable TV, Wi-Fi, and a heating system. Some apartments also have air-conditioning, which is not usually necessary, providing that our summer is very mild, due to the proximity to the ocean.

The kitchens of the apartments are fully equipped, including a ceramic hob, fridge with freezer, oven, microwave, coffee machine, toaster, hand blender and all the other accessories you may need during your stay. Your kitchen will also be supplied with complimentary coffee, tea and mineral water, as well as some fruit and seasonal herbs that grow in our garden.

Since the Baumhaus is a 19th century building and is considered of heritage interest, we focused on preserving its original charm by just applying minimal interventions in its characteristic structure. For this reason, we decided not to implement an elevator, which would affect and alter the interior appearance as well as the useful space of the Baumhaus.

Things to do in Porto

  • Art / Culture
  • Shopping / Markets
  • Night life
  • Wine tastings
  • Cooking classes
  • Massages / Treatments
  • Yoga classes

We can organise yoga sessions in our garden with a certified Yoga instructor, as well as healthy-food workshops and private cooking sessions in the apartments. Our garden is also great for small events. There is a barbecue with a wood oven and an outdoor shower. On request, we can also book massages and other aesthetical treatments, as well as babysitting and individual car trips.

The closest beach is only 5 kms away from Baumhaus, in the very charming area of “Foz do Douro”, where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Here you’ll find a bunch of stylish shops and restaurants. On the way to the beach, you’ll find the most amazing Contemporary Art Museum, on a building designed by one of the local architects that won a Pritzker Prize, Álvaro Siza Vieira.

A few highlights we would recommend:

  • ‚Casa da Música’ with its bold architecture and world-class musical performances (Grigory Sokolov comes every year!).
  • ‚Jardim das Oliveiras’ in Clérigos with a modern and laid-back bar on a roof-garden among the city’s main monuments.
  • ‚Jardins do Palácio de Cristal’, a very quiet park with stunning views to the river and many cultural events.

The location of Baumhaus

Baumhaus is located right between the new and the old parts of Porto, allowing you to visit both. The metro station is a 2-minute walk away, providing direct connection to the airport and the train stations.

The ‚Casa da Música’ OMA/Rem Koolhaas designed building, the main music hall of northern Portugal, is within a 10-minute walk, as well as the hip arts district of Miguel Bombarda.

If you want to go to the beach, with its surf schools and bars, you can get there with a short bus or metro ride. A 20 minute-walk will get you downtown, where all the historical hotspots are.

This part of Porto, Boavista, is still a residential area, full of traditional old-fashioned shops and cafés, not being transfigured by mass tourism. Here we feel like we actually live in a city full of contrasts and authenticity. In our street, you can find a hospital, a pharmacy, a school, lots of cafés and small restaurants. This location is ideal if you want to walk the city as locals do.

When is the best time to visit Porto?

Porto is a versatile city. It has something to offer any time of the year. Autumn is still nice and warm and not so packed with tourists. It is the best time to visit museums or to take a look at the amazing viewpoints of the city. This is also the time to experience the harvest season of port wine producers in the Douro Valley, which is only a daytrip away from Porto.

In the springtime, when temperatures are getting warmer, it’s a great time to enjoy a boat ride on the river. During summer, there are a lot of events going on in Porto such as concerts, music festivals, open air cinema screenings and so on. And you can visit many beaches right within the city or just outside its borders. Also, the most important festivity of Porto – the celebration of St. John’s festival – takes place on June 23rd and attracts thousands of both locals and tourists for the shortest night of the year.

In winter, the weather can be quite temperamental in the sense that it can be sunny one day and cloudy or rainy the following one, but the temperature never drops too much. Therefore, this is the best time for indoor activities, like a glass of Port accompanied by a guided tour of centuries-old Port wine cellars, or a quiet meal by the fire in a cosy restaurant.
