How would you describe Villa do Mar in a nutshell?
Villa do Mar is a multi-level villa designed for both effortless entertaining and refined private living. The ground floor is conceived as an open-plan social space where the living room, dining area and kitchen flow seamlessly together — ideal for long dinners and relaxed gatherings. A dedicated wine bar, books, board games and a smart TV add to the atmosphere, while practical elements such as a powder room and a laundry and bike storage area are discreetly integrated.
The first floor focuses on comfort and functionality, offering a quiet office, a comfortable bedroom with a shared bathroom, and a particularly cozy waterfront suite with a walk-in closet and private en-suite bathroom.
The second floor is reserved for the master retreat. This serene suite features exercise equipment and yoga mats and opens directly onto a private patio — perfect for sunset views over the water. A tranquil reading nook completes the experience.
In essence, Villa do Mar balances elegant shared spaces with high-end private comfort across three levels, all set against a striking waterfront backdrop.
What is the story behind Villa do Mar, and what was your inspiration to create it?
Before the river mouth was tamed, Villa do Mar formed part of the historic Casa dos Pilotos, where river pilots once lived and worked, guiding ships safely through the challenging entrance of the Douro River.
As maritime needs evolved, the Pilots House was relocated, leaving behind the lighthouse and chapel, which today serves as a Lifeguard Station. When the original complex was dismantled, Villa do Mar lost its original function—until an investor recognized its potential beyond the dated façade.
With a vision of blending history and modern living, a talented architect was commissioned to transform the building into a contemporary yet character-filled home. Today, Villa do Mar stands as a luxurious retreat with sweeping views of both river and sea, located in one of Porto’s most prestigious residential areas.
