Baumhaus
Housed in a 19th century heritage building in Porto, Baumhaus are serviced apartment rentals that celebrate the heritage of the building and contemporary design.
Flattered is an attempt to create something cozy and warm, different from the hotel chains. A place where people can feel at home, and experience cool design.
Flattered
You can see the beach from the sea-view apartments, as it's less than 100 meters away.
Even if it's just a short visit, it is the perfect place to combine a city trip with beach vacation.
Start your day in Porto with a large breakfast delivered to your door each morning (upon request).
The apartments are almost too well equipped for just a short stay.
The city centre is 20 mins by tram, but some of the best restaurants and the beach are only a few steps away.
How would you describe Flattered in a nutshell?
Flattered to be in Porto are five luxury apartment rentals in Porto, Portugal. Architects Jose Carlos Cruz completely reinvented the historic townhouse into apartments with multipurpose spaces, minimal style, and, best of all, beautiful sea views. It's an attempt to create something outside of the range of hotel chains, rather something cozy and warm. A place where people can feel at home while getting up close with the artwork of local designers and artists.
And you also show artists’ work in each apartment?
In each apartment there are three, four or even five pieces by different artists. A friend of ours is a graffiti artist and he prepared a piece for us and told us about another artist, and it kind of started from there.
The idea is to have these pieces for a period of time and then rotate, so different artists can exhibit their pieces. And they are all for sale. We provide a catalog for people to look at. I think people enjoy this new way of acquiring art, living with it for a while and maybe deciding to buy it.
One of the ideas behind the project was flexibility to accept more than two people in each apartment. Originally the apartments were all open spaces. They were loft-like apartments. The idea was to offer an extra bed without intruding into the space. We eventually settled on wooden boxes that are a little higher than the floor, with a drawer bed that is concealed underneath and can be pulled out.
Otherwise there are furniture items from vintage stores, pieces of classic design, as well as new pieces. There’s a bit of everything. It’s an eclectic mixture.

I’m from Lisbon. I was born there and raised there, but I fell in love with Porto. The highlight of Porto for me is the city park. It’s a big park that starts in what used to be an old farm and stretches all the way to the seafront. You can walk to the beach from there. It’s beautiful.
It’s very easy to get around the city. The bus stations are all right next door to the apartments. There’s a historical tram that still operates too. It’s a very beautiful way to see the river going right along the river to the center of the old town. It takes around 25 mins or so to get there. The old town of Porto is by the river. It’s a bit inward from the sea. The city kept growing and one of the last neighborhoods that was absorbed by the city was ours. It’s right by the ocean.
From the river to the rest of the seafront, there are several different little beaches that are useable and very popular in the summer. We have one right in front of our apartments with a very nice stretch of sand.
In the old days, our area was where the rich families had their summer houses. It’s probably Porto’s most expensive neighborhood with some of the best-known restaurants in Porto.
There’s a Medieval portion of Porto where you can’t even pass with a car. Yet there are contemporary villas nearby. It’s a mixture of really traditional, simple people and sophistication. It’s interesting.
It’s generally sunny from March, April all the way through to October. July and August have good weather, but they are the high season with a lot of tourists, so that’s something to keep in mind.
Last year and the year before that we still had people on the beach in October. Even in November, I recall seeing people there. But, of course, the winter months are colder, so it’s nicer to walk around at other times of the year.
