An introduction to Casa Melides

How would you describe Casa Melides in a nutshell?

Nestled in a secluded and private location, Casa Melides is a characterful modern home surrounded by nature. It’s a place to enjoy good times with friends and family, to revitalise and to feel the inner quietness while letting go of all worries.

What is the story behind Casa Melides, what was your inspiration to create it?

The project was designed by my mother, an architect, with the intention of having her own refuge away from the city. It took her 10 years to find the perfect spot, plunged into silence within a green landscape. Casa Melides was designed as a place for inspiration, painting and studying, but also as a space to gather people in creative conversations.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Casa Melides?

The interior design has been carefully curated with paintings and artworks by both Portuguese and international artists. It’s a minimal and comfortable atmosphere, where the light, space proportions and authenticity of the materials are the real protagonists.

To you personally, what is so special about Casa Melides?

It’s a place that allows me to revitalise and get in touch with my inner quietness, as well as admire the simplicity of nature and put life into perspective. Also, it is the final project completed by my mother (she has Alzheimers and no longer works), and the only one where she and I have our talents expressed together.

The location of Casa Melides

Casa Melides is secluded in a wooded area just an eight minutes’ drive from the town of Melides. Here, the atmosphere is quiet and friendly, and there is a local market where farmers and fishermen sell fresh fish, fruit and vegetables.

The closest beach at Aberta-a-Nova (an eight minutes’ drive) extends for almost 60 kilometres. Comporta is 23 kilometres away and Troia (with its casino) is 42 kilometres from the property.

What I like about this part of the Alentejo is the relaxed pace, the authenticity of people and the great food/wonderful restaurants. The natural landscapes here are beautiful and the beaches are unspoiled. Also, Melides has become a place where people from different parts of the world come to live, organising home dinners, cultural gatherings and yoga events.

When is the best time to visit Alentejo?

Summer is the hot season and when all of the buzz happens with exclusive beach parties, local markets and events. In autumn, the weather remains warm but the buzz slows down. There’s no more waiting in restaurants and you can enjoy the entire beach to yourself. The colours of the countryside start to change and it’s the perfect time for walking in nature, horse riding, bike riding and playing golf.

Winter is a season to enjoy the quietness and the winter sun. While it’s cold outside, it’s warm inside beside the fireplace. It’s an ideal time for beach walks, wine tasting in Herdade da Comporta, reading and being in good company, as well as remote working and enjoying the silence and nature.

Spring is the season of all colours. The flowers start to bloom, the birds arrive and the weather is warm enough to go for a swim and barbecue outside. It’s the perfect time to do yoga classes or visit Southwest Alentejo Natural Park, as well as go on a boat trip from Comporta to Alcacer do Sal.
