A gravel path leads directly down to the sea, while a supermarket, bakery, and fish restaurant are all within a few minutes' walk.
The main house features underfloor heating, making it equally well suited for off-season escapes and winter stays.

The swimming pool is shared between the two houses, which may be occupied by separate parties at the same time.

An introduction to Casas Por do Sol

What inspired you to buy a property in Portugal and turn it into a place for guests?

It started in a slightly unexpected way. The mother of my ex-wife lived in Nicaragua, and because of the political situation we wanted to bring her closer to us.

More broadly, we had many friends who had already bought properties in Portugal and kept telling us: Go. It’s beautiful — great food, great weather, wonderful people. At first, we even imagined creating a small retreat, almost like a mini boutique hotel. But life changes, plans shift, and in the end I got divorced, took over the project, and completed the construction myself.

What remained constant was the intention: to create a beautiful holiday home — a place to escape to, slow down, and enjoy Portugal: the food, the light, the ocean, and that very particular ease you feel here.

And how did you end up choosing this specific location near Ericeira?

Honestly: by accident. We took a wrong turn — a navigation accident — and suddenly found ourselves driving along the coast in beautiful weather, with flowers everywhere. The atmosphere was so striking that it immediately stayed with us.

Once you’ve been here, you don’t really want to leave. It has this special balance: it’s calm and grounding, but at the same time, you feel the power of the ocean. That contrast fascinated me, and I completely fell in love with the area.

It was an untouched plot of land in a beautiful landscape — the last piece before nature opens up, with only a few houses behind. In front, you have vineyards and open views, and a walk down toward the ocean. So we built everything from scratch.

Did you work with an architect? And what was your vision for the design?

Yes, we worked with an architect — but the core vision came from us: what we wanted to build, how it should feel, and how it should sit in the landscape. The architect supported us as a technical partner: translating the concept into drawings, planning, and execution.

From the beginning, we knew we wanted separation and space — not one large building, but two distinct units. Initially, the idea for the second house was a creative studio. But fairly early on, we realised: if it’s this special here, you want to share it — to “duplicate” the experience in a way. So we created two independent houses: the larger L-shaped main house, and a smaller studio-style garden house.

To you personally, what makes this place so special?

First and foremost: the combination of privacy and convenience. You have peace, nature, and ocean views — but you’re not isolated. You can choose complete quiet, or you can be at a restaurant easily.

There’s also a gravel path that lets you walk down to the ocean for a swim. In fact, you don’t really need a car once you’re here: you can walk up to the supermarket and bakery, and walk down to the sea. That’s rare — this feeling of being tucked away, yet still connected.

And I also love that it works year-round. The main house has underfloor heating, so it’s genuinely comfortable in winter too. It’s not just a summer stay — each season has its own charm, and even January or February can be wonderful. It’s a place you can escape to outside of the crowded high season.

Casas Por do Sol rooms & rates

The plot is slightly hilly — it isn’t flat — so we designed the property in layers, like gentle plateaus. The main house sits higher up, at the back of the plot, where it has a little garden and a sense of privacy. Then you move down to the pool area, which becomes its own space. And then, a few steps down again, you reach the garden house.

The key idea was that neither unit blocks the other’s ocean view. Each house has its own sense of “being its own world” — separate, but still part of one cohesive place.

The main house is designed to be very open and filled with light — you live with the sun throughout the day, and the terrace is made for aperitivo at sunset with ocean views.

Inside, the layout is simple and calm: one bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, plus a separate guest toilet. The front of the house is the open living area — kitchen counter, dining table, sofa, and fireplace — all oriented toward the ocean with full glazing.

What I love is the sense of “long views” through the house: it feels airy and spacious, but it still has cosy corners, so it never feels like one big empty space.

The house is ideal for two people. It can also work for two people with a baby or a small child — the sofa can be converted into a sleeping sofa if needed. But the best experience is really as a couple’s escape: generous space, no compromises.

The garden house is also designed for two. It’s more like a studio-style suite: one big open room with a small kitchen, sleeping area, sofa corner and dining table — hotel-like in its openness, but still warm and relaxed.

At the back you’ll find a separate toilet and a separate shower area. The bathroom is quite spacious and has a skylight, which makes it feel bright and connected to nature.

There’s also a fun “holiday” side to the house: an outdoor cinema setup (projector + screen) for summer evenings, a barbecue, and garden games. There’s one game I can’t name properly in English yet (it’s not ping pong / not tennis / not pickleball) — I’ll confirm the exact name and send it to you so you can include it correctly.

There is also a pool, which is shared between the two houses and sits in the middle of the property. It’s a proper swimming pool — around 12 metres long — and it’s deep throughout, so it’s made for swimming lengths rather than standing around. It has a darker lining, so it warms up relatively easily in summer. In winter, it becomes more of a “cold plunge”… which some people seem to love.

The surrounding terrace is spacious, so guests don’t have to sit close to each other — there’s plenty of room, plus additional spots to hang out on the way down toward the garden house.

The location of Casas Por do Sol

We’re just outside Ericeira, about 10–12 minutes by car. Lisbon airport is typically around 35–45 minutes, depending on traffic, and the connection is easy — mainly highway, no bumpy roads. You arrive comfortably.

Beaches are everywhere along this coast. The nearest beach is about 2 minutes by car, and around 15 minutes on foot if you walk down. I love the beach down below the house — it’s a little more protected, especially at low tide, with rocks and often fishermen nearby. It’s beautiful and quiet to watch.

And I also love São Lourenço, about 5–7 minutes away. It’s a long sandy beach, not too crowded, with a beach bar — and there’s a spot where you can climb a little up a hill and find a perfect place for a romantic sunset picnic. It’s very simple, very sweet — and the views are gorgeous.

For daily essentials, there’s a very good supermarket and bakery just a few minutes’ walk up the street (roughly 3–5 minutes). They open early and stay open into the evening, which is incredibly convenient. There’s also a well-known fish restaurant right next to it — also within a few minutes on foot — plus a few small practical shops along the main road.

Ericeira itself keeps growing in a great way: you can do classic Portuguese restaurants, fine dining, or a great coffee scene — flat whites, oat milk, even a “kids cappuccino.” It’s a nice mix.

If you want more energy, Lisbon is close enough for a day trip (around 40–45 minutes, depending on where you go), and there are buses too. So you can combine coast and countryside calm with city life whenever you feel like it.

When is the best time to visit Greater Lisbon?

I’m a big fan of the off-season. Summer is wonderful, of course, but it’s also busier. Late September and early October are perfect: it still feels like summer, but calmer.

And winter is surprisingly beautiful too. The house is comfortable, the light changes, the surroundings feel different — and you can truly escape outside the classic holiday periods. Honestly, the best time is… all year. Ideally, I’d be here all year myself.
