Casa Sintra
Casa Sintra is an architect-designed villa surrounded by pine trees located only a few minutes from the beautiful beaches and near the UNESCO-listed Portuguese town of Sintra.
The villa is the combination of two of my passions, art and wine.
Wine and Art Villa
The fusion between architecture, design, art and wine!
How would you describe the villa in a nutshell?
The villa is the perfect fusion between art and wine, set in a beautiful viticultural landscape and with an incredible atmosphere that can only be felt and explained right here. Everyone returns and that explains almost everything!
What is the story behind the villa, what was your inspiration to create it?
We were inspired by our love for wine and all the viticultural landscapes around the world. There was an opportunity to establish a unique, boutique wine project close to Lisbon and we decided this could be our starting point in a longer adventure. Our dream is to use the villa to leverage other properties in the main Portuguese wine regions.
How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of the villa?
At the villa, you’ll experience a modern art gallery atmosphere that can be enjoyed by everyone. It occupies a very old winery that has been converted into a residential dwelling that exudes comfort and refinement. When you first step inside and throughout your stay, there will always be new, small details that you will fall in love with.
To you personally, what is so special about the villa?
Throughout our life, we dreamt of many things, some of which were very simple, such as a holiday in a special place, and others more extravagant, like a car or a house.
The villa is an expression of my dream house. It’s old yet modern, highly comfortable and refined, as well as being artistic and full of “natural paintings” that you can observe through the giant windows. They are like living artworks that reflect the natural light throughout the day and follow the seasons through the cycle of the vineyards.
It’s my two passions for life — art and wine — combined in one house!
What do you particularly like about this part of Portugal?
The villa is located in the west of Portugal in an area that is only now being discovered by tourists. As with the rest of the country, it’s full of historical places, wonderful beaches and lots of golf courses, as well as great food and even better wines! It’s a huge surprise for those who dare to venture away from Porto and Lisbon and set off on an adventure through this unique country.
I came here to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and discovered a place where the quality of life is enormous. This is a result of its close proximity to several small towns and the Portuguese capital while still being in the countryside.
The villa is a 300 sqm house with two main buildings connected by an underground tunnel. One of the buildings has the living room, dining room and kitchen. The second building has three beautiful, modern and comfortable rooms and an infinity swimming pool.
Outside, around the house, you can find beautiful gardens and a whole wine estate property with 50.000 sqm full of beautiful vineyards allowing you to walk around them in complete harmony with nature!
You enter the house through the living room, a huge hall that comprises two distinct spaces — one linked to leisure and the other to meals. It is impossible to enter the villa and not have a positive first impression. Each piece of furniture and each piece of art combines the past, present and future. Some vestiges of the past, such as the lagar, the press and the wine deposits, leave many people speechless.
On the right is the modern kitchen, which is fully equipped and with a breathtaking view across the surrounding vineyards and countryside. On the left is a modern service bathroom inside a centuries-old concrete wine deposit. It’s details like these that cannot be forgotten by visitors.
Down a set of stairs and across a long underground tunnel leads guests to the three bedrooms. Once again, they are completely covered in concrete, creating the feeling of sleeping inside a wine deposit. That being said, you have all the expected comforts of high-end accommodation, including private bathrooms. The bedrooms combine modernity with art and some very old furnishings.
Above the bedrooms, an infinity swimming pool awaits and overlooks the estate's several hectares of vineyards. It offers total privacy and tranquility, making it one of the best places at the villa to rest, read a book or enjoy a glass of wine.
The house is air-conditioned throughout and can be regulated according to your desires. There is a TV with a cable connection and a surround sound system, as well as Wi-Fi. In the kitchen, you’ll find all the facilities and amenities to cook your own meals and the bedrooms have high-quality hygiene and beauty products.
The pool is 25 square metres and isn’t heated because it is always around 17ºC.
On request, we can take care of almost anything guests need or desire. Our main purpose at the villa is to make all of your dreams come true. In addition to private transfers from Lisbon Airport and car rentals, we can assist with transportation from any point around Portugal.
We can also take care of guests’ meals, whether they want a traditional Portuguese buffet or fine-dining meals cooked in-house by private chefs. We also have a large range of enotourism programs for guests to choose from that combine wine, food, heritage, nature and sports.
At the villa, we are ready to assist guests in finding the right partners to do almost anything they feel like. We have several different enotourism programs that combine wine, food, history, nature, hiking and cycling, so these are good starting points. After making a reservation, guests can request any of these programs.
We also have partnerships with horseriding schools, surfing and water sports operators on the nearby coast. In addition, guests can join one of our Portuguese cooking classes at the villa, which includes the preparation of meals and wine pairing.
My three highlights?
First, I would recommend a visit to Aldeia Galega, a small wine village within walking distance of the villa (one kilometre). It was once the head of the municipality, with a royal charter from 1305. Among its medieval houses and residential streets, you will find two very beautiful squares watched over by historic churches. Other curious elements include a Manueline pillory and a lovely, tiled fountain.
Around 13 kilometres away is the historic village of Alenquer, which features several museums, convents and old castle walls. Here, you can enjoy a meal at a local restaurant and taste the best of our gastronomy and wines.
Last but not least, I would recommend visiting Montejunto Mountain, which is around 10 kilometres from the villa. Rising to 666 metres, its natural surroundings are protected and home to around 400 species of plants and more than 75 species of birds. It’s the perfect destination for a walk and a cup of Portuguese coffee in one of the mountain shelters.
The villa is located in the heart of the Alenquer municipality and amidst the rural surrounds of the Lisbon Wine Region. More than 30 wine estates can be found nearby, so the landscape is dominated by vineyards that transform throughout the year. All of our neighbours are wineries and vineyards, so it’s the perfect place for resting, hiking and cycling.
The villa is 13 kilometres from the beautiful Portuguese village of Alenquer where you’ll find the remains of a castle, historic monuments and several museums. It’s perfect for a one-day visit.
Lisbon and Humberto Delgado International Airport are around 45 minutes away, so it’s a short and fast drive to the Portuguese capital. We are about 25 minutes by car to the Atlantic beaches of Portugal, including the family-friendly surf beaches of Santa Cruz.
There aren’t any restaurants within walking distance because the villa is set deep within the vineyards. But we have bicycles available, which allow guests to go to several restaurants around two kilometres from the house. Alternatively, we can arrange to have a car available for those transfers. Nearby are three restaurants serving local regional food: Adega Vila Verde, Churrasco da Glorinha and Sabores do Paço.
It depends on the purpose of your visit. If you want to rest, then any time of the year is perfect because the villa gives you all the privacy and serenity you need. Time runs slowly at our wine estate!
If you enjoy the experience of a working winery, then I would say August and September are the perfect months to visit because there is always something happening in the vineyards and in the winery. Our guests are invited to join us and help us to make the best out of our grapes!
I love just sitting around outside and enjoying the sounds of nature at the villa, so I think spring and autumn are perfect. In spring, the views are particularly beautiful with all of the blooming plants, while autumn brings amazing colours.
