Outpost - Casa das Arribas
Outpost is a historic property with 6 apartments in a unique location, perched atop cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean just a 40 minutes’ drive from Lisbon.
Outpost is located atop a cliff that directly overlooks the sea. You have a front-row seat for everything nature offers.
How would you describe Outpost in a nutshell?
Perched at the highest point of the whitewashed fishermen's village of Azenhas do Mar, the four Ocean Casitas feature expansive private terraces that extend to the cliff's edge. These quaint houses have been completely renovated, blending the charm of traditional Portuguese fishermen's homes with modern design elements, including open-space layouts, micro-cement floors, and ceilings that reach up to 5 meters high.
What was the inspiration/story behind Outpost?
It started as soon as I saw the property. From that moment, everything was very clear and moved quickly. I’d actually been looking for a place for myself and loved this area of coastline. But the house was far too big for just me. I realised there were no real boutique hotels in the area, so that’s how the idea developed to create holiday apartments.
How would you describe the atmosphere of Outpost, and what do you love about it?
I think the location of Outpost is central to its atmosphere, as it’s located atop a cliff that directly overlooks the sea. You have a front-row seat for everything nature offers - storms, wind and sunshine - so the changing weather is quite amazing. It never feels the same from one day to the next - the colour of the ocean is always changing, and the sunsets always look different.
The four Ocean Casitas were fully-rebuilt, combining the cosiness of the original Portuguese fishermen homes with contemporary design such as open-space layouts, micro-cement flooring and up to 5m high ceilings.
How long do you recommend guests stay?
I’ve had guests stay anywhere from one day to four weeks. The first guest that arrived after I opened had only booked in for one night, but the next morning asked if they could stay for the rest of their vacation, which was two weeks. But I would recommend at least a couple of days, as that gives you time to experience the house and the changes in light and weather that make it so special.
The four Ocean Casitas sit at the highest point of the whitewashed fishermen's village of Azenhas do Mar, featuring large private terraces that extend to the cliff's edge. Each casita includes a sunlit terrace, comfortable beds, and a fully-equipped kitchen.
They also share a stunning 800-square-meter west-facing terrace that stretches to the vertical cliff. This terrace, transformed into a tropical garden, is shielded from the predominant north winds by the L-shaped layout of the buildings. Various seating areas along the cliff edge provide the perfect spots to enjoy a sunset while listening to the waves crashing against the rocks 60 meters below.
The smallest of the Ocean Casitas may boast the best view. The living area, complete with a kitchenette, dining table, and two lounge chairs, offers everything you need for two.
The terrace door opens to a private outdoor space just 5 meters from the vertical cliff. Enjoy the sea view from the table and access the expansive shared cliff terrace with an outdoor shower.

A restful sleep is essential for a relaxing stay. Our beds, mattresses, pillows, and bedding are from Coco-Mat, handcrafted in Northern Greece using naturally replenished raw materials such as cotton, seaweed, wool, and wood.
Though we enjoy pleasant weather most of the year, conditions can occasionally become harsh. All casitas are equipped with underfloor heating, and the two-bedroom units also include fireplaces. The ocean breeze and thick stone walls ensure that air conditioning is unnecessary.
We offer a breakfast basket delivery service each morning, filled with a selection of fresh local products (such as fresh orange juice, tea, coffee, bread, eggs, ham, cheese, jam, fruits, butter, etc.) for you to prepare your own breakfast. Please select this option when booking your apartment, priced between EUR 20 and EUR 25 per person, depending on your choices.
For your stay, we provide organic shower gel, shampoo, and soap. Our personal care products are crafted from various cold-pressed nut oils by local cosmetics artisans at Oliofora.
I definitely recommend doing a hike along the coast, which is really spectacular and can be as short or as long as you like. We also have great surfing in the area, particularly during the summer months when it’s not too stormy. Sintra is nearby if you want to explore its castles and gardens, and you can easily visit Lisbon on a day trip too. I’d also highly recommend a visit to the nearby farmers’ market if you’re visiting on the weekend, as you can pick up very good, fresh produce there.
Outpost is nestled along a pristine stretch of coastline, dotted with fishing villages, just north of Lisbon. Although close to the capital, this area feels secluded and tranquil, with a few villas serving as summer retreats for affluent Lisbon residents.
Situated at the pinnacle of the whitewashed fishermen's village of Azenhas do Mar, the four Ocean Casitas boast spacious private terraces that extend to the cliff's edge. At the end of winding streets, paths, and stairs through the tiny village, an unexpected gate leads to the OUTPOST - Ocean Casitas property, featuring a broad ocean terrace and four houses.
Azenhas do Mar, a whitewashed village clinging to the cliffs and cascading down to the sea, has a resemblance to Greece. Despite its peaceful ambiance, it offers some excellent seafood restaurants. Nearby, Praia Grande, a large beach with amenities, and a smaller, often deserted beach right in front of the property, provide perfect seaside escapes even during peak summer.
In my opinion, autumn (particularly October) is the best time to visit as you get the least wind and the most sun. But I also like the winter time as you can get some beautiful sunny days and incredible stormy weather and can enjoy the fireplaces, which are located in four of the apartments.
