An introduction to Castel Maurn

How would you describe Castel Maurn in a nutshell?

Castel Maurn is a unique building that is over 1,000 years old. In 2020, it was completely restored and technically updated, creating a magical place where guests can find tranquility and recharge their batteries. Castel Maurn has been family-owned since 1935 and is now run by me and my wonderful wife.

What is the story behind Castel Maurn, what was your inspiration to create it?

Castel Maurn has served many purposes throughout its history. In addition to being a court and a customs station, it was once a hunting lodge. Within the last century, it was occupied by a German tailor, which employed many people from the area. For the last 40 years, my mother ran a youth hostel from the property.

When I inherited Castel Maurn, I wanted to restore it to its former splendour and I think I have succeeded in doing that. It has become a special place where people feel very comfortable.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Castel Maurn?

Historic charm meets modern details. The beautiful paintings and old wooden floors have been carefully restored with great respect for their history. That being said, guests don’t have to go without any modern amenities. I think it’s a special feeling staying in Castel Maurn’s spacious rooms where noble counts once lived.

To you personally, what is so special about Castel Maurn?

Surrounded by forests and mountains, Castel Maurn is a place to enjoy the tranquility and recharge your batteries. It is a house with a soul where every detail has been carefully considered. I grew up in this house and think is a place of power, particularly in relation to the environment and nature.

Castel Maurn rooms & rates

On the ground floor is a small reception, an honesty bar and a lounge with historic murals, as well as two of the guest suites and a small kitchen. It’s here that breakfast is prepared each morning and brought to the suites. During the rest of the day, you can enjoy the atmosphere of the lounge with an aperitif. 

On the first floor, there is a large lounge (also with historic paintings) and three suites. The second floor has another two suites and a double room with a bath and shower. On the third floor is the final suite, a beautiful loft. All of the suites are between 35 and 80 square metres. 

Occupying the basement’s historic vaults are a steam sauna, a Finnish sauna and a steam bath, as well as a plunge pool with refreshing water and a cosy relaxation room. In the spa, you can always find fantastic teas, fresh mountain water, South Tyrolean apples and other wonderful things to nibble on. 

In the 900-square-metre fenced garden is a heated outdoor pool and a beautiful terrace. In addition, we provide our guests with a fully equipped modern gym. Cars can be parked in the garage and there is a charging station for electric vehicles. Also near the garage is a ski-bike-golf depot.

Castel Maurn nestles in a quiet corner of the mountains and offers easy access to everything the Dolomites have to offer. This includes easy hikes, challenging mountain treks, bike tours and tandem flights, as well as snow experiences at the various ski areas. Nearby are the Trois Pics, Lac de Braies and the Fanes Sennes Braies nature reserve, as well as golf courses and cultural museums to explore. 

Whether you’re into rural inns or fine-dining cuisine, there are different culinary options to discover. In Brunico is the Michelin-star l‘Atelier Moessmer Norbert Niederkofler, which occupies a villa that was once part of the eponymous textile factory. Alpine Food & Space Restaurant has a “Cook the Mountain“ concept, using sustainability and regional flavours as their culinary guiding principles.

In San Lorenzo di Sebato is the “Lerchners” restaurant, which is typical of the Alto Adige region. It serves delicious regional cuisine prepared using the best local ingredients and is located alongside a farm where the beef on its menu is reared.

The location of Castel Maurn

Castel Maurn is located in San Lorenzo, which is just five minutes’ drive from the Kronplatz ski area and 30 minutes from Alta Badia at the beginning of the Dolomites’ Gadertal Valley. It is surrounded by lush, green meadows and just three minutes’ walk from the forest. It is the ideal starting point for mountain excursions in both summer and winter. 

When is the best time to visit South Tyrol?

Summer is a very popular time to visit and we have a long winter season to enjoy the great ski slopes nearby. In my opinion, there are nice experiences to be had in San Lorenzo at all times of the year.
