An introduction to grätzlhotel

How would you describe grätzlhotel in a nutshell?

grätzlhotel suites are former retail shops that were refurbished into ‘suites’ to create a small luxury hotel. All loft rentals are located within the same neighbourhood in the fourth district of Vienna, Austria. The services we offer are all provided by places close-by, such as a café around the corner, which serves as the breakfast room. Our network also offers a spa and several restaurants in the area.

We did all of the hotel lofts’ interior design. Based on what historical surfaces we found, such as walls, ceilings, and floors we then added furniture that is customised to fit the style of grätzlhotel. So while the furniture is typical grätzl style, you can still see the traces of what the rooms were originally used for.

What was your inspiration for such a unique hotel concept?

During our architectural studies we started thinking about how to reuse urban spaces in European cities such as Vienna. With the current trend of moving from the cities into the suburbs, many buildings were abandoned and the shops on the ground levels became vacant. Using these empty shops as hotel rooms was an entirely new concept which we decided to try out. In 2008/09 we then received support from the local government to help develop our first prototype, a room in a former tailor shop.

What is so special about the experience of renting one of the lofts?

The best way to experience a city is to live and spend time with the people living there. Our breakfast room is a typical Viennese café room, and therefore offers a much more local atmosphere than any breakfast room of a 4-star hotel. Our guests will feel less like tourists and more like they are staying with friends and getting a taste of their personal recommendations.

While these services enable our guests to feel much more at home, at the same time we are a professional hotel organisation that provides you with whatever you may need. grätzlhotel offers the perfect base to go out and explore the city with some special recommendations by us.

grätzlhotel rooms & rates

The suites are all named according to the former use of the shop — the tailoress, the blacksmith, the gallerist, the artist, and the tobacconist. The tailoress is very cozy and our smallest room with 25 sqm. The biggest room is the lampshade maker with 48 sqm and which also has a very beautiful bathroom. As the tailoress was our prototype, it will always be our baby.

We have a network of shops, restaurants, etc., which we recommend to our guests. As we also frequent these places ourselves, we have gotten to know the owners really well and often go there for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drinks. We provide our guests with a map of all of them. These are all additional services that our guests did not pay us for but instead do so directly at the shops, cafés, etc. Our guests can always expect a very special experience with grätzlhotel and our network of friends in different parts of our neighbourhood.

Things to do in Vienna

  • Art / Culture
  • Shopping / Markets
  • Night life
  • Massages / Treatments
  • Yoga classes
  • Hiking

I would definitely recommend the former bread factory Ankerbrotfabrik, which is now a gallery for photography and contemporary art. The gallery is located in a beautiful historic building in a nice area. There are several other great galleries close by as well.

A nice area to explore is Margaretenstrasse in Vienna’s fifth district, which has a lot of small handcraft boutique shops. It is a hot spot with a lot of locals and only a few other tourists. Walking there from the lofts will take only 10 or 12 mins.

I would also recommend the Freihausviertel at night and the new University of Economics for anyone interested in architecture.

The location of grätzlhotel

The fourth district or ‘4. Bezirk’ is a wealthy area with many embassies that is very close to the inner city of Vienna. While it is easy to walk or bike everywhere there is also the new Vienna central station, which will open in the fall of 2015. grätzlhotel is a very good start from where you can explore the places we recommend that aren’t listed in any regular city guide.

I prefer this area to all the other areas in Vienna because the university is really close by and there are lots of galleries. It is also a very quiet area and cosy place to come home to after a full day of exploring the city. All of Vienna can easily be explored by bicycle or on foot. Even if our holiday guests want to go swimming in the river Danube during the summer months, like most Viennese, they can get there very easily.

When is the best time to visit Vienna?

In Vienna, each season has a special charm to it. For anyone interested in cultural events, I would recommend visiting in January or February when there are no queues in front of the locations. During the spring months of May or June, the city comes back to life. It is a very nice atmosphere as everyone will be sitting outside drinking coffee.

During the summer months only very few Viennese stay here so there are plenty of parking spaces available. During the fall the city is pretty full as there are many events such as conferences, music and design festivals and much more. Christmas fans will enjoy November and December. Starting November 15th everything is decorated very festively. New Year’s Eve also has a lot to offer with many parties, dancing on the streets and outdoor ice-skating.
