Black Rock House
Inspired by the mountains and rocks, the house is an architecturally designed rental in the town of Weiler, Vorarlberg. All living spaces feature custom-designed furnishings and incredible views.
You feel as though you are alone up there while still being within walking distance of the lake.
House Above
House Above is an architecturally distinctive triangular house on the shores of Lake Traunsee in Gmunden, Austria, designed with exposed concrete and oak by its architect-minded owners. House Above features floor-to-ceiling windows framing panoramic views of the lake and the Höllgebirge mountain range, bringing the surrounding meadows and forests directly into the living space. House Above sits just minutes from the lake on foot, with hiking trails beginning directly from the doorstep and the cultural town of Gmunden a short walk or drive away.
The town and closest restaurant are roughly 15 minutes away on foot. In summer, the lake is within easy walking distance, but a car makes it easier to explore the wider region.
What was your inspiration to create the house? What is the story behind it?
My husband and I were both born and raised in Gmunden, though we now live in Vienna. We’ve always loved the lake, the mountains, and being outdoors, and with much of our family still in the area, it remains a special place for us.
During the pandemic, we spent as much time as possible in the region, and that’s when the idea of building our own house took shape. It had long been a dream of my husband’s, ever since he studied architecture in Vienna in Zaha Hadid’s class at the University of Applied Arts. Although he doesn’t work as an architect, we wanted to create something that fully reflected our vision. With support from a close friend who teaches architecture, we brought the idea to life.
We envisioned the house as a vibrant and welcoming place — somewhere to feel at home, unwind, and enjoy quality time with friends and family. As a family based in Vienna, we cherish every moment we spend at the house. When we’re not there ourselves, we love sharing this special place with others and opening it up to those looking for peace, beauty, and connection.
How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design?
Whenever I arrive at the house from the city, I can feel my nervous system begin to relax immediately. The large windows in the living area bring the outside in — you’re surrounded by nature, even while indoors. Meadows and forest encircle the house, making it easy to slow down and breathe.
We wanted a modern design, which you can see in the use of exposed concrete and wood. But the plot came with some challenges — part of the land couldn’t be built on due to safety regulations. That’s how the house ended up with its unusual triangular shape. In the end, it turned into a defining feature — and we’re really happy with the result.
The kitchen and entrance furnishings are made of oak, crafted by a local carpenter who’s also a longtime friend. He spent many years working at a renowned concert hall in Vienna, and we love the elegant, thoughtful design he created for us.
To you personally, what's so special about the house?
Our house is the last one at the end of the road, with just a single neighbour, though you’d hardly notice. The house is oriented toward the lake, the forest, and the mountains, so it feels wonderfully secluded, yet the town is still within walking distance.
In summer, the cows are your closest neighbours. There’s no need for a TV — there’s always something to watch outside. What makes this place truly special is how close it is to nature: the lake is just minutes away, and there are wonderful hiking trails starting right from the doorstep. No need to get in the car.
You enter the house through the carport. If it’s raining, you can park the car and enter the house without getting wet. After you enter, the first view you have is toward the lake and the surrounding mountains.
There’s a feeling that the house sucks you in, as the entrance ceiling is at a normal height and, as you approach the living room, the ceiling increases in height. It creates a sense of space. Together with the furnishings and the exposed concrete and wood, it feels very modern.
On the entrance floor, there’s an open-plan kitchen and living room with a staircase that leads up to the first floor. The kitchen is made from oak and is simply designed, with an integrated bar where you can sit and chat while others are cooking. In front of the window is a small bench where you can read a book or have a coffee while enjoying the view.
On the same level is one of the bedrooms, which has a wooden floor, a piano and an ensuite bathroom. This bedroom is reached by descending a few stairs, so the space feels really cosy. A big balcony connects the entire front of the house and extends into a spacious dining terrace.
On the first floor is another terrace and a small space with a washing machine and an ironing board. Downstairs is the basement where you’ll find two more bedrooms, as well as a terrace from which you can reach the garden. There’s also a bathroom with a shower and a separate toilet. All of the bedrooms are quite spacious.
OVERVIEW
The property is surrounded by lush meadows dotted with blackberry bushes overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Traunsee and the majestic mountain panorama of the Höllengebirge range. Large glass elements create a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors, bringing nature right into the living room.
On request, we can offer breakfast and additional cleaning services during the stay. It’s possible to rent bicycles, kayaks, standup paddle-boards and sailing boats nearby.
FACILITIES
The house is located in an area where you can do a lot of outdoor sports, from hiking and climbing to road cycling and mountain biking. We also have a bouldering facility in the city, as well as tennis courts, a scooter park and golf courses nearby.
All kinds of water sports are possible on the lake, including water skiing and banana boating for kids. The other side of the lake is particularly well known as a kite surfing, windsurfing and foiling destination.
In Gmunden, there is a beautiful old theatre, a cinema and outdoor concerts are held during the warmer months. In fact, the town hosts a nice cultural program, often highlighting the work of the Austrian writer, Thomas Bernhard, who lived nearby.
The area is also famous for its ceramics — Gmundner Keramik is still producing pottery today. You can do guided tours or hands-on workshops, and pick your creations up later or have them sent home. There’s also a big ceramics market each year, and we have ceramics stores in the city selling pottery from different artists.
I’d recommend taking a walk along the lake at the local park ("Toscana Park"), which is usually dotted with art sculptures in the summertime. Right behind the lake, there are some very high mountains offering wonderful views that can be reached along several hiking trails. I’d also suggest attending a concert at the Stadttheater Gmunden during your stay.
The house is located in the Austrian town of Gmunden at the northern end of the Traunsee. By car, the lake is one minute away, and on foot, you can reach it in 10 to 15 minutes. There’s a big parking area down at the lake - it’s never an issue finding a park. The town is around two minutes by car, and there are lots of restaurants, with the closest one around 15 minutes walking distance.
I would say spring is the most charming season, as everything is turning green and exploding. It’s still a bit calmer than in the high season, and there are already so many opportunities for outdoor activities. In summer, it’s warm enough to swim in the lake, but it’s more crowded.
Autumn is the best time of the year for me because you have all the beautiful colours of the trees. It has a certain magic. You can still swim until around September or October, and this is a quieter time to visit.
