Sonnenhof
A unique ski-in ski-out property in Lech’s best location with more than 600 years of history in one of the world's top 5 ski resorts.
Guests of Sonnenhof will also enjoy privileged access to facilities of the ***** Hotel Almhof Schneider including a cinema, childcare, spa and gym.
What is the story behind the Sonnenhof? What inspired you to create it?
My family has resided in Lech since the late-14th century, farming the surrounding lands for over 550 years. Compared to this history our journey in hospitality is relatively young. We have been welcoming guests to our hotel, the Almhof Schneider, for just under a century.
Sonnenhof exemplifies and harmonises our old and new heritages. Founded in 1393, around the same time as our original farm house was built, it evolved in many stages. In its current state Sonnenhof conserves this century-old history and reminds us of our origins . Whilst the Almhof has evolved and established itself as Austria's first *****Superior hotel, Sonnenhof’s allure lies in its deep state of preservation. Its vernacular architecture defines the region’s farming history. To walk into a 600-year-old structure which feels at once so human and so comfortable, is an extraordinary testament to the past. Sonnenhof is one of the few surviving houses from Lech’s original settlement in the late 14th century. It was clear therefore that we had to preserve this rare cultural heritage and refurbish it with the utmost sensitivity. Now guests can enjoy Sonnenhof’s palpable history with all of today’s comforts. To achieve this we have tried to keep as much as possible of the original structure. We have applied old building techniques, worked with the best local craftsmanship and used exclusively natural materials.
Sonnenhof is the essence of an Alpine home. Its design naturally fosters togetherness. The spacious living room and large dining table encourage a spirit of community. At the same time, Sonnenhof feels deeply private and intimate. It is made for those who wish to gather with loved ones, to create memories, and to feel connected to a space that is grounded both in the past and present.
Sonnenhof also sits in Lech's most beautiful location, right next to the Hinterwies lift and overlooking the village. It is the first house to be bathed in sunlight each morning and is characterised by quietude and calm.
How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design of the chalet?
Homely and timeless. We approached the refurbishment with the utmost respect for its history. Every modern addition was crafted using traditional techniques. It’s remarkable that there are still artisans today who have preserved these skills for centuries! Their authentic approach aligned perfectly with our own.
The original materials can be seen and felt in every nook of Sonnenhof, yet this doesn’t come at the expense of comfort. The chalet doesn’t “pretend” to have history—it genuinely does. Sonnenhof offers a level of craftsmanship that is rare to find anywhere in the world. It feels both deeply historical and uniquely comfortable.
Everyone who visits the chalet feels drawn to its atmosphere and doesn’t want to leave. When my family and I stayed there for the first time, we ended up extending our visit; it was too hard to go home.
What makes the chalet so special to you personally?
How many homes have a 600-year history and still feel timeless, comfortable and inviting? The charm of the past can’t be emulated and Sonnenhof offers no pretences. Its preserved authenticity is its most important feature.
The fusion of historical significance and genuine comfort makes it extraordinary. The chalet tells a story that is evoked through all the senses; the feel of the old wood, the view of the mountains each morning, the sound of the crackling fireplace… every moment is truly unforgettable.
The chalet consists of a living room, dining room and a kitchen on the ground floor and three bedrooms on each of the two upper floors.
One master bedroom on each floor has its own bathroom and walk-in closet, while the other two rooms share a spacious, light-filled bathroom with a magnificent view of the mountains. One of the two smaller rooms on the upper floor has a bunk bed, which can sleep 4 children if required.
The hallway on the second floor has an open fireplace designed by Giuseppe Ducrot and a desk in front of a large window with a view over Lech.
Shinichiro Ogata, who has already worked on the design of the garage in the Almhof, has created a fascinating, sculptural sauna for the antique cellar under the living room.
A second cellar, which has also been preserved in its original state, serves as a pantry and wine cellar.
The Sonnenhof also has an underground parking garage with 4 spaces.

The chalet is nestled along Lech’s south-facing principal slope and right next to the Hinterwies ski lift. Its privileged location offers uninterrupted views of the mountain, with nothing but nature stretching before it. 50 meters away lies the Hinterwies ski-lift ensuring true ski-in, ski-out ease. The lift itself passes so close to the window that you simply can’t get nearer to the action.
True to its name (Sonnenhof means “sun inn” in German), the chalet is the first house in the village to be bathed in morning light. Before dusk, the rooms glow with the last golden rays of the setting sun. Perched slightly above the village, it enjoys a serene and exclusive position but is a mere five-minute walk to the centre. From the comfort of Sonnenhof’s encompassing terrace, you can peer over the rooftops onto the village below, enjoying a sense of both privacy and connection. For me, it’s the best location in town, offering unparalleled views, sunlight, and proximity to the slopes.
Although Lech is famous for its skiing the summer and early autumn is almost more stunning and the village isn't so busy. The chalet is great off-season. It feels cosy and has amazing views across the meadows and mountains.
