An introduction to Masseria dei Noci

How would you describe Masseria dei Noci in a nutshell?

Masseria dei Noci is a traditional country house that's surrounded by centuries-old oak and olive trees in Puglia’s Itria Valley. It’s a place where the intense colours of the Mediterranean scrub blend with the ancient smells of wild plants and you can enjoy slow living amidst the silence of nature.

What’s the story behind Masseria dei Noci and what was your inspiration to open it?

Masseria dei Noci is a historic farm that centres around several trulli — typical buildings of the Itria Valley. It was once inhabited by farmers who worked the fields and raised their animals here. When we discovered the farm, we fell in love with it immediately because it is such a quiet place and perfectly positioned on a south-facing hill.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Masseria dei Noci?

The calm and relaxed atmosphere of the outdoors flows into the interior spaces of the property, which have been designed with a tasteful aesthetic. There’s a certain nostalgia about the place and a sense that time has stopped.

To you personally, what is so special about Masseria dei Noci?

Masseria dei Noci is a place where you can experience slow living, where everything stops and you can listen to yourself and the surrounding nature. It’s a place to enjoy good food and good wine, with our aim being to welcome our guests as we would like to be welcomed.

Masseria dei Noci rooms & rates

Masseria dei Noci has four individual structures, each of which is different from the next. They are all surrounded by a large, private garden, which is an oasis of peace and tranquility and a place where you can enjoy the surrounding nature and Apulian traditions. For the exclusive use of guests is a swimming pool, which offers a moment of relaxation and refreshment on hot summer days.

Dimora Degli Ulivi is spread across two levels, with the living area on the ground floor and a sleeping area on the mezzanine. It’s ideal for two people and offers splendid views of the surrounding olive trees. It features a living room with a gas stove and a wood-burning fireplace, as well as a sauna that can be enjoyed in the colder months. It feels very tranquil and private, with the only sounds being the chirping of birds and the footsteps of small animals amidst the foliage.

Dimora delle Erbe (“Home of Herbs”) occupies a small hut built from Apulian stone and was where the tools were once stored. It features a large living room with a fireplace and a well-equipped kitchen, as well as a double bedroom and a bathroom with a shower. The outdoor patio offers a cool respite on hot summer days beneath the shade of holm oaks and overlooks a herb-filled garden. It’s ideal for couples or families and enjoys views of the main house.

With splendid views of the woods, the Trullo of the Aia overlooks a place where wheat was once beaten and is positioned adjacent to the main residence. It comprises two main parts — two trulli and an old lamia — both typical buildings of the Apulian tradition. This three-room apartment features a small lounge area with a fireplace and a glass-topped coffee table, as well as a double bedroom and outdoor seating beneath the shade of an ancient walnut tree.

Once the stables of the Dimora, the House of Ravel is a 40-square-metre studio apartment that is set across one level and can accommodate two people. It features a kitchenette, a private bathroom with a shower and a wonderful sleeping area with a double bed. The history of the building is always evident, with stone mangers still present, and it’s surrounded by oak woodlands and the smells of aromatic plants.

Guests can walk along the historic sheep tracks that lead into the surrounding woodlands or take advantage of the bicycles we have available. In addition to yoga classes, there is also a horse-riding school nearby and we’re just 30 minutes’ drive from several beautiful beaches.

I’d recommend visiting the Grotte di Castellana, which is one of the biggest caves in Italy and is just 15 kilometres from Masseria dei Noci. The Trulli of Alberobello are also a “must”, as is exploring the white villages of the Itria Valley, such as Cisternino, Locorotondo and Martina Franca.

The location of Masseria dei Noci

Masseria dei Noci is located in the middle of the Itria Valley and just five minutes’ drive from the town of Noci with some excellent restaurants. The Adriatic Sea is 25 kilometres away while Bari and its airport are just under an hour’s drive. It’s within easy access to all the main centres of historical and cultural interest in Puglia, including the beautiful basilica of San Nicola in Bari and the Baroque architecture of Lecce (1.5 hours away).

The UNESCO World Heritage-listed trulli of Alberobello are just 15 minutes from the property and the ancient cave dwellings of the Sassi di Matera (another UNESCO site) are an hour away. Also an hour away is the mysterious Castel del Monte, which is associated with the story of Frederick II.

When is the best time to visit Puglia?

From April to October, the weather is great to enjoy the sun and the sea on the nearby beaches.
