A farmhouse turned luxury vacation rental, Masseria Petrarolo in Puglia combines rustic warmth with elegance. Nine bedrooms in the villa and pool house are set in olive and citrus groves.
Masseria Di Gregorio is my place of the heart. Now it is also work, but the spirit of hospitality is always the same!
Masseria Di Gregorio
The masseria is located in a strategic position to visit the most interesting places in Puglia and Basilicata.
All the services (supermarkets, drugstores, restaurants) are only a very short drive from the property.
How would you describe Masseria Di Gregorio in a nutshell?
Masseria Di Gregorio is the place where I spent my summers as a child. It has always embraced guests. It is a special place, it seems suspended between space and time. A perfect refuge to relax surrounded by history and nature.
What’s your background and what was your inspiration to open Masseria Di Gregorio?
My background is in culture and tourism. For 15 years I was the owner of Falsopepe, a successful bistro and restaurant. I am also artistic director of the film festival Vicoli Corti. And for the past three years, I have started to manage the family farm where Masseria Di Gregorio is located.
The country house where we used to host friends and relatives every year is a real place of welcome and sharing. I decided to combine my various experiences in this new project in 2019 which obtained the recognition of Archilovers as the best project in 2019.
How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Masseria Di Gregorio?
Masseria Di Gregorio is a small “masseria”, a typical Apulian farm, built in the early 1900s on the edge of a ravine. The historic building, planned as an accommodation facility, combines design with hospitality and art while maintaining the simple atmosphere of country life. A context reigned by the peace of nature. In this perspective the interior design aims to give a comfortable and sober atmosphere, combining the ancient and the modern with refined vintage furniture, contemporary design elements and original objects in which we have involved local artisans.
To you personally, what is so special about Masseria Di Gregorio?
Masseria Di Gregorio is my place of the heart. Now it is also work, but the spirit of hospitality is always the same!
Please tell us about the food.
Masseria Di Gregorio’s kitchen is equipped with all the main kitchen tools. The nearest supermarket is 1 km away, it is well-stocked and also has a good choice of wines. Other shops, bars and restaurants are highlighted in the guide that we send to our guests before arrival.
Is Masseria Di Gregorio best suited for couples, families, groups? What’s your policy on kids?
Masseria Di Gregorio is perfect for families or groups of friends. It is equipped with a cot and a high chair. Bicycles, hammocks and swings for children and adults are all available in the garden.
Guests have the whole house at their disposal. The first floor consists of 2 double bedrooms, 1 single bedroom, a living room with a sofa bed, a fully equipped kitchen, 2 bathrooms and 2 terraces. The old stable on the ground floor is an open space perfect as a lounge and as a place for cooking classes or dinners and on-request lunches.
The garden offers many spaces for relaxation. Guests can also freely access the orchard and vegetable garden to collect fruit and vegetables.
The small swimming pool is perfect for cooling off during the hot Apulian summer listening to the song of cicadas. The barbecue area and the wood oven offer pleasant moments for dinner in the garden.
We offer Apulian cooking classes with the former chef of Falsopepe, Anna Maria. She will teach you how to make fresh pasta, focaccia and panzerotti. It is a fun and very tasty experience.
It is also possible to book massages and yoga lessons. And for those who want to keep fit, there is a pedestrian circuit that runs around the entire property through Mediterranean nature.
Cooking classes, massages and yoga classes are available on request. You can attend wine tastings in beautiful wineries or go on a boat trip to watch dolphins.
Highlights in the area are the Valle d'Itria, which is 30 minutes away by car. The incredible beaches of the Ionian Sea are between 30 and 60 minutes away and Matera with its caves and its incredible setting is only 45 minutes away.
Masseria Di Gregorio is located near the town but at the same time, it is as if it were isolated. The only sounds that can be heard are those of nature with an incredible panorama that opens onto the Gulf of Taranto.
The nearest town is Massafra, which is located in a strategic position that allows you to quickly reach the most beautiful destinations in Puglia and Basilicata. The nearest beach is 20 minutes away by car but in one hour you can visit the most beautiful beaches of Puglia which are indicated in the guide that we send to our guests.
Masseria Di Gregorio is located inside the Terra delle Gravine natural park, with large canyons where people live in cave houses and nature trails. It is surrounded by 20 hectares of cultivated fields, woods and wild nature with a splendid view of the Mediterranean sea on the horizon. It is possible to meet wild cats, foxes, hedgehogs, hares and small hawks.
Any time is good to visit Puglia. For those who love the sea, I recommend July and September, as the beaches are less crowded. For those who are interested in history and local traditions, the entire year is good. In August it is perfect for music lovers as there are many events and festivals.
