How would you describe Ording House in a nutshell?
Ording House is a spacious coastal retreat on the German North Sea, where traditional architecture is reinterpreted through a calm, contemporary lens. Large openings connect the interior with the surrounding landscape, creating a quiet dialogue between light, space, and nature.
What is the story behind Ording House, what was your inspiration to create it?
Ording House grew out of our family’s long-standing connection to the North Sea. We have always been drawn to the vastness of the dunes, the open skies, and the quiet atmosphere around St. Peter-Ording.
The house became a shared family project, with everyone contributing their strengths — from organisation and pragmatism to design ideas — and discussing every detail together. The result reflects both this collective process and the landscape itself, combining a traditional thatched roof with contemporary elements such as Corten steel.
How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Ording House?
The interior is defined by light, openness, and a sense of calm restraint. A minimalist approach, natural materials, and soft, muted tones create a timeless and grounded atmosphere.
Large windows frame the surrounding landscape, while carefully selected furniture and textures add warmth without disturbing the overall simplicity.
To you personally, what is so special about Ording House?
What feels most special is its strong sense of place. The house sits quietly within the open North Sea landscape, surrounded by meadows and wide skies, far from noise and crowds.
At the same time, the beach is within walking distance, and St. Peter-Ording — with its cafés, restaurants, and shops — remains close by. This balance between seclusion and connection feels quite rare.
The architecture and interiors were designed to mirror this atmosphere — calm, open, and understated.
Ording House consists of two separate units — East and West — which can be booked individually or together.
Each accommodates up to six guests and features three bedrooms, an open-plan living and dining area, and a private terrace facing the surrounding meadows. While both units share the same architectural language, they differ subtly in materials and detailing.
A small outdoor sauna, set slightly apart from the house, is shared between both units and blends quietly into the landscape.

The beach of St. Peter-Ording — one of the largest sand beaches in Europe — is within walking distance and is my personal favourite. Its sheer scale and open horizon make it feel almost endless.
The area offers a wide range of activities, from surfing, kitesurfing, sailing, and stand-up paddling to long walks along the shoreline. The surrounding landscape is also ideal for cycling and hiking through dunes and meadows.
Our three highlights in the area are:
First, the vast beach of St. Peter-Ording and the nearby Wadden Sea National Park, where guided mudflat walks reveal the unique tidal landscape.
Second, the historic town of Friedrichstadt, with its canals and distinctive architecture.
And third, Hamburg — about 90 minutes away — offering a rich mix of culture, architecture, and urban life.
Ording House is located in the open coastal landscape near St. Peter-Ording on the German North Sea. The area is characterised by wide meadows, dunes, and the nearby Wadden Sea National Park, a unique tidal landscape and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Along the coast, expansive beaches stretch into the horizon, while nearby towns such as Husum, Tönning, and Friedrichstadt — with its canals and almost Dutch character — offer a quieter cultural counterpoint. Hamburg, with its museums, theatres, and architecture, can be reached in around 90 minutes.
What makes this place particularly special is its sense of vastness — a landscape reduced to its essentials: sky, wind, and open space — combined with a subtle but rich cultural layer.
Each season has its own character. Summer brings long days and beach life on the expansive sands of St. Peter-Ording.
In spring, the meadows turn green and fill with newborn lambs. Autumn is shaped by shifting coastal weather, dramatic skies, and soft, golden light.
Winter, with its storms and stillness, offers a quieter, more introspective experience — when the landscape feels at its most vast and elemental.
