Gut Üselitz
Gut Üselitz is a landmark protected Renaissance manor situated in the south of the island of Rügen. The manor houses seven holiday apartments and is surrounded by water on all sides.
Despite being in a small town, you feel as though you are in your own universe because it’s so calm.
What is the story behind St. Oak, what was your inspiration to create it?
We have travelled a lot over the last few years, particularly in Scandinavia, and we always enjoyed staying in holiday apartments much more than hotels. We like to have our own kitchen and cook with local ingredients. So we wanted to create something like this by ourselves and host guests in our own space.
We live in the countryside near Berlin in the historic town of Kyritz, which isn’t yet touristy. It’s really calm and beautiful and you can always find a quiet spot at the nearby lake. We decided to create something so other people can discover this area.
It was a family project with my dad — we always had this dream to have a holiday rental together! I’m a photographer and Nora is a stylist and we mostly photograph food. Cooking is a huge part of our lives and one of our main ideas was to have a kitchen where nothing was missing.
We found this very nice building opposite Kyritz’s town hall (which is like something out of a fairytale) with an amazing oak tree out the front. When you enter the building and look out the windows toward the tree, it feels special. I think the way the tree interacts with the house, almost flowing into the house, is what made us fall in love with the building.
At the moment, we have one apartment designed for four guests, which we opened in May 2024. But later this year, we will also have a three-bedroom apartment available to rent. We are also working on renovating the backyard, which will eventually have an outdoor kitchen and an alfresco dining area, plus a small greenhouse where you can sit inside and have breakfast.
How would you describe the atmosphere of St. Oak?
It has a really calming atmosphere, mainly due to the huge oak tree in front of the house — you can see it through all of the apartment’s south-facing windows. It has a powerful presence. Because the loft is 160 square metres and the colours are quite neutral, it feels very bright and spacious.
While we worked with craftspeople during the renovations (to remove walls and flooring), the interior design we did ourselves. During our travels, we connected with several Scandinavian brands and there are a lot of natural materials, such as linen, wood and stone, throughout the apartment. That’s what we like.
To you personally, what makes St. Oak so special?
The open floor plan — you can see everything and it feels almost nest-like. While you have all this space, it still feels cosy and there’s lots of natural light. Despite being in a town, you feel as though you are in your own universe because it’s so calm.
The loft is on the first floor of the building and you enter into an open hallway, from where you can see the whole apartment. There is space in the entranceway for shoes, jackets and suitcases.
On the left-hand side is a huge bookshelf and a living area with a large sofa and chairs, from where you can enjoy views out toward the balcony and the oak tree. Beneath one of the windows is a cosy reading nook and tucked behind the lounge is one of the beds.
On the right-hand side is the kitchen, which really is the heart of the apartment and has an island bench so you can interact with people while you cook. There’s also a dining table with views of the oak tree and a pantry wall with a fridge/freezer and a washing machine.
Next to the pantry is a bathroom with a double sink and a shower, and adjacent to this is a separate bedroom with its own powder room (toilet and sink) and a freestanding bath. It’s around 26 square metres and has a wonderful view of the oak tree. We also added a nice shelving system, plus a home office spot.
We are always reachable by phone and close by if guests need anything and we have four bikes available for guests to use. The final cleaning is included and additional cleaning can be arranged for a surcharge.
Children are welcome but we don’t provide any specific children’s facilities. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome and we can provide a dog basket and bowls on request.

Kyritz is a charming town with lots of old buildings and definitely worth exploring. Then just 10 minutes away by bicycle is a beautiful lake where you can go walking or swimming. There’s also a ferry that connects to an island with a great restaurant where you can eat burgers, salads and ice cream, although this is only open in the summertime. Also at the lake is a nice Italian restaurant that does good pizza — it’s around 15 minutes away by car.
In the area are several forests where you can go walking or enjoy a picnic in nature. It’s worth keeping in mind that this is not Berlin and it’s not a high-activity area. It’s a place to enjoy nature, relax beside the lake and recharge.
St. Oak is located on the town square of Kyritz, partway between Berlin and Hamburg. From Berlin, it’s 90 minutes by train and we are five minutes on foot from the railway station. By car, it’s a 1.5-hour drive from Berlin maximum. So for guests who want to experience Berlin and then enjoy a calmer side of Brandenburg, it’s perfect.
From the apartment, you can walk to the supermarket or the organic store, as well as reach two different ice cream shops. On the other side of the street is a very modern dog shop, which is owned by a woman who also offers dog walking on the weekends.
The town is quite small but it has all the amenities you need and it’s just 10 minutes by bike from the lake. It’s the perfect mix — you can access everything you need on foot and escape to the countryside so easily.
Just 20 metres from St. Oak is the tourist information office, which has lots of guides for cycling and walking in the area. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable about local events, as well as places to find local produce such as honey and beer.
Summer is always great because of the powerful light and you can go swimming in the lake. For outdoor activities, I’d recommend any time from April to September.
Because we are located in a town, it’s still wonderful in the wintertime, particularly if you want to escape the city but still have all the comforts. There are lots of walking trails to explore and at Christmas, there is a market in the town square that’s not as touristy as those in Berlin.
