An introduction to Tre Bacili

What is the story behind Tre Bacili, what was your inspiration to create it?

I live in Milan but come from an aristocratic family, Bacile di Castiglione, that was once of high value in the village of Spongano. So I wanted to do something that would give me satisfaction and create employment in the area. My parents didn’t own anything in the village, so I decided to buy three houses, built in the late 18th and 19th century, and transform them into a boutique property.

I wanted to create something completely different from other properties in the area, most of which feature a typical Salento style. But as managing hotels is not my background, I didn’t have the skills or knowledge. So I hired a consultant who runs several properties and has managed important hotels in the past.

I wanted to restore the houses’ architectural details and add in all of the comforts and technology that we could, such as underfloor heating and security cameras. We designed the mansion with environmental sustainability in mind, so there are no single-use plastics (guests receive a refillable steel water bottle when they arrive) and we collaborate with a toiletries company that uses local olive oil.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Tre Bacili?

Everything speaks of an old mansion. Many people say that it’s far from home but it feels like home. The property surrounds the oldest church in the village and is very private. You can stay within Tre Bacili all day and enjoy complete quiet. While we offer some hotel services, we are not a hotel and most guests say that it feels like they are staying in a family house.

Most of the rooms feature high ceilings and are very simple in their design, with not a lot of things on the walls or the tables. That being said, we do have artwork in all of the rooms and in the common areas, as well as a mural about the seasons in Salento. I also commissioned the artist to paint the interior of the swimming pool black with Greek-inspired drawings and tiles. Adjacent to the swimming pool is a small garden with 3 lemon trees and 5 fragrant white wisteria.

You enter through a passage on the right-hand side of the church, with the pool, kitchen and breakfast area in the middle. On the left-hand side are two of the bedrooms, with three on the other. In front of the lemon tree garden, there is a room that has been designed for guests with limited mobility. It is exactly the same as the other rooms, in terms of its style and amenities, but it is wheelchair accessible. Throughout the property are several terraces overlooking the church and the neighbouring park.

Tre Bacili designed the mansion without ever losing sight of the impact on the environment!

Solar thermal panels are used for heating water, air conditioning is achieved by radiant floor systems, and indoor and outdoor lighting is with LED lamps only. Treated drinking water, regular or sparkling, is offered to guests in thermal steel water bottles. Refillable ceramic dispensers with locally produced cosmetics and slippers in vegetable fibers are available in each room. All of this is to reduce the use of plastic packaging and/or disposable products.

The standard rooms are located in the most recent part of the mansion and overlook the internal courtyard. They have been made with ancient materials and contemporary technology. 

The architectural and stylistic choices place it at the beginning of the 900s, with furniture using traditional fabrics and materials, a double bed with a triple hygienic sheet, handmade seamless floors, and soundproof glass doors.

Breakfast is included in the rates and our staff is available in the morning and again in the evening to help with recommendations and reservations. Tre Bacili can assist with bookings at the lido and nearby restaurants, as well as arrange private transfers, olive oil or wine tasting and guided bicycle excursions.

The swimming pool is 3x8 metres and has a reverse swimming mechanism, as well as deckchairs and sun beds where you can relax.

Tre Bacili also has a physiotherapist who offers massages (this needs to be booked in advance) and onsite parking is available.

Otranto is around 30 minutes away while both Lecce and Gallipoli are slightly further, so you can easily spend a week and do something different each day. The closest beach is at Castro, which is 7 kilometres away. Around the same distance is a lido with umbrellas and sun loungers that can be reserved online at our website.

Our seaside is mostly pebbly, with only a handful of sandy beaches, and there are some fantastic caves where you can bathe. I would recommend renting a boat in Castro and going north to Otranto or south to Santa Maria de Leuca.

The location of Tre Bacili

Tre Bacili is located in the village of Spongano, which is in the middle of the southern part of Salento. I chose to create a project here instead of on the coast not only because of my family ties to the village, but also because Spongano is inhabited for 12 months of the year. On the coastline, usually, there are people from July to September. In Spongano there’s a supermarket, a pharmacy, a doctor, a gym — everything you need throughout the year.

Within 5 minutes’ drive, you’ll find 6 or 7 good restaurants or you can drive 40 minutes to Lecce and dine at Michelin-star restaurants.

When is the best time to visit Puglia?

Salento is wonderful to visit all year round, with the exception of the coldest months such as February and March. The weather is good from April to November and nature gives its best between May, July and in September. For those who love bicycles or motorbikes, the climate is ideal in April and October.
